WASHINGTON – Four in ten devotees of the Fox News Channel fear that American Muslims want to establish Islamic Sharia law in the United States, according to a new survey.

A survey released this week by the Public Religion Research Institute found that viewers who trust Fox News as their primary news source have a dramatically more negative opinion of Muslims than those who trust other sources.

Internals of the PRRI poll, obtained by the Washington Post‘s Greg Sargent, reveal additionally startling statistics about viewers of the conservative-leaning Fox News Channel.

The survey found that “41% of Republicans who most trust Fox News believe that American Muslims want to establish Shari’a law as law of the land in the United States, compared to 23% of Republicans who most trust other news sources and 22% of the general public.”

Thirty-one percent of Republicans fear that US Muslims want Sharia, as compared to 15 percent of Democrats, according to the poll.

Eighty-two percent of viewers who most trust Fox News said it would be a good idea to investigate American Muslims for extremism, as compared to 60 percent of Republicans who trust other sources and 56 percent of the general public.

Republican Rep. Peter King of New York has announced his intention to hold such hearings.

Sharia refers to a system of laws and customs derived from the Koran, one in which there is no separation of church and state. It has been used to justify theocracies and religious dictatorships in Muslim nations.

In recent years, Republican lawmakers and high-ticket candidates have — with no apparent merit — touted fears about Sharia law taking hold in the United States. Some states have taken up preemptive measures to ban the system.

The PRRI poll found that 65 percent of Fox devotees believe American Muslims “have not done enough to oppose extremism in their communities,” as compared to 47 percent of the general public who hold the same view.

A recent study by the University of Maryland found that Fox News viewers are also more likely to believe pervasive falsehoods about US politics and world affairs, especially when those untruths are about President Barack Obama.

Baggers, birthers, and Birchers. The Fox fans are just a bunch of regressive clowns that know next to nothing about nothing. Some of the dumbest Americans ever!

  • 1984

Here is that fear center in the brain again.

Bill O’Reilly said MSNBC is anti American. Bill doesn’t have to give evidence as to why. Fox Fraud News knows their stupid audience. Fox knows how to milk the money off their viewers by giving their viewers the view their viewers want.

Fox is a client of Frank Luntz what does that tell you?

Fox has Dick Morris and Dennis Miller, those two add up to zero.

The Fox viewers fear that this nation will, a least by tomorrow, be a Muslim theocratic state splits my gut for some reason. I don’t why but I keep cracking up at the thought of Fox viewers and how insane they are.

Don’t the Fox viewers know the ruling rich elite will not let anyone run this country but the ruling rich elite. Unless of course the rich ruling elite can appoint themselves as Pope of the U.S. I’m sure Fox viewers won’t mind that and we can bring back the scarlet letter and look the other way while the rich ruling elite live in debauchery, kidnap kids and rape them, then it will be okay.

True…its proven that FOX viewers have no idea whats going on…it’s not Sharia law they should be worried about..it’s the “Nazism” coming from the right-wing

  • Guest

Yeah, they are all total idiots compared to CNN “devotees”. But not nearly as stupid as the MSNBC “Devotees” Interestingly enough PBS “devotees” had the largest penis size…..

I am sure there is a tny minority of Muslims in the US that think Sharia would be great, although I have never met any. All the Muslim immigrants that I have met, immigrated her because they love our freedom, and want it for themselves.
Now, how many Christians would like to see a new Christian (read Old Testament) legal system in the US ?
Should we investigate, or just dismiss it with a pffffttt ?
    Pfffftttt.
King is such a douche that I’m sure he could care less how many tax dollars as wasted in investigating the opinions of a handful of religious cranks.
    WHERE ARE THE JOBS ???

  • H.P. Loathecraft

Dennis Miller, “comedian”. Funny how cancervative “comedians” are neither funny or successful.
    How can that be?

  • H.P. Loathecraft

    Fact: Fox makes you stupid.
Conversely, being stupid makes you gravitate towards Fox which in turn makes you stupider.

Ha ! Beck has all the Fox viewers convinced that Nazism is a liberal/progressive movement.
    Absolutely unbelievable.
Didn’t you know ? Hippies are actually fascists ! Hitler was reincarnated as The Beatles !
Love your neighbor actually means put the trade union workers in concentration camps.
They are far beyond being disturbingly wrong. They are staking out a place in bizzarro world where they will be utterly unaffected by any facts or reason.

  • BrainRagYell

Let’s see — FOX was wrong about ACORN, wrong about Sherrod, have been caught lying about “Obamacare” and Climate Change, Bill O’Reily doesn’t know how the tides work and has now decided that his little buddy Beck is off the rails, and yet you think that FOX viewers have a better mechanism for distinguishing reality from perception?

MSNBC and PBS are the only ones who hold themselves accountable when they make mistakes, and all of their pundits are college graduates.

CNN is lately just window dressing, barely more than a screen saver.

But I guess you knows best, Travis.

A more interesting poll would be comparing the percentages of American Muslims who want sharia law in the US to the percentages of Fox News viewers who would like us to be ruled by absolute Christian Biblical law (stoning for adultery, merger of religion and state, etc.) which is very similar to Sharia law. I’m willing to bet the Fox News viewers would be more in favor of it than the typical American Muslim.

  • dk504

Idiots. Sadly I must include one of my brothers. Idiots.

  • DesertSun59

    BWAHAHAHAHA.

Those brown-skinned Muslims are comin’ ta getcha!!!!!! There will be a stoning each and every day in America until the entire nation converts.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHHA!

  • Anonymous

The PRRI poll also found that 95 percent of Fox devotees don’t believe in “separation of church and state”, even though it’s written in the U.S. Constitution. The other 5 percent believe God wrote the U.S. Constitution. Fox devotees also believe, by 100%, that Christianity is the only religion that should be practiced in America and all other religions should be abolished and outlawed and anyone practicing religions other than Christianity should be dragged to death behind a Ford F-150 pick up truck. Also, 100% of Fox believers think every car in America should have a bumper sticker that reads, “PRAISE JESUS!”, and any car with a peace sign sticker on it should be destroyed with a rocket propelled grenade.

An old fart at work, your typical right winger, told me, as if it was true — factually, actually true — that Sharia Law WAS MOST DEFINITELY coming to America. He said, “Look at Europe! It’s already there!” I told him he was insane. He then looked at me like I was insane.

Kansas legislators are trying to legalize the murder of abortion doctors. That is American-style Sharia law. What does the polls say about that. I guess if murder is committed with a Christian gun, held by a Christian hand, that makes murder okay.

Most will say they have no problem with Jews, just Israeli Jews. Most ignore what Israelis have to deal with and blame Israel for Israeli government decisions. They say they are just anti-Zionist and not anti-Jew. They just don’t like it when Jews assert their rights. Most have a one-sided view of the issues and won’t be bothered with facts-much like a conservative.

  • Guest

I agree. Americans don’t have to worry about Sharia Law here. It’s much, much more likely, and even perhaps inevitable, that the Right Wing Authoritarians will succeed in passing laws making Christianity the ‘official’ religion, and impose their brand of Christian Fascism on the rest of us. Chris Hedges has warned of this.

  • http://twitter.com/carlocaraluzzo ithinkrevolution

Well, according to those same people we have been living under Christian Law since the founding of the country but conservative chrisitans.
First of all Fox viewers. The Founding Fathers were NOT Christian. Most of them were outspoken of their distrust of the Christian Church. This drive to Christian extremism did not start in America until 1980 when Ronald Reagan and the Republicans invited them into the process. Sort of like inviting a pedophile to a kides birthday party.
In the second place, please explain to me how Fox viewers came to the conclusion that American Muslims wanted to establish Sharia Law in the US? Has some Muslim group stated this is their purpose? Have some secret documents surfaced showing an American Muslim conspiracy?
No, there is no conspiracy. Fox fear mongering for political purposes and to keep its viewers in a high state of fear to make them easier to control.
Fox is an American cancer. A poisonous, socially irresponsible organization that makes the entire media look bad by even claiming to be a “news” organization.
America, here is the real scoop. The Founding Fathers knew very well the dangers of religion in politics. THIS is the reason for the First Amendant. Like everything else, christians believe it only applies if you are one of the more than 400 christian cults. This is a religion who is so fractious that it generates a spin off just about every 4 years. We need to keep our public laws secular, designed for ALL people, and keep our religions inside the churches, temples, and outhoiuses WHERE THEY BELONG.

Since these abject failures who will watch and listen to these charlatans have no ability to separate fact from fiction with the will of their own, the Shari law will not tolerate such mental defiencies, sees no reason for them to exist, so therefore, stoning this subject is the mandate of the day!!

Simple. By definition conservatives are not creative people. Hence, the overwhelming majority of the world’s greatest comics, writers, musicians, artists, poets, actors and directors are liberals.

Of course, it also could be that the conservative sense of humor tends to be unsophisticated and crude. Most neither understand nor appreciate comedic forms such as satire, irony and parody.
And face it, when was the last time you saw a self-deprecating Republican?

  • Anonymous

This is a favorite tactic of disingenuous right-wingers, claiming that others are out to do what they are the ones really out to do. In this case, the propagandists at Fox “Big Lie” News are claiming that “some people” are out to establish sharia law in America, with sharia law being the utter stripping of rights from all women, turning them all into property of the males in any sharia law society. Women in sharia law countries have to get permission from the males before doing anything or even going anywhere AND they can’t get an abortion.

Fox “Big Lie” News fronts for the religious fundamentalists in our country, a group aptly named the American Taliban, a group run by a bunch of women-hating men who view all women as subservient to them AND want to forbid an American woman getting an abortion, no matter what the circumstances.

So, of course, the liars at Fox “Big Lie” News claim that “others” are out to impose sharia law on freedom-loving American women and men, all in an attempt to deflect people from realizing that the conservatives at Fox “Big Lie” News are the real cheerleaders for imposing sharia law on American society.

IOW, if Republicans and the liars at Fox “Big Lie” News were really serious about stopping sharia law from appearing anywhere in America, they’d devote most of their time going after the “Christian” religious fundamentalists out to terrorize women in America, the American Taliban who are pushing anti-women’s freedom propaganda or trying to get Taliban-kissing legislation passed. Oh, wait, what do I hear…crickets. Therefore, what these Republicans and American Taliban religious totalitarians/authoritarians are really doing is amping up the fear among anyone stupid enough to listen to them, hyping a threat that doesn’t exist in America, or at least doesn’t exist yet unless the hardcore right-wing lying deceitful American Taliban get their way.

It’s a matter of human evolution. The most important aspect of human evolution boils down to the ability to manage ones emotions, most importantly, fear. Social conservatives are simply less evolved and therefore filled with irrational fear. Scienece supports my contention. See recent studies on the the enlarged amygdala (reptile brain) found within the craniums of social conservatives. We know that modern man cross-bred to some degree with neanderthals and this is likely the result. Conservatives.
Its partly why they choose to disbelieve the theory of evolution and science in general, supplanting it with a bunch of fairy tails for which their is no evidence whatsoever.
I am not being facetious. There is a valid explanation for everything (and it isn’t magic Sky Grampas or talking snakes) and the phenomenon of social conservatism demands one.
