UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The United States on Friday vetoed a draft U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements on Palestinian territory after the Palestinians refused to withdraw the Arab-drafted text.

The other 14 council members voted in favor of the draft resolution. But the United States, as one of the five permanent council members with the power to block any action by the Security Council, voted against it and struck it down.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice told council members that the veto “should not be misunderstood to mean we support settlement activity.” She added that the U.S. view is that Israeli settlements lack legitimacy.

But she said the draft “risks hardening the position of both sides” and reiterated the U.S. position that settlements and other contentious issues should be resolved in direct peace negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians.

British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant, speaking on behalf of Britain, France and Germany, condemned Israeli settlements in the West Bank. “They are illegal under international law,” he said.

He added that the European Union’s three biggest nations hope that an independent state of Palestine will join the United Nations as a new member state by September 2011.

The Palestinian Authority earlier on Friday decided to insist that the resolution be put to the council, and rejected an offer from the United States of a council statement containing weaker language on settlements.

Since 2000, 14 Security Council resolutions have been vetoed by one or more of the five permanent members — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.

Of those, 10 were U.S. vetoes, nine of them related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The last U.S. vetoes were two in 2006, both related to Israel.

Can we blame republicans for this? Oh wait democrats and repubs are the exact same people wearing a different color

  • Anonymous

Ha ha ha! Did you expect any different? We’ll be passing Israel another $6 billion of our tax dollars for this year soon. They really seem to own our politicians, eh?

  • Anonymous

Not a real surprise, blaming the other side for one’s own inaction. The u.s. does not really want to do anything that would upset the israelis.

  • Johnny Warbucks

This is absolutely sickening. What a freaking joke! The US learns absolutely nothing. Nothing! By blindly siding with Israel’s wrongdoing, they continue to show their hypocrisy and slap on the face the Arab nations they so much want to control. I just read over at Ha’aretz that the illegal settlements have doubled since the freeze expired. Much like the ones over here, the ones over there figure that, by the time it’s all said and done, there won’t be any land left in Palestine. That’ll be one way to take care of the problem, I’d say.

And, oh, yeah. Prepare for the attack of the cyber Zionist drones now. All those with 10 personas each calling anybody who dares criticize precious Israel an anti-semite™

  • Johnny Warbucks

    Yallah, yallah, Obama!

Don’t you like the comment by Susan Rice after veteoing the bill condeming illegal settlement activity.

“U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice told council members that the veto “should not be misunderstood to mean we support settlement activity.”

Instead it should be understood that Obama is a coward.

  • CozmicSeer

Seems to show who is really in control of the US government. Makes you wonder what the Israelis have on those in charge(or how much money in involved). Also explains why, even though the budget axes are coming down on a lot of programs for the people of this country, they still plan to give Israel 3.1 billion in foreign aid(part of Obama’s obscene spending for this next year). That’s one item I’d like to see removed permanently.

These actions by our government are going to come back and bite us in our posteriors. Maybe sooner than we’re ready for. And it ain’t going to be pretty.

Another humiliation for the US. Guess that’s what comes of being a client state of Israel. Oh well, lets just go borrow another three or four BILLION dollars from China, and give it to Israel, with no strings attached.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

    That we knew.

    Note the avatar my friend.

PS: This: “But she said the draft “risks hardening the position of both sides” and reiterated the U.S. position that settlements and other contentious issues should be resolved in direct peace negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians.” is bulls#it. Period.

The Israeli government does not want peace. Israel has always wanted to keep the status quo: No Palestinian state and no formal peace agreement. It’s against their short and long-term interests. It’s as simple and factual and clear as that.

To prove my point, in their own words:

In an October 6, 2004, interview with Haaretz, Dov Weissglas, Ariel Sharon’s chief of staff, declared: “The significance of the (Gaza Strip) disengagement plan is the freezing of the peace process… When you freeze that process, you prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state and you prevent a discussion on the refugees, the borders and Jerusalem. Disengagement supplies the amount of formaldehyde that is necessary so there will not be a political process with the Palestinians.

    “prevent a Palestinian state”

    “no political process”

    “prevent a discussion”

Obama, like others before him, is paying nothing but lip service, as usual, to those who want real and lasting peace.

I said when that phony headline appeared here about the U.S. supporting the “non binding” resolution, that Obama wouldn’t condemn Israel if they bombed Iran.

I should have said he wouldn’t condemn Israel if they bombed California.

He proved me right once again. This is so easy.

The settlements are illegal under international law and everyone knows it. If the West Bank is occupied territory, Israel cannot build settlements there. If it’s part of Israel, then the West Bank inhabitants should be allowed to vote in Israeli elections. Israel wants land more than it wants peace and has for the last 40 years. I don’t think we’re doing Israel any favors by encouraging this illegality, but we’re sure not helping our own standing in the world.

Jesus Effing Christ! Susan.. I have no idea of your age, but I do see that you are about as brilliant as the rest of the “New Millenium Americans” which, apparently, puts you on the same level as an eleven year old student in Europe and the rest of the REAL world.

It looks to me, and the majority of the rest of the world, that there is still no dictator that is too shitty for you americans to support as long as you get something from it… Bases, lower cost oil, places for your doofus religious fundies to evangalize and cause trouble. Nothing out of ordinary mind you.. Nothing that you haven’t done to you own people and to other nations ever since you became an independent country. First it was the Blacks, then the Indians. Then you started on other Nations that you coveted for your empire, Cuba, Spain, Hawaii, Japan, China, God Damn! The drum beats louder and faster in your Fascist Dance to provide your own private brand of Freedom from the barrel of a gun… No Thanks, I am so Fucking lucky that I managed to gain French Nationality. Your Government really sucks…. And has for Scores of years.. You lie, pervet the news and the facts and continue down the road strewing your bile and crap for all to see and for you to not clean up a thing…. I am to the fucking point where I despise what you stand for today. You allow the God Damned Israelis to run you like a two bit street whore and they laugh at you while the are taking your money and bending you over fucking you in the ass…. You make me sick!!! Enjoy your good times with your Israeli Pigs… Karma is going to be a real mother fucker when it comes home to roost……

    Just this old Chief’s 2 cents….

It’s time people stopped tip toeing around the subject of Isreal and it’s illegal, immoral, inhuman action against others for fear of being unfairly labeled “anti-semetic” by those uneducated enough to use it without actually know what it means.

No, we can’t condemn Israel for anything. If we do we are anti-Semitic. So bottom line, let Israel terrorize the Palestinians and murder women and children.

Very well expressed, sir and every one of us Americans should feel like an utter “fool”, “chump”, and should all be looking behind us to see if our un patriotic (acting) a sses is still there after that “ass chewing”. I know we don´t have a whole heck of a lot of time to start “moving”, but this i can tell you, when the Americans have REALLY had enough, all this is going to change VERY QUICKLY. You think that ME ruckus is off the rack? We WILL have JUSTICE in all it´s constitutional forms OR WE will have nothing, not the rich, not the poor, not the corporations…NO ONE IS GOING TO HAVE NOTHING! Nothing will stop the tide of anger of Americans. That you can take to the bank!

The conflation of criticism of Israeli policies with Anti-Semitism is totally FALSE. It needs to be attacked relentlessly as an obvious propaganda tool and a monstrous LIE used for decades to silence and discredit anyone who dares speak the truth.

The Star of David, Israel’s flag, is on the backside of every American dollar bill which may account for the apparent subservience of America to Israel’s Zionist agenda. America has been humiliated for it’s duplicity before the entire world which will only hasten the day of America’s diminishing influence everywhere.

    http://www.jordanmaxwell.com/articles/questions/images/star-of-david-3.jpg

The only time Israel liked the UN was when the International Community re-created Israel within a defined territory. Since then, Israel has given the International community the finger and with this veto America has too. The following image gives you some idea how far Israel has expanded beyond the Land assigned it for a Jewish homeland in 1947.

    http://whatreallyhappened.com/

At the time of Jesus 2000 years ago, Israel had not existed for 1000 years. The area was known as Judea and Samara in the Roman Province of Palestine in the world of that time. The Jews dispersed throughout the world after the Romans destroyed the Temple at Jerusalem. Israel is a re-creation of the Bible.

President Obama is the 1st President to have the fortitude to call Israel out for consistently violating UN resolutions. They hate him already. To expand existing “settlements” and build new ones on the very land that is the subject of “Peace” negotiations is not a Peace or Trust builder, but brings the world closer to the fulfillment of this 2000 year old prophecy,

And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
    Revelation 16

Armageddon is derived from Har Mediggo which was located in the Roman Province of Palestine when The Revelation of Jesus Christ was given 2000 years ago. Today, Har Mediggo/Armageddon is located in the Occupied territories.

This revelation was given 600 years before Islam appeared in the world as the third ritual, traditional, man made religion to the God of Abraham.

The three unclean spirits, devils and false prophet are active in the three religions to the God of Abraham, that by the design of the author of History, all meet in Jerusalem Today, where Christ was crucified.

We are seeing History unfold before our very eyes as most of the people of earth stand on the sidelines. I’ve often envisioned the TV news networks broadcast the incoming missiles as if in a trance, and then suddenly sign off.

They have so much power to educate the people to prevent it from happening before the fact. The way it is, the media has to cater to the desire of the masses to escape in amusement and entertainment instead of facing realities that could blow us all away. Like the story of Jonah in the whale, people are trying to escape from doing what must be done. I read the story as a Spiritual Allegory. I do not think he was actually swallowed by a whale as many do.

Looks like it’s time to restructure the U.N. Security Counsel and make it a fully democratic body instead of this bullshit that a 6% stake can shut it all down. Pretending that any one nation “knows more than everyone else” is absurd and allows for all kinds of corruption.

Make it a 2/3s (hell, a 4/5s even) override of a veto or something. No ONE nation should be dictating to ALL OTHER nations what they can or can’t do. Sometimes other people utilizing their rights is uncomfortable for you; too fucking bad.. suck it up, buttercup.

  • http://ray032.com/ Ray Joseph Cormier

I have often thought the same thing. All 5 permanent members of the Security Council having veto powers have nuclear weapons, and three of them are supposed to be Democracies, enshrining the principle of 1 person 1 vote.

It’s like no matter how the majority of people feel or vote for whichever political party, the Corporations and the rich always stay on top having veto power.

Just picture most of US’s elected officials like this ; They get f**ked in the ass by a giant Zionist d**do (without lubricant)screaming AAH..AAAI….AAIPAC . AAAAIIPAAAC.
US leaders are Israel’s b*tch and most of them even like it

  • http://ray032.com/ Ray Joseph Cormier

To my dismay, searching The New York Times and The Washington Post Today, this important story that will bring America into even greater disrepute, hastening the day of it’s diminished moral influence in the world, is not even mentioned. If I missed it, will someone post the link in reply?

And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,
And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.
    Revelation 16

Isn’t the fact of the Presidential limousine being called “the beast” an aptly named symbol?
