WASHINGTON — The United States gave Egypt $150 million in crucial economic assistance on Thursday to help the key US ally transition towards democracy following the overthrow of longtime president Hosni Mubarak.

“I am pleased to announce today that we will be reprogramming $150 million for Egypt to put ourselves in a position to support the transition there and assist with their economic recovery,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.

The chief US diplomat added that William Burns, the undersecretary of state for political affairs, and David Lipton, a senior White House adviser on international economics, would travel to Egypt next week.

The pair will “consult with Egyptian counterparts on how we can most effectively deploy our assistance in line with their priorities,” Clinton told reporters after a closed-door briefing with senators about Middle East unrest.

“We also discussed the lessons of the recent events in Egypt and the broader Middle East,” she said.

“These events demonstrate why the United States must remain fully engaged around the world,” she said, before repeating her warning that planned Republican cuts in foreign aid would harm US national security.

How are tear-gas cannisters going to help?

Some of you guys are either none to smart..or you don’t have a clue who really “owns” the the U.S. Government and our military (which is spread a little thin these days) and why other countries hate us..the U.S. gave Egypt a 150 million dollars as a down payment..making sure Egypt keeps the Suez Canal open (for Oil Companies) and to not blow up the pipeline that sucks Egypts natural gas out of Egypt, and deposits it in Israel

We become more passive to this corporate government takeover each and every day.

We hear the politicians railing about unions and welfare cheats…..the real theft is happening not because of unions, and public services, it is happening because there is no oversight at all in any level of government. The government contracts involved in “The War on Terror”. “The War on Drugs” , down to the most basic office supplies are being rigged, and so is our foreign policy…they are like magicians pulling millions from their ass and distributing it like tips at a Bar. That these politicos can keep a straight face amazes me .

Please please donate to Hillary so that she can retire her campaign debts.

You don’t get it..do you…? The Corporate owned and operated U.S. Government doesn’t give a rats ass about the American people..their only intersts is more profit for themselves (and of course figuring out how to fool/make the American people to pay for their taxes and give them subsidies, with out causing a revolt of some kind..Governing is “hard work”..you have to hide the truth, and keep people in the dark..and fighting amongst themselves about wedge issues, who is really evil, which God is bigger, who is more corrupt…Dem’s or Repubs…etc., while they steal and suppress… and of course remembering to always smile (and not get caught) getting caught in a lie..?hey no biggie lie your way out of it or just pretend that the people are stupid, you know about things better than they do, and that’s not what you REALLY what you meant to say..anyway

So that 1.3 BILLION a year for 30 years, which has been frozen in Switzerland, hopefully it will happen everywhere, where the FUCK is all that scratch? And why the FUCK are we obligated to cough up $$$$ we don’t have??? WTF???? Where is this $$$$ coming from, my mother’s Social Security??? I don’t fucking think so!!!!
You asshole going to take her Medicare away, that she paid into for 35 years???? Try it bitches.
This is MY mother, she paid for HER insurance, why do WE always have to cough up the cash. Let someone else pick up the check for once. We can’t be the world’s bitch anymore. I’m sorry we can’t keep handed out cash to countries while we are involved in 2 wars and the middle of a depression. It’s not our parents fault W waged an illegal war, why are they having to pay for it w/ Social Security?
This is just insane. When will we learn?

When did i ever state i dont get it? This is the problem with text-based sarcasm… too many people like you over analyze the comment… While you sit here as a keyboard cowboy lecturing me on “what i don’t get” try going outside and doing something to change the status-quo. My satirical statement was nothing more than an attempt to paint a picture that America, like it has in the past, is supporting revolution and ignoring its own. When is it our turn?

If you can answer that without sounding like schmuck i’ll be there with you every step of the way

Translation, since Hillary speaks in Excrement not plain and honest English:

“The USA has paid Egypt’s military $150 million or your tax dollars to turn away the Iranian military training ships from passage through the Suez Canal.”

WTF. We just eliminated the Institute for Peace because it cost us 42 million a year, but have 150 million to pull out of our ass and hand out like candy to a bunch of fucking Egyptians to “smooth their transition”??

From the comments here, a number of people don’t seem to understand the nature of “broke” within the present system.
First, the whole system’s built around DEBT. In essence, EVERYONE’S broke, (though you might not know it yet); but this doesn’t stop the system from traveling on… from ever going into deeper debt; because the principle purpose of the debt is social control. It’s the ultimate form of slavery.
So the government, (controlled by the big banks) doesn’t care if it keeps going into debt, because YOU (and your descendants) will be the ones to keep paying it back, forever.
Second, because the American people (today) have the attention span of lemmings, (as Stephen Colbert so astutely pointed out) the government is counting on us forgetting that they bailed out (and continue to bail out) the banks to the tune of TRILLIONS, so that we don’t even ask for lube when they tell us to bend over and take it up the tailpipe in the form of “cuts” (to cut the deficit).
Now, reasonable/rational people may be forgiven for scratchin their heads thinkin, “How can they/we afford this ‘aid’?” But you have to keep in mind that the system is FRAUDULENT. It doesn’t work in a straightforward way. The reason the government can invent money of out thin air (like trillions for the banks, or $150 million for the Egyption military) is because Amerika Inc. (after a century of industrial dominance) has been able to force governments around the world to use the $U.S. as their reserve currency, (80% of all global transactions). This is what keeps the uber-inflated (worthless) dollar from crashing.
All this, of course, is backed up by some 300 U.S. military bases around the world… paid for with (you guessed it) “worthless” dollars.
Finally, it’s important for us not to get caught in the phony “AID” acronym, for the American government NEVER gives “aid” without wanting something in return; and 99.9% of the aid goes into the pockets of the torture-networks, police, and/or manipulation mechanisms, (such as “The National Endowment for Democracy,” a CIA front). In truth, we, (as the ultimate custodians of our government) OWE the rest of the world MASSIVELY.
Given that our government has been stealing from us as well, this thought might not initially wash over very well; but just think of it this way: we take our government back, throw the bankers in jail, cancel the debt; and, from the naturally-enormous abundance of wealth we produce, we can easily afford to take ten percent and help people around the world recover from ‘our’ corporate pillage.
People being the basically decent creatures they are, they’ll just be glad ‘we’ cease exploiting them; and the extra help will go a long way to helping everyone heal and move forward.
But first: throw the banksters at the federal Reserve in jail!!

hey U.S. goverment I will start a ruckus in any country you would like one. oh! by the way you can deposit the
150 mill in my bank account in the cayman islands.

  • Anonymous

I’m going to work extra hard tomorrow so the fruits of that labor will be extra special for our federal government to help with the transition. Maybe I will work some overtime this weekend, to have more taxes to pay, just to do my “fair share” in working really hard at work for the transition.

If you’re willing to cause a ruckus in any country the USA wants, that only pays 150k a year via Blackwater. Must be willing to murder and rape innocents women and children.

  • D.Crockett

how the hell did you perceive your comment to my post I was reflecting the ease of a country to pay 150 mill
to another country when said country is broke and the fact they are willing to hand the money out so easy.
they might as well give it to me.

Makes me wonder if a revolution in Iraq could have happened if Saddam was still there, if the US didn’t go to war over those WMDs.

Good news to me.. I plan on moving over there ASAP.

You guys can pay for my freedoms!

    Oh Henry,
Your country has destroyed Egypt by supporting the criminla who was overthrown hiloe your father and probably all your family were cheering him on. It s time to reap what you sawed as a nation.

    Take your tears somewhere else.

You ignorant moron it is all about your beloved Israel. All is bribery to keep people like Husni freindly to the shitthy little state. All the money goes as military support where American advisors take about 30% then military contractors take the rest along with your man Hosni.

Say DK, are you OK then with more than 10 billion a year of your tax money going to the shitty little state?

  • Anonymous

There is no money because we are “broke” according to the house of rep speaker, Boehner…So there is no money for teachers in Wisconsin but we can give away presents around the globe , hahaha!!! is a joke right?

  • Anonymous

Ditto…and add the aid to Afhganistan,Pakistan which hates us, Irak that told us yesterday that we owe them millions for the destruction of their capital!!! please!!! our defense budget is 4.3%GDP Chinas is 2.8%GDP and ours is 15 time bigger than China. DOD is cutting 78bn and their budget will still increase despite the cuts. Why in the name of Jesus are we spending like is a holiday? Is insane…our foreign aid is out of control. I think that is where they need to start and i’m afraid everybody sees that and when our government starts cutting deeper a lot of protest are going to happen because people will begin to see the injustice of having to sacrifice when all our money is going to countries that hate us.

  • Anonymous

The democrats create massive spending with big social programs and republicans pretend to cut but send the saved money out of the country to run their little wars and also corporate welfare and rich welfare programs. 50 years of this is how we got here. We public need to do what Wisconsin people are doing and take them head on. Keep the money here in US, stop sending billions overseas…tax the rich that send its money to global corporations that employ people overseas and keep the poor here. Reduce DOD budget!!!! there is no reason why ours is 4.3%GDP and 15 times higher than China. We have bases in over 180 countries around the world.

  • maritimer

Why are they running these IFCJ ads here? Good grief. Israel, it’s not all about you.

  • maritimer

    Tantawi and friends. Who else?

  • maritimer

Look, people. Any money sent to Egypt under the guise of “assistance” will go to the ruling junta. The Army is in charge and many members of the Mubarak cabinet are still there. Egypt is entrenched in a system of patronage and corruption with roots that run deep. The money will come with strings attached- Put so-and-so up for election in the shabby mock elections to come. I hope for the best but I fear for the worst for Egypt. They (the people) must keep up the fight, they must organize, and dig in for the long haul because they are nowhere near democracy at this point. I hope they have the strength to do it. The US will do its best behind the scenes to install select candidates (if there are any elections) and all in the name of that shitty word “stability.”

  • Anonymous

you will have to excuse me, I was under the impression that we were in a financial crisis here in the United States and that we are taking money away from our old people and children just to be able to give it to some unknown entity in Egypt.

I don’t understand why we are not sending them a few more F-16s to make them feel better

  • Anonymous

That’s right Hilary. Cut home heating assistance to America’s poor but give 150,000,000 to Egypt. Is the Obama Administration insane?

  • Anonymous

As someone in Egypt who survived through the uprising let me say, please, keep your money America. You obviously aren’t doing any good by continuing your screwed up foreign policy of policing the world, supplying dictators with weapons and then sitting back astonished when it blows up in your face. The sooner you back off the better, and don’t think we don’t know you’re meddling already in the factions and opposition groups, have you no shame?

  • Anonymous

Ok First: refer upwards to my comment i left for Chabuka. This is why i dont leave comments on rawstory because there are always one or two people who want to over-analyze it. Second, please dont refer to my family. Third, You just found out about Egypt 3 weeks ago and since then have been on a personal crusade to point out to everyone in America that we “reap what you sawed”. Fourth, its “reap what you sow” – if you’re going to put overused quotes from the bible in your assaults at least spell it right.

The U.S. Government has spent 30 years bribing the maniacal Mubarak. Now, before Egypt even has a viable, working Government the U.S. are out trying to buy the next one. The Media has been reporting that the Military is in control at this moment, so does that mean that the current head of the military will receive the $M150.00? The whole exercise is nothing more than the U.S. buying a new puppet government. Will the U.S. continue its usual responses to a government it funds..that is to turn a blind eye when the new ‘leader’ decides that he does not want ANY opposition so just orders the wholesale slaughter of people? short answer: Of course they will and to expedite that end they will supply training and ‘advisers’ as they have been doing since teh early 1950′s.

    Let me get this straight……….
Here in America we have people protesting about the Dictocracy we live under.
We have crooked Politicians that have been in power for thirty years or more, (they just move around the musical chairs to make it look good)
We have high unemployment, poverty, homelessness, to name a few.
But Billary finds it in her heart that it’s okay to bodyslam and assault a 71 year old army veteran and a CIA “Ray McGovern” whistleblower for protesting our foreign policy, but she’ll wire a 150 million dollar check to another group of protesters half a world away.
America is a God Damn Joke…………………

  • Johnny Warbucks

Yeap. More payola to ensure that Egypt continues being a quasi-colony of the US and to ensure that, no matter what, they play nice with our boss, Israel. If the Egyptians value their revolution, they would take the entire 150 million and shove it up Obomber’s ass. Taking that blood money is selling their soul to the devil. They will never be free.

  • Johnny Warbucks

That 150 mil ain’t going to the protesters. That’s going to Mubarak’s Poodle who’s in charge of the show now. She wants him to play nice with her bosses next door. Peace is the ME is bought not achieved.

  • Johnny Warbucks

Yep. That’s exactly what it means. They’re buying themselves the next dictator of Egypt. The Egyptian’s nickname for the guy is “Mubarak’s Poodle” what does that tell you, huh?

  • Johnny Warbucks

If you participated in it, you should broadcast this far and wide. Let everybody know that the US is trying to buy Mubarak’s Poodle and hijack your revolution. You did something beautiful, you won your freedom, you’ve come too far to let these bastards steal it all away to hand you over back to the Zionists as a birthday present. You know how to stand up for your rights.

  • Johnny Warbucks

The Republicans don’t even pretend to cut. They just go straight for the working class’ jugular and that’s not cutting, that’s ripping out.

  • Johnny Warbucks

They’re protesting in Iraq too. In fact, I read somewhere that either they kicked or wanted to kick the government of an entire province. They’re killing those poor people for protesting now. The irony is entirely too painful to bear. After everything they’ve done to them. The bastards that did that to them deserve to have their hearts ripped out of their chests. And the pump for Cheney.

  • Johnny Warbucks

Hey, your beloved Israel is still getting 3+ Billion a year plus all the hardware they shriveled up little Zionist hearts desire. Are you saying we have no money for them either?
