The official position of the US Secretary of State is that countries around the world should respect their citizens’ rights to free speech, free expression and free assembly — and that’s precisely what Sec. Hillary Clinton said during a Tuesday speech at George Washington University.

Unfortunately, as she spoke, not 15 feet in front of her, a series of events unfolded that utterly undermined the message.

Former CIA agent Ray McGovern, an outspoken critic of US foreign policy, stood silently in the auditorium’s center aisle, and turned his back on Clinton.

For his symbolic and otherwise non-disruptive protest, he was quickly accosted by security agents. As they struggled to pull him out of the room, a CNN news camera caught the tail end of the ordeal.

“SO THIS IS AMERICA?!? This is America? Who are you?” the 71-year-old McGovern shouted as he was hauled away.

He claims to have been “bloodied” and “bruised” (photo) by one man in uniform and an unnamed, plain-clothes security worker.

Clinton didn’t even skip a beat.

McGovern was being represented by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF).

“It is the ultimate definition of lip service that Secretary of State Clinton would be trumpeting the U.S. government’s supposed concerns for free speech rights and this man would be simultaneously brutalized and arrested for engaging in a peaceful act of dissent at her speech,” a spokeswoman for the group said in a published statement.

US officials came under similar rhetorical fire in December, when they announced plans to host “World Press Freedom Day.” The announcement was made on the same day that Sen. Joesph Lieberman (I-CT) declared that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should be prosecuted for espionage over his role in the release of US diplomatic cables.

“When people die because we have hypocrites at the top of our government, that compels me to make a statement in whatever way I can,” McGovern later told Rob Kall, who posted the remarks to Op Ed News. “It was not the theme of her speech that I was protesting. It was her war policies and support of Mubarak.”

This video is from CNN, broadcast Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011.

Priceless. You just cant pay for this kind of irony.

Pretty jacked up. I can understand the Secret Service being jumpy, and perhaps this was the wrong forum for some kind of protest. It’s hard to say what the right thing to do was.

The United States of Amerika: The biggest hypocritical, warmongering and corrupt government on this planet which pretends to champion freedom, liberty and democracy, when in fact it hates and fears those things the most. Freedom for the elite — to Hell with everyone else.

This is more evidence of that fact.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HYXHXYL2WBVIEC4B3V7KTOJNRM Eric

Jumpy? The man stood up and turned his back, he didn’t brandish a weapon nor even shout out his opposition. Furthermore, McGovern is clearly well known to the Secret Service and to any other security service present that day.

The differences between the Bush and Obama administrations are fast disappearing wit every day.

  • Anonymous

Irony indeed. When this death-monger was operating and you would have done this, you probably would not be here reading this. The train already left the station and he missed the ride. Whoever this passive aggressive killer served under , reagan, bush, etc., he was too brainwashed to do this then. If he had, this whole ordeal now would never have happened.

  • Anonymous

Yep. This separation of the classes in America is why Wall Street isn’t in prison along with all the war criminals.
Basically America is just a two bit banana republic disguised as a champion of freedom and democracy.

Really, the Owl of Minerva always flies at Dusk! If he knew then what he knows now…..so often hindsight comes late. I imagine he realises that there is more to the machinations of governments than what his perspective allowed when he was recruited, subsequent recognition of the evils that control America are, and have never been what they’re purported to be, and certainly aren’t any different now – his shift likely was an awakening that he wished had come earlier, it is his lesson to us that can guide the young recruit, so maybe they can blow the whistle and stop the malicious murder of innocents for corporate gains. A journey starts with the first step – apathy gives up before it starts.

This is a totally disgusting story and Hillary’s actions are deplorable (as usual). The group Voters For Peace has set up a website where you can write a letter to Hillary Clinton letting her know that her hypocritical speech on free speech while Ray McGovern was being abused will not be tolerated!

I hope this is a wake up call for everyone about the ever expanding Police State in our country.

And why didn’t the security people just ignore him like he deserved?

What a scathingly brilliant idea, gerry1230. Why is it they came out for a foreign country that is thousands of miles away, but not for our own?

I have been in the same room with Hillary, and I had to practically give a blood sample, a pee test, and a leg to be there.

Only one tiny difference between these Dems and the $hrub Club, the $hrub Club would never have let McGovern in, in the first place, and they would have arrested him for just being there.

    I think Hillary was prewarned.

Usually people change because they get caught, it isn’t working out or they are tired of lying, dodging and hiding. At the time of pulling the trigger on something that hurts someone, they are comforted with the fact that they will get away with it because a higher power gives them a go ahead. If at the time you can’t see the pain you are inflicted, I give you a no pass.

“If a person in a position of authority ordered you to deliver a 400-volt electrical shock to another person, would you follow orders? Most people would answer this question with an adamant no, but Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted a series of obedience experiments during the 1960s that demonstrated surprising results. These experiments offer a powerful and disturbing look into the power of authority and obedience.

“The social psychology of this century reveals a major lesson: often it is not so much the kind of person a man is as the kind of situation in which he finds himself that determines how he will act.” –Stanley Milgram, 1974

The Milgram experiment as seen in “The Smartest Guys In The Room.”

Maybe they created a situation so they COULD react to it. Like the real estate shills that get people into a room to sell a large housing development and a person stands up and says, “I bought this and it is a rip off, I want my money back”, the 50 or so people attending are raising their brows and I person very quickly stands up and says, “I’ll buy that house back from you, double for double the money. Follow me to my room”………………The people attending are amazed!!!!

He was protesting the wars and secret detentions that the U.S. government is still engagin in. Mrs. Clinton is calling for freedom of speech and protest, yet U.S. foreign policy has been to stand with dictators under the reagan, bushdaddy, her husbands, littleboybush’s and now this regime. She is front and center defending U.S. curtailment of the basic freedoms she claims to defend.

So we’re supposed to allow anybody or any number of people, to disrupt a speech…as a form of their “free speech” rights? This clown got exactly what he deserved…and he knows it, too.

  • Anonymous

Yes, I do think second thoughts are always seen as attempts to cover up an initial glitch. And the “Butterfly Effect” helps good or bad. And time lines produce good or bad: You get into your car and discover you forgot something. Go back to get it and when you approach the intersection a few minutes later, there is a wreck. Some one ran the light. If you had been “on top”, not forgetting your coffee, you might have been in that wreck. Consequences for actions.

  • Anonymous

It’s “irony,” it’s just another jerk trying to garner headlines. Would YOU or anyone here allow anybody, at any time and place, to do the same…while a speech is being delivered by a government official?

  • Fedupin10

    Denny,

I have to disagree with you on this one. Ray has been a beacon of light exposing the government’s corruption. Unlike others who did his job and then just silently went away, he has spoken out. Better late than never.

So, many here feel, because of our “free speech” right, anybody, anywhere…should be able to stand in the middle of a room, disrupting a speech by a government official? How about at the SOTU speech? SHould we allow any group who feels they have the same right…to stand in the middle of the room while the president speaks? How about suring arguments with the Supreme Court?

    Ridiculous.

I agree with Milgram. We have a society that rewards unethical immoral behaviour and then wonder why this behaviour abounds. The culture sets the stage on which we act. Not that it absolves us from our wrong doing. It just explains it. B.F.Skinner wrote about those who controll the ” contingencies” of behaviour and seemed to think the controllers were more responsible for the outcome than the subjects. Under the right ” contingencies” we are all capable of anything. That’s a bad thing, but it is a good thing too. It’s how we change.

Perhaps you should read McGovern’s bio Denny, before you denigrate his reputation. he was the analyst and reporter of intelligence and served in NO POLICY recommendation roles throughout his career. In other words, he presented the intelligence findings but did not get to offer input on how the findings were used. AND…..he’s been a STRONG critic of every administration since retiring in the lat 90′s.

    The more you know…

McLean, Virginia — I rue the day that my wife and I voted for Hillary Clinton in the Virginia primary. Her “landing under fire at Tusla” lie cooked me. Maybe God will forgive her for her lies, but many will never forget.

It revolts me to see Secretary Hillary Clinton today ignoring and even punishing those who attempt to exercise fundamental human rights. Only if enough Americans protest her outrageous, illegal behavior will anyone be able to call her to halt.

  • Guest

Yeah your right, its all Ray McGovern’s fault. If only he had turned his back sooner, none of this would be happening.

  • Guest

What was he protesting?! Are you serious? Aww, fuck it, I’m not even gonna waste my time.

  • Anonymous

So now its illegal to stand up and turn around?

Clinton, you are a drunken, neutered, old bag, with nothing but disease inside you. You and your broken-hearted, plantation master, Old Bill, really deserve every single insult that can be mustered toward you.

You are an insult to democracy, laws and human freedoms, anything healthy, anything real. You need to stop associating yourself with the American people, or with normal people in general. You are a freak with no support or respect, except from your handlers. And we all know that is temporary.

You are a vampire with no life but that to serve the darkness.

I’ve watched your pathetic life, since you were young, baiting and switching people, lying, stealing, dragging down our institutions, presidency, foreign policy, to the disgusting level of cheap dictators, torturers, spies, spooks, and paid murderers.

And now we’ve come to the end. Bill is going to meet his “hereafter master”, smelling like sulphur, leaving a trail of destruction and dishonesty, toward many poor people in the world, and toward our own American spirit of competition and progress. He sold us all out. And so did you.

If I could make a suggestion to you… Take your pathetic life, or what is left of it, your pathetic, homely freak of a daughter, that you continually shove in front of an un-interested public, except to gawk, and make the ultimate exit that other head-of-state state freaks and dirty dictators and go, into some sort of exile. Just get out of everyones face. Forever. You and your family are nothing but recurring nightmare.

    You make me sick.

Thank you so very much, Mr. McGovern. People like you are going to help us restore humanity after the filth that is Clinton-Bush-Obama-Goldman.

And the powers that be just couldn’t stand to see some one actually using their freedom, I’m sure they would love you though. I bet had you been in the crowd, you would have been fervently clapping, foam spewing out from the crusty corners of your dull mouth.

McGovern was a mid-level officer in the CIA in the 1960s where his focus was analysis of Soviet policy toward Vietnam. McGovern was one of President Ronald Reagan’s intelligence briefers from 1981–85; he was in charge of preparing daily security briefs for Reagan, Vice President George H.W. Bush, the National Security Advisor, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Cabinet. Later, McGovern was one of several senior CIA analysts who prepared the President’s Daily Brief (PDB) during the first Bush administration.

Upon retirement, McGovern was awarded the Intelligence Commendation Medal from Bush (which he later returned, see below[1]) and worked for Washington-based non-profits before becoming co-director of the Servant Leadership School in Washington.

I don’t think I am understanding why this guy is “bad.”

  • Anonymous

So one man decides it is best to turn his back in protest. Not a very effect non-violent protest, even though it sound very creative. It is easy to the confusion, and sequences mishandling by the security personnel. Seeing someone with the back turned to the speaker would suggest two things. That they wanted to leave. Or, they are obstructing the the aisle.

There were more effective methods for him to express his point.

The irony is that in his attempt to ignore Clinton, Clinton did ignore him.

“On September 14, 2001, President George W. Bush declared a national emergency with respect to the terrorist attacks of three days earlier. The National Emergencies Act of 1976 requires the President to renew this state of emergency on an annual basis if he wishes it to remain in effect. Bush renewed it every year he was in office, and now President Barack Obama has extended it for the second time during his term.”

John Kerry and Hillary Clinton Do Not Defend Free Speech

In September, 2007 John Kerry did not intervene to help a student who asked him a question about Kerry’s involvement in Skull and Bones. When police stepped forth and interrupted the on going dialogue between Kerry and Andrew Meyer, Kerry did not verbally shift modes and defend the threatened right of free speech. Kerry did assert his own right to speak and said, “Let me answer his question.” however while witnessing the police continue to interfere Kerry did not intervene to restrain the police. Kerry said nothing in response to seeing Andrew Meyer interrupted, accosted, tackled, tasered, and hauled away from Kerry’s event. Kerry made no apology within the following days so I wrote him a letter calling him out on not standing tall for free speech. Kerry did not answer me. His actions show that John Kerry has lost the spirit of free speech that was held high by the Founding Fathers, and is spoken of so highly in our schools and is the backbone of our freedom of press and political discourse and democratic decision making.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-Vy8fFnz18

I am appalled to learn about a February, 2011, event involving Hillary Clinton. It is very disturbing that she did not pause in her speaking and did not object to the removal of Ray McGovern, a great American patriot. Ray McGovern gave the daily intelligence briefing to President Reagan and the first President Bush. As a long time CIA analyst he helped write the daily Presidential briefings for many more years. He is member of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) and is one of our best writers on security issues. I have met him and spoken to him about our country and its need to reaffirm the basic principles of the Constitution. I now know that Hilliary Clinton has also lost the spirit of free speech and no longer can be seen as standing with the Founding Fathers.

I call on all Representatives and Senators who do care about the civil right of free speech and our other Constitutional rights to speak out against this neglect on the part of both John Kerry and Hillary Clinton in not speaking and acting to reaffirm the essence of our Constitutional rights. If we do not stand tall for Constitutional rights when they are abused we will lose them. Please if you agree speak out now. Peace and hugs.

That man is no clown.. He was a great patriot and served in the CIA. Every morning he handed presint bush and others before him the daily security brief. Do you think that maybe he knows a few things that you do not about whats happening to this country? You sir, are part of the problem. Stop watching The corperate media, and do some home work! You’ll find that they are making a fool of us!

Guess what else isn’t on HuffingtonPost — the U.N. Security Council resolution that the U.S. is now forced not to veto due to anti-American vitriol among Arab nations in revolution. The resolution will censure Israel for illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories including Jerusalem. Indeed, HuffPo has been Zionist for a long time and uses censorship to quash all voiced opposition to Israel in its comments section.

Oh, the heavy irony and batshit cRaZiNeSs of Clinton’s comments… as Ray McGovern is dragged out, bloodied and arrested for silently protesting her chickenhawkery of unnecessary wars, and longtime support of Mubarak.

Unlike the Florida freakshow that got the taser at Kerry’s speech, this was a SILENT protest, nondisruptive.

I’ll give Clinton the Benefit Of The Doubt in that: a) I can understand being caught flat-footed in that kind of situation; b) if it she were George W. Trifectaboy, she would have made some snarky, weasely joke at the poor guy’s expense; and c) I’d bet a dollar to a donut that if she *had* stopped and said “leave that man alone,” her security detail is probably going to ignore her and drag the man out anyway.

Still, this is one of those shitty Rove tactics that have never been removed from the Secret Service playbook.

No one is allowed to criticize Israel or mention 911. Actually no one is allowed to believe any conspiracies or they will be banned even though 1 million people in the USA are locked up on criminal conspiracy charges. HuffPost is a corporate Neocon rag.

  • Jaimie11

It was definitely a pacifist demonstration against hypocrisy. Wrong kind of forum?!?!? Oh, I forgot, there are free speech zones some miles down the road for that sort of silly behavior, Mr. Meek.

  • Anonymous

What if she’d stopped and shouted “leave Ray McGovern alone — you realize I’m talking about freedom of speech here”? She knew exactly who he was, and I think it would have looked better for Clinton to have said something — even if it didn’t stop her security detail from dragging McGovern out.
And you know what really kills me about this? McGovern once confronted Rumsfeld several years ago with a question about our unnecessary wars, and Rummy did stop the security detail from dragging McGovern out merely for asking the question. It’s a very sad day indeed when Rummy comes off as more respectful the first amendment than Hilary, a so called “Liberal.”

Ray McGovern truly does have the highest integrity and has been speaking out for decades and a tireless fighter for truth and justice in gov’t.

McGovern is a true patriot. He was the insider’s insider in his day delivering the daily Presidential Briefing every morning for the CIA. He KNOWS when our governent is lying and he was one of the few that stood up before the Iraq War and exposed the criminals. He never ceases to be a truth teller, even when it costs him his freedom. McGovern can sleep at night. You have to wonder how many in DC can’t or shouldn’t sleep as soundly?

Ray McGovern was protesting that Clinton is a big phony and a hypocrite. Add to this all the Wikileaks cables which exposed what Clinton really says and thinks behind the scenes, that she has to apologize for, and we see a bigger picture about Hillary Clinton.

Hillary is a Nazi lying for the corporate/financial/militarist EMPIRE which IS this ‘Vichy’ government infecting America, like a cancer.

Shameful lack of mention by MSM of Ray McGovern’s beating by Hillary’s jack-booted SS thugs.

This can not be ignored anymore than the Nazis’ Krystalnacht.

    Clinton out NOW!

    Clinton out NOW!

Just like Mubarak — this criminal Clinton must be GO NOW.

Obama will HAVE TO remove Hillary — she will never be able to make a speech in America again, because the people will not stand for it. Actually, they will stand every time, like McGovern, with their backs turned to her.

Obama will implicate himself as the ‘smooth talking’ political pawn of EMPIRE if they try the normal (Empire) “crisis management” propaganda shit of trying to blame and remove the low level SS security thugs, and claim that Hillary could do nothing about it.

The bitch could and should have, using the power invested in her sorry ass, told the security thugs, “Stop that. He’s an American citizen. You can’t treat Americans like that!”

But sub-Fuhrer Hillary didn’t do that. In fact, if the video is carefully reviewed it is very likely that Hillary looked toward her security force when she saw McGovern stand, as if to say, “Get that prick” — and they did! In other words, Hillary probably gave the eye signal, the nod, the commander’s stare to order, “Get Him, Hurt Him, Make him disappear”.

The movie, “Medium Cool” shows camera men filming turtles that live(d) on an island that was used as an atomic bomb test site and the turtles were confused and instead of heading out to sea, they wandered further in land and cooked in the sun. It showed them on their shells dying. The camera men could have flipped them and pointed them to sea-they didn’t. I just expect people to make a good decision at the time. And, beware that the tories “scrub” your wikipedia.

Maybe, but if CIA dudes change there is usually a reason for it. I heard him on the radio here in LA about a year ago and certain things he said made me suspect. They need a lot of ‘left gate keepers’ so to speak nowdays. Such as we found with Zsa Zsa Huffington. In any case ex CIA guys have, for me anyway, a WAY higher bar to pass in order for me to take them seriously. I’m not saying it can’t ever happen though, Frank Snepp is a case in point. They made him suffer for it though.

  • Anonymous

Right about wiki… I do not want to repeat my post from above but your posting made me remember (or cosinder) something else. There was a rather intense battle between Cheney/Bush and the CIA in terms of how to progress with this Iraq/mid-east oil thing. Cheney basically dragged the CIA along against the will of many there. This guy showed up at that time. One must indeed be circumspect when considering the credulity of ex CIA guys. Also that does not give them some Get Out Of Jail Free card on their murderous acts form the past (and i do not care if it might be considered a more peripheral role).

I can’t wait what they’re both (her and the other one in the White House) going to say when the shit hits the fan here and they start killing their own people. I just can’t wait! That ought to be better than all the speeches combined: the one hailing war at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, the one in Africa, the one in Egypt, Shillary’s peace charade with the Palestinians.

Indeed. Or like in 2001 when he said: “All in all, it’s been a fabulous year for Laura and me.” when 9/11 had taken place only four months before.
Or when he stood there being interviewed by reporters on the golf course and said: “I call upon all nations to do everything they can to stop these terrorist killers. Thank you. Now watch this drive.”
Or when… ah sh*t, I’d better stop, or I could go on for ever here!

  • Johnny Warbucks

He is one sick mother fucker. And a stupid one to boot. But he was right on one thing: 2001 was a very good year for him. It bought him another 4 in the WH.

Hmm. I don’t know… Maybe those two will stop making speeches when and if they finally decide to start going Tiananmen on all our asses. Of course if Sarah Palin wins in 2012, going Tienanmen on the ass of anyone who isn’t one of her “real Americans” will no doubt be her very proudest moments! That pig will immediately put on her lipstick and go on Fox “News” to make (incoherent, ungrammatical) speeches galore.

  • Johnny Warbucks

I can pic things going here much like in Egypt. I think that is classic 21st Century Elite. They’ll put up the state teevee (FAUX News) to the task of misinformation. Glenn Beck will be crying, accusing the protesters of raping his grandmother and sodomizing his dog while showing pix on the teevee of a football game or something. They’ll be killing us by the millions and asking Israel what to say to justify it all. And don’t forget another thing, all the reich wing nuts have guns. And ammo. Lots and lots of ammo. So, they could very well blame them for the carnage. And don’t worry about good ole Sarah. She’s done. She pissed off the wrong people with that blood libel shit. No doubt, somebody set her up. Have you noticed how quiet she’s been lately? That’s because she’s finished. They need another white boy, a cowboy type for 2012, after all, he will be the one they need to stage the coup and lead us straight into Fascism. Mamma Grizzly couldn’t pull that one. She can’t even pull her own pantyhose up past her knees.

  • Anonymous

It looked like the man was being peaceful. If protesting in this manner gets a man bruised and bloodied, maybe these fascist thugs would prefer people doing the opposite. I’m all for passive protest, it’s the right thing to do, and gains the most ground. As a combat veteran who has served my country with honor, seeing a fellow veteran treated as Mcgovern was, all I feel is anger towards this goverment. I have been seeing a lot of police brutallity lately, and the people being beaten up seem harmless. I don’t get it, how was an unarmed 70 year old man standing with his back turned to the speaker a threat? Why did he deserve to be treated that way? Word to all you Nazi thugs, this aint 1939, and this aint Germany. We are legion, and we will shut you down!

  • Anonymous

It was a NeoConservative Operation within the CIA and intelligence who presented Bush & Dick with the ‘right’ evidence. For instance, Curveball was considered by the CIA to be completely discredited. Whose evidence was used, against CIA recommendation, to provide the WMD justification to go to war with Iraq? Curveball’s evidence, discredited by CIA – yet presented by Bush & Dick.

After the failure to find WMDs in Iraq, Bush & Dick blamed the CIA. Later, in 2007, Dick tried to have his own Gulf of Tonkin Incident (since thoroughly shown to be a deception by The Government against the American people) with Iran. The CIA, after years of being falsely blamed by The Administration, changed The NIE to show that Iran was NOT developing a nuclear weapon. Thereby undermining Bush & Dick and turning Bush’s last two years into a lame-duck Presidency.

That action by The CIA, and with further disclosures by The Pentagon (who was incidentally furious at Bush & Dick for smearing them) showed that Dick’s ‘Straight of Hormuz’ incident was nothing more than routine.

Any supporter of The Iraq War has to answer one question in order to justify that war, “Where are the WMDs?”

If they cannot answer that question, they are supporters of war criminals. Nothing more than Brown Shirts to Bush & Dick.

I guess you’re ok with kids being raped in front of their parents by a stick dipped in battery acid?
No problem with kids having their testicles crushed with pliers in front of their parents either?
Secret prisons are ok? The Patriot Act written before 911 is cool too?
How about the military grade nano thermate in the 911 dust, no problem there either, right?

Not only beating up a dissident but also as Hillary was pontificating on freedom of speech the department of justice was grabbing data from peoples’ twitter, facebook and yahoo accounts to snoop on their on-line activities with the intention of putting some of them in jail.

Yes Hillary Clinton is the ultimate hypocrite. I see a pattern emerging – her predecessor Colin Powell was a liar too. His lies led us into the Iraq war.
