Update: Fox News claims airing deceptive footage was just a ‘mistake’

Fox News’ Senior Vice President of News Michael Clemente told Mediate that the network simply made a “mistake” when it aired old footage of Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) being booed.

“We made a mistake with some of the video we aired, and plan on issuing a correction on America’s Newsroom tomorrow morning explaining exactly what happened,” he said.

Original report continues below…

Interviewing Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) on his victory in the CPAC 2011 presidential straw poll, the conservative Fox News Channel did something slimy: they cued up footage of the prior year.

While normally this could be passed off as a simple mistake — the same man presented poll results both years in front of the same backdrop and at the same podium — something of an editorial edict seems to have emerged.

The key difference between 2010 and 2011: In 2010, the room was full of former Mass. Governor Mitt Romney’s supporters, who booed the results. This year, the audience cheered and even began chanting Paul’s name (video archived below).

Paul said that in 2010, some of his supporters had trouble getting into the auditorium for the poll results, and one attendee wrote that it was because Paul’s Campaign for Liberty group had held a panel discussion that ran long, forcing his voters to watch from an overflow area.

Appearing on Fox News yesterday (video archived below), host Bill Hemmer asked Paul why people had booed him when the 2011 results were announced, playing the wrong clip as a basis for his question.

Paul, the 76-year-old libertarian Republican, passed it off same as he did the year prior, when the hosts of Fox and Friends asked him virtually the same questions (video archived below).

Instead of taking it personally or correcting the network on their video’s proper context, Paul stayed on message.

“I wasn’t there so I didn’t watch that little ceremony at the end,” he said. “But it shows you that people aren’t unanimous on this cause of liberty. I am very determined that liberty is the issue, but some people like being taken care of than demanding their freedoms.”

Paul added that his message was popular with conservatives because of the “younger crowd” that’s gravitated toward CPAC thanks to his presence.

“They are very attracted to the foreign policy of less intervention overseas,” he said.

Paul won the 2011 CPAC presidential poll with 30 percent of the vote, followed by Romney at 23 percent.

Jaw dropping evil. What does that say if Fox News is trying to destroy him already?! Sickening.

Fox hates the fact one of their candidates on their payroll didn’t win that poll.

    No if.

Thank you Rawstory for spreading this. This needs to be exposed because it shows how the NEOCONS HATE this man and are scared of his platform and forces will do anything to smear him in 2012. Fox needs to be called out on this blatant deception.

This on TOP of the fact that their poll they ran a few days ago for “top Republican” omitted Ron Paul completely from the poll. They want to rub Paul out of existence.

Bunch of lowlife bastards. Ron should NEVER go on their show again.

The republicans support a dumb bimbo like Palin if it means winning back power, but they can’t even support a respectable man like Ron Paul? What does that tell you about the people pulling the strings at Fox? This isn’t some massive conspiracy. I don’t even agree with everything RP says, but I would have a helluva a lot of respect for the man and be proud to call him my president. I guess that’s why I can’t have him, though.

I am truly disappointed at Fox’s blatant attempt to sway public opinion by misrepresenting the CPAC convention by using old footage. It is such a lowball slimy move, and I will make it a point to call their advertisers to make sure they are aware of the type of company they have chosen to do business with.

I like that comment but don’t agree – he should get as much media attention as he can – even from fox – his platform is sound and even if a presidential run fails – it will bring more awareness of serious issues before the American public.

No surprise here. Fox news is a POS…

  • Anonymous

Blatant deception has been deemed legal by various higher courts including the Supremes. For instance political ads without outright lies have been deemed free speech, it is legal. The Telecom Act of 1996 made it easier for the big corporations to get away with irresponsible use of the public airwaves. Basically the FCC is almost completely toothless and useless. But this goes beyond that a bit.

Since there is no regulation it is up to Paul to take on his own civil legal action for this obvious smear, not worth his time up against Murdoch and News Corp even thought they clearly smeared him.

I understand the sentiment – your outrage is understandible if you believe in fair and balanced reporting. Always remember FOX is nothing of the sort. I am NOT a Paul supporter by any stretch of the imagination but he deserves accurate reporting just like anyone else.

I’m tired of these f*ckers propogandizing the sheeple. Fox news is no better than MSNBC. Fair and balanced my ass. At least it’s a good sign that the power brokers are becoming so obvious in their manipulation of the facts.

Thank you “rawstory” for being the real media/watchdog that this country is supposed to have-God knows we won’t get it from Murdoch or GE owned mouthpieces.

Hahahaha…so, the “beacon of truth” for the right stings one of their own…I’m sure there will be plenty of outrage and righteous anger over this, too bad we don’t hear the same sort of outrage from most republicans as FUX news constantly lies about anyone WITHOUT an “R” next to their name! Fox news is without credibility and is a laughingstock, and what they did to Ron Paul is wrong. Having said that, I’ll still never vote for the man, as he advocates effective secession from the United States of America as a major part of his platform.

There should be a disclaimer at the beginning of Fox News… “This network is for entertainment purposes only.”

Seriously, how are they able to operate like this? Claiming to be factual, fair and balanced is a complete lie. How is this acceptable? Why are they not held accountable?

I love the way Ron Paul rose above the bull. He proved to remain focused, calm and unemotional. These are the qualities of a leader. Isn’t this what we need to lead our Country? Just look how distracted Obama is. We NEED Paul’s discipline.

When this man is being viciously attacked by the Establishment Left and the Establishment Fox Neo-Cons, he must be on target and doing the right thing. Dennis Kucinich said on Freedom Watch the other night that he wants an alliance between Ron Paul, himself, Ralph Nader, and the Progressives. So join the liberty movement people and forget about Obama helping you. Obama just gave an award to Bush…whom he apparently adores since he follows so many of his War and Wall Street policies.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/CTGKYFNDGU6KJEHQNNPXA64ZZI Pj

The award was given to Bush 43′s father, George H. W. Bush.

The main problem with Ron Paul for progressives, liberals, Democrats and most others who’re located ideologically anywhere to the left of Attila The Hun: he advocates the complete abolition of Social Security and Medicare, if not also of all government entirely. Polling has consistently indicated also that he’s simply not electable… though that’s only a snapshot indicator of future likelihood, is not itself determinative, and is fallible. With his noxious views, though, he ought probably to run for president of Somalia instead.

So what’s the big deal?? Fox has been airing deceptive film footage, not to mention outright lies, for years. It’s their standard MO for fabricating news and making sure that its “fair and balanced” news coverage adheres to all the GOP talking points. In truth, Fox News is no more than a political party propaganda pontificator, no different than Pravda and Tass, the old Soviet news outlets. I’ll never understand why the other more legitimate news services appear to accept Fox News as an equal.

Your problem is that you admit that you watch this garbage. I have never watched the Fox Entertainment Channel in my life. Anyone who watches this garbage gets the crap they deserve.

Now in about 25 seconds someone will come on here and say that Fox is a news source and its like looking for gold you have to pan through a lot of silt to find the gold and it doesn’t matter where you find it. 25…24….23….22….21…20…19….

More Bullshit! And why the previous statement on gold being where you find it is just not true. Fox is to news what iron pyrite is to gold!

The Fox Entertainment Channel was taken to court for lying about the news. It seems there is some kind of broadcast code that says the “news: if is is called “news” must attain a certain level of accuracy that the Fox Entertainment Channel where former employees have admitted that they just “make shit up,” fails regularly to attain. Murdoch and his lawyers chose to beat the charge by arguing that they were an “entertainment network,” not a “news network” in the proper sense. And that as such, they shouldn’t be required to adhere to the truth standards set for other news programming and that other news networks are required to adhere to.

The judge who heard the case watched several hours of Fox Entertainment Channel programming and agreed that what the Fox Entertainment Channel offered was “not news;” it was as Murdoch and his lawyers had argued–”entertainment.” That is why I call it the Fox Entertainment Channel because that is what Murdoch argued in court that the Channel provided not “news” as many think but “entertainment” and the judge agreed and so decreed.

So anyone who tells me they get their “news” at the Fox Entertainment Channel has been snookered twice. Not only is it not news, but Murdoch went to court and proved it wasn’t news.

Calling them “the conservative Fox News Channel” is as misrepresentative as what Fox News did to Paul. Fox News is a right-wing extremist organization, and like other extremist organizations, lying to present their view is normal behavior. Expecting fairness from a news organization is sensible. They are not fair, they are extremists intent on fomenting fear.

Exactly, they should have to give up their seat in the Presidential Briefing Room at the White House. Once the federal judge ruled that as Murdoch and his lawyers had argued that what the channel broadcast wasn’t “news” but “entertainment” they should have ended their masquerade, but not many news outlets covered the case including, for some reason, the Fox Entertainment Channel itself.

I would have thought Murdoch would have been proud to announce that he and his lawyers had prevailed in court, but I don’t think they ever even announced the judge’s decision on “The Fox Entertainment Channel.”

Yes! The Fox Entertainment Channel was charged with violating the truth criteria for the news but when they went to court Murdoch and his lawyers actually argued that what they showed wasn’t “news” at all but “entertainment”! The judge in the case watched several hours of Fox programming and agreed with Murdoch and his lawyers; it really wasn’t “news” at all but “entertainment.”

    And that’s a fact jack!

And the fact that you are relying on me, an old miserable grizzled bastard with no redeeming characteristics, social value or verifiable capacity for rational thought whatsoever, for this little bit of information, is further evidence of the undeniable infallibility of the free market system which some think should control everything or at least replace the greater part of the legal system in this country because all information is so freely available that no one could ever be mistaken!

I need some help, if you please. Many conservatives (of all vague stripes) have taken note of Dr. Paul’s victory at CPAC. Some allege that he is so popular **because** he is (intentionally?) attracting left-wing anti-war types into his supporters.

There are many liberal, progressive, left-wing readers here, but now and then I notice something possible about Dr. Paul. So I have a question:

Are you a liberal, progressive, left-winger who is attracted to Dr. Paul because of his antiwar views? If so, do/would you actually support him in a Republican primary, or in the general election for the presidency if he were a GOP or third-party candidate? If not, why not, given his antiwar views?

Do you know anyone of that description who would? Or would not?

I would very much appreciate hearing from you if you have views on this question, thank you.

Given the trajectory of American politics (downward, mostly) there are no sure things for ’12. People who think Obama has it locked up are deluded. The pace of events is no longer under anyone’s control and a guy like Paul can easily get traction.

    Here’s something for your consideration!

The median IQ in America is 100; that means that half the people in the country have IQs less than 100.

I think Fran’s IQ is greater than 100! Think about what that might mean.

Using the name Fox and News together in any sentence is an oxymoron. They wouldn’t know what real news is even if it came up and bit them on the backside. As for catching this, glad to hear someone did as I wouldn’t have. My TV doesn’t expend it’s power showing their drivel. Just be a waste of those watts coming down the power lines. Much better way to use them is reading all of the news on Raw Story and other truthful news sites.

  • http://www.rawstory.com/ Stumptownhero

But flat out wrong on how to run an orderly society in the 21st century that’s all!

In his utopian world we would see wide swings in economic activity as there would be no rules to soften the boom bust cycle or dial back the inherent greed of the human species.

Additionally his social views would lead to Shiite/Sunni type of tribalism between the races and the classes.

If you support this political philosophy sit back and try to envision how different his USA would be from what is was in the 1850′s.

  • http://www.rawstory.com/ Stumptownhero

Since the subject is Faux News I am compelled to post this again.

“The American fascist would prefer not to use violence. His method is to poison the channels of information. With a fascist the problem is never how best to present the truth but how best to use the news to deceive the public into giving the fascist and his group more money and more power.

They claim to be superpatriots, but they would destroy every liberty guaranteed by the Constitution. They demand free enterprise but are the spokesmen for monopoly and vested interest. Their final objective toward which all their deceit is directed is to capture political power so that, using the power of the state and the power of the market simultaneously, they may keep the common man in eternal subjugation”

Every single politician is a classist pig. They would not have achieved their station in life without being so. Since they are all pigs you can only compare them to each other.

Your problem is that you are just making this stuff up. You have no proof or evidence you are just spewing how you feel.

I don’t think Obama is doing a very good job either but I don’t think it’s because he has evil motives. I think he rubs too many people the wrong way and he has a hard time getting people to go along with him. What you see is what you end up with because all of his cronies are pushing their own agendas instead of his. It’s a mess. Bush was an incomparably bad president but at least he could get his ducks in a row.

You accuse him personally of being a “hater” but you must see how circumstances, misfortune and lack of forethought can end you up in the same place? You can see that our society is heavily biased toward the rich. Every event no matter what it is just seems to turn the ratchet tighter It’s the horrible evil that chomsky warns about and at this point expecting a single man like the president to stop it is like expecting the little boy with his finger in the dike to hold back the rising ocean waters. Eisenhower was right, the president is little more than the puppet of the security council. He has to do what they say or else terribly mysterious things will happen and he doesn’t want to go there.

  • Guest

True, the correct way to run an ordered society is with totalitarian force. Tribalism is alive and well stumptown. Like people with like professions and ambitions stick together. For example you probably gravitate to hairy lumberjack type men. Not my thing, so we probably won’t be having drinks anytime soon. The wide swings in economic activity can likely be attributed to a specific body that can artificially manipulate interest rates for (moderately) short-term aims. Also, I have thought about how the world would be if it was similar to 1850′s America. My naive conclusion is that it’s not to much damn different – except that now we’re in a much more dangerous spot in terms of bondage and oppression.

“They are very attracted to the foreign policy of less intervention overseas,” he said.

That’s exactly why I like him; although, I think his domestic platform is far too conservatively libertarian.

Has anyone else noticed that NO ONE except Ron Paul is talking about foreign policy and defense expenditures for our illegal wars for empire? There is no difference from Bush to Obama. Now why is that? It’s because the national security state is dictating foreign policy.

  • http://www.balmorheaprogressive.blogspot.com/ BaileyWuXiang

Right now I’m operating under a policy of “Anyone But Obama.” He betrayed progressives completely. Put that together with the growing coalition between Libertarians and Progressives, especially regarding foreign policy (war, deficit spending for war; the torture, rendition and Patriot Act; increasing restrictions on due process; illegal searches and seizures by the FBI and NSA; imperialism and interventionism overseas; the hijacking of foreign policy by the rogue terrorist state of Israel and its America lobbies, the wasted foreign aid), and Ron Paul is looking very attractive. And where Democrats are saying it’s a wasted vote and a betrayal, I say look at the wasted vote I gave Obama who has betrayed us in every way possible. I think he was lying and pandering all along.

Nothing new from Fox News. They should be forbidden during the next election or they gonna pull more magic rabbits out of the hat to deceive the public.

  • http://www.balmorheaprogressive.blogspot.com/ BaileyWuXiang

I’m a progressive. I like Ron Paul because of his broad view on foreign policy, not just his anti-war stance. I don’t like his conservatism on domestic policy but something has to be done about the notion that we can stimulate the economy via war spending. I think that is better done through domestic infrastructure spending and social programs. Ron Paul would disagree with the latter, but he has even expressed my distaste for the national security state which dictates foreign policy. I don’t know where he stands on the MORAL issue of war and I think it’s probably inaccurate to refer to his stance with terms like “anti-war,” which is more associated with a small section of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party. I think his position is more classically libertarian, which calls for a Constitutional view of defense as a domestic duty carried out by the states. Thus it’s more of a states rights issue with him as well as a distaste for foreign interventionism and attempts to police the world while building a foreign empire — things expressly criticized by the founding fathers (we didn’t want to be like England).

Foreign Policy is the basis for the Libertarian/Progressive coalition. We have grave differences on social programs at home but we both agree on domestic spending on the infrastructure as opposed to deficit spending on war and adventurism.

Finally, there is very strong agreement regarding civil liberties which are under attack, not just by the Patriot Act, but also via legislation to limit access to the internet and establishment of government control over it.

Both national parties are becoming more authoritarian and it is this statist view that concerns Libertarians in particular with increasing concerns now being voiced especially by progressive Democrats.

Another area of agreement is the need to rein in lobbyists, reverse the Supreme Court decision granting corporations the status of individual citizenship and the death of the Republic and replacement by corporatocracy.

Ron and Rand Paul are both racists.

In the late 80′s and early 90′s Ron Paul ran a local newsletter of about 8 pages. The media such as Houston Chronicle, Austin Chronicle, discovered these newsletters. Ron Paul tired to distance himself from it. Paul’s bullshit doesn’t wash. He isn’t denying the newsletter, he claims he never read them. Is anyone going to buy that he never read his own newsletter?

CNN also approached him on it not long ago back in 2008. Ron Paul did the bullshit dance then.

But this is no bullshit because it is on record. Republican Congressman from Texas. Paul was the only member of congress to vote against honoring the 1964 Civil Rights bills on its 40th anniversary.

His son is also a racist. He hates the Civil Rights Act as well and he is all for segregation.

That is why they are so popular with Tea Baggers. The Paul’s are the new KKK look, but the same old KKK pea brain.

Disliking this act does not make you a racist. Period. That’s like saying “I dislike the War in Iraq”. Well, you’re clearly against our defense, liberty and the Iraqi people.

Please provide evidence that Rand is “all for” segregation.

You can’t point to certain groups liking the Paul’s and claim that it’s evidence for their racism. They have a variety of supporters from all nationalities. By your logic, that means they’re pretty multi-cultural, right?

Also provide evidence of any racist legislation that they have voted on or written. None right?

So even if they WERE racist, it doesn’t impact their politics (and more importantly, America) in the least.

“It was a simple mistake” Said Michael Clemente, Senior Vice President of Republican National Fox News”. “One of our young interns thought Ron Paul was a DemocRAT. Unfortunately, the intern remembered seeing a (D) next to Ron Paul’s name in a FOX and Friends Re-run. That was the episode that Rep. Paul 1st came out against the war and claimed that the great one, President George W. Bush, was wrong to start the wars. Now that these wars are Obama’s fault for having us in 2 unnessesary and costly wars, we can admit our mistake against Republican Rep. Paul.

Yes, but sometimes a No vote is a vote for redistribution of wealth:

But he did vote No on raising the minimum wage because that is a transfer of wealth and just takes away people’s incentive to work:

    • Voted NO on increasing minimum wage to $7.25. (Jan 2007)

And he also voted No on restricting employer’s from using dirty tricks during union organizing drives to prevent another transfer of wealth.

    • Voted NO on restricting employer interference in union organizing. (Mar 2007)

I think he rubs too many people the wrong way and he has a hard time getting people to go along with him. What you see is what you end up with because all of his cronies are pushing their own agendas instead of his.”

So you see, folks, according to fran all politicians are classist pigs EXCEPT Obama. It’s not Obama’s fault. Obama is just a good guy who “rubs people the wrong way” and can’t influence others. Also, he’s being muscled by cronies who are really running the show.

Tell me fran, how did the dolt ever make it to our nation’s highest office? Here’s a hint. he’s a classist pig. Who the fuck do you think gets elected to head Harvard’s Law Review??

You spend so much time and energy criticizing Paul for being a war monger yet have the nerve to defend the war pig, war escalator, Obama?? Wake the hell up, fran!

Stump, the mere fact of his being part black and looking black has been exploited from day one. Any criticisms of his policies, of his behavior while discussing his policies and garnering support for them, of his divisiveness while instigating highly charged polarities on the left/right divide, were all labeled racist. That has been one the primary assertions of his presidency, that if you disagree it is because you are racist.

Only now that dems and progressives and others are onto him, has that subsided.

An honest man would not have allowed race to be used in that manner, to instigate strife – but he is a liar and a cheat – not because he part black or part white, but because he is a power hungry, money grubbing, immoral human piece of walking corruption.

    There you go again!
lumping the entire Fox team as doing something wrong. You mention Bill O’Reilly four times in the articile and don’t evern mention the news anchor ” Bill Hemmer until midway through the story.

Call Hemmer out and then ask Fox how they plan to deal with this, Hemmer was only mentioned once and O’Reilly four times ..Give me a break.
