SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – The US National Security Agency (NSA) chief on Thursday urged top computer security specialists to harden the nation’s critical infrastructure against inevitable destructive cyber attacks.

“This is an important time,” NSA and Cyber Command director Gen. Keith Alexander said during a presentation at a premier RSA Conference in San Francisco.

“Most of the destructive tools being developed haven’t been used; we need to use this window of opportunity to develop defenses.”

Two days earlier, Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn gave a similar warning, saying the capability clearly exists for malicious software to cause real-world damage at power plants, water supplies and other vital points.

“Few weapons in the history of warfare, once created, have gone unused,” Lynn said during a speech at RSA.

“It is possible to imagine attacks on military networks or critical infrastructure-like our transportation system and energy sector-that cause severe economic damage, physical destruction, or even loss of life.”

Last month, Russia called on NATO to track down the culprits behind a Stuxnet computer worm that targeted a Russian-built Iranian nuclear power plant, saying the incident could have triggered a new Chernobyl.

Secure military networks will matter little if power grid cuts or other government systems are disabled by cyber attacks, according to Lynn.

He called for extending military computer defenses to privately held parts of the infrastructure key to the nation functioning.

“During a natural disaster, like a hurricane, military troops and helicopters are often used by FEMA to help deliver relief,” Lynn said.

“In a similar vein, the military’s cyber capabilities will be available to civilian leaders to help protect the networks that support government operations and critical infrastructure.”

Private operations that the government wants to guard include companies that supply defense department equipment, according to Alexander.

He argued that the military network’s “secure zone” needed to be extended to all critical resources in partnerships with the private sector.

Alexander maintained that national security agents and the computer wizards running company networks could work together without infringing on people’s rights.

“I believe we have the talent to build cyber security that protects our civil liberties and privacy,” he said. “We can and must do both.”

Alexander added that the nation’s security depended on the education of coming generations as well as today’s software and hardware innovations.

“Our nation needs to push science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Alexander said. “It is absolutely vital to our future.”

As in past years at the annual RSA gathering, US defense officials called on computer security specialists to help them keep the nation safe.

“Securing our nation’s networks is a team sport,” Alexander said. “We need your help.”

How does he know they are inevitable unless he’s the one planning them?

  • Johnny Warbucks

“US must prepare for cyber attacks” as defined herein shall be construed as a warning that the USG will launch a false flag cyber attack at some point (soon) and use that as an excuse to pull the plug on the internet. Remember: you heard it hear first.

Obama’s people come at the Constitution every single day now.

If anything it’s the govt., highest ranks in armed forces, large corporation executive boards and “security” firms that are the biggest threat to our freedom… at least judging on the recent HBGary leaks, etc.

I wonder if Anonymous and Wikileaks has made certain powerful and wealthy people nervous?

If there’s a cyber attack on the U.S. it will come from Washington DC area by either the FBI, the Pentagon or the CIA in Langley VA.

Hey U.S. Government! We don’t believe your lies anymore!

The American people need protection against attacks by the US military. This is not a snark.

  • ghostof911

Spot on. Define the solution (the wiping out of free speech), and then create a problem (a perceived threat) that can be used to implement the solution.

“Last month, Russia called on NATO to track down the culprits behind a Stuxnet computer worm that targeted a Russian-built Iranian nuclear power plant, saying the incident could have triggered a new Chernobyl.”

This is to be read with a grain of salt. The Russian elites have far more in common with the other global elites than they do with the Russian people. During the two weeks of disturbances in Egypt, there were NO stories that appeared in Pravda. The Russian elites do not want their people to get any ideas about transparent government. The Russian elites want to maintain a tight clamp on potential dissent as much as the elites in the US do.

  • ghostof911

The perps are aware that the noose is tightening around their necks. The government’s anthrax story has become a standing joke, and evidence of government involvent in the WTC detonations is becoming overwhelming. The expected government response to all this is a flurry of repressive measures, such as this bogus “cyber attack” threat.

ae911truth.org–1,440 verified architectural and engineering professionals have signed the petition demanding of Congress a truly independent investigation.

A peer-reviewed paper published in the *Open Chemical Physics Journal* on April 3, 2009 reported that a little known high-tech explosive called nano-thermite was found throughout the World Trade Center dust.

According to a June 2009 statement by Britain’s prestigious Institute of Nanotechnology, the Harrit study “provides indisputable evidence that a highly engineered explosive called nano-thermite was found in the dust of all three buildings that came down on 9/11 2001 in New York city. This advanced explosive incorporating nanotechnology is only available to sophisticated military labs.”

  • Johnny Warbucks

9/11 worked out so well, they’re carrying it to every area they want to attack and suppress now. Not very transparent, really.

That little stunt was pulled by Israel. They confessed to it. I read a news article on it but didn’t save a link and, now, I can’t remember whether it was on Ha’aretz or PressTV. They were actually bragging about it.

You know what’s interesting, I took a stroll by cubadebate, the official Cuban propaganda website (the only one) to see what they had to say on the ruckus and they’re covering selectively. Since the Castros have been in bed with Qadafi there wasn’t one mention of Libya in there. I thought that was quite telling. Also, I found a hidden speech by Raul in which he made a reference to being aware of the youth unrest. I couldn’t believe my eyes with that one. They almost sound like a democracy, at least, no worse than the US. Ha ha!

And, btw, the elite is all one, worldwide. They’re all the same everywhere. They just seem to recycle themselves via their offspring and move from one country to the next. Thanks to globalization, today, they’re all connected. If you notice the techniques they’re using for fighting the protesters, they’re all the same, whether in the ME or Europe or Israel.

  • ghostof911

Their guilty consciences never give them a break.

  • ghostof911

“the techniques they’re using for fighting the protesters, they’re all the same, whether in the ME or Europe or Israel.”

Well, when the dogs are let loose here at home, the good news is there won’t be any surprises.

Thanks for the tip about cubadebate. I’m okay reading spanish, so I’m good there. One that you might want to check out from time to time is El Tiempo from Bogotá. For a rightwing country, the major paper there is remarkably liberal.

  • Johnny Warbucks

I keep repeating that so that people take notice but you know how that goes. Actually, they’re all being trained by Israel. They have law exchange programs where they send cops from here to Israel to practice ‘crowd control’ on the Palestinians. We, taxpayers, pick up the bill. Nice, eh?

If you ever wanna find anything over there, let me know, I’m familiar with it. You need to know how to navigate the maze of propaganda and every once in a while, you get lucky and find the hidden gems such as the one I mentioned above in Raul’s speech. It was a one liner but it was very telling.

  • ghostof911

Sounds a lot like Fox News. Almost all propaganda, but with the rare gems like this one.

    Caution — spew alert.

  • Johnny Warbucks

Communist propaganda is the worst. It’s very rudimentary which is the reason why I can’t understand what kind of morons are these pseudo-Communists I find myself around here and other sites all the time that they would fall for something as obvious as the shit they put out. Fidel is a broken record. All he does is denounce imperialism and accuse them of the same things he’s guilty of. Quite pathetic actually. While the whole time, dying, I mean dying to jump into their pockets and become that which he denounces and claims to fight. They’re all the same! Whether on one side or the other, same shit different name. If you have to live under that shit for any length of time, you learn to tune it out and you know immediately when they’re lying because they keep repeating the same key words.

  • ghostof911

Having become politically aware during the early Bush years, my propaganda radar is fairly well tuned, regardless of what flavor of propaganda that’s being dished out. I agree that basically it’s all the same. They only differ in their outer labels and wrappings,

The one thing about propaganda though, it’s BORING. After hearing the same words for the umpteenth time, you sort of lost interest.

  • Johnny Warbucks

Yep. You got it. It’s all the same shit, different lingo. See, what I can’t understand is why you would get that but these wanna be Commies can’t see it and let themselves be blinded by the light. What idiots!

As I was looking to cubadebate, I found an article supposedly detailing the outcome of the case at the psychiatric hospital where 40-some people died of hypothermia a couple of years ago. It was the sentencing of the ones they nabbed (who, most likely, really had nothing to do with it but were the fall guys for the higher ups that were guilty). The article goes on for like 3 pages describing the outstanding job of the prosecutors (I swear, I think they even described what type underwear they were wearing) plus another 2 pages to praise the marvelous healthcare system, their pride and joy (which allowed 40+ people to die of hypothermia in a tropical island where the average temp in the winter is in the 70s). Then at the end of all that shit, there was one tiny paragraph, like 3 lines, telling you that the defendants had a team of lawyers and then the sentence they got. I laughed myself stupid for 1/2 hour. And that is typical. I can’t believe how anyone in their right mind couldn’t possibly see thru that shit.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

I thought it was already settled that Israel and the US created Stuxnet.

“Most of the destructive tools being developed haven’t been used; we need to use this window of opportunity to develop defenses.”

In light of this revelation I have replaced the liquid coolant cooling my processor with my precious bodily fluids to thwart any future attack by any future enemy in the future. Of course I hope that no time traveler from the future changes the past, because then I may have removed my precious bodily fluids instead thus giving the future, future enemies a leg up.

NSA – US must prepare for cyber attacks because we got plans.

  • ghostof911

Damn! Russian intelligence ought to start reading the NYT to keep up with what’s going on.

Seriously, I wear my propaganda chemical suit when I read the NYT, but it sounds like Russia is using Stuxnet as its OBL as a pretext for cutting down on whatever free speech there might be in the country.

“Last month, Russia called on NATO to track down the culprits behind a Stuxnet computer worm that targeted a Russian-built Iranian nuclear power plant, saying the incident could have triggered a new Chernobyl.”

  • ghostof911

What a crock, hypothermia on a tropical island. Those who wrote that were probably also laughing themselves stupid, knowing that no matter how ridiculous was their report, they would still get away with it.

I didn’t follow this at the time, but having just read this report on the Raygun assassination report, it’s the same thing. A complete crock of shit, and yet it’s what passes as the truth.

The incident was truly horrific, like images out of a Nazi gas chamber. Here are some links, including the one I mentioned above. It will make you laugh if you can follow the ‘logic’ employed.

In other words, since Obama met with Steve Jobs and Zuckerberg yesterday, be prepared for a false flag 911-style cyber event. It will be orchestrated from within and blamed on whatever group they want to demonize next and install total government control over the internet.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/RepublicConstitution?feature=mhum TruthRegimes

It is and it was settled day one of the reports. Everyone knew the only nations capable of that level of attack and has the motive: U.S., Israel, and Great Britain.

Gee whiz ollie, yea think we might get hit with cyber attacks? Considering CHINA has armies of hackers trying to break through every day? tens of thousands of times a day?
Ya’ think so Ollie, ya’ think?

  • ghostof911

Unbelievable. It is a story from the Nazi concentration camp era. It should be an open and shut case of crimes against humanity.

  • Johnny Warbucks

Was that not horrific? You have no idea how they’ve tried to cover that. Eventually, they pinned it on a bunch of woofballs & threw them in jail and continue doing more of the same.

So you understand that’s pretty much the wonderful healthcare system the Cuban people are exposed to – of course, not to that extreme per se – but it’s the same basic system that caused that horror. Michael Moore was punked so bad and he has, in turned, hurt Cubans so much with his unintended mis/disinformation campaign. Still, you will find an entire fraction of the Amerikan population (many right here on RS) defending that shit, fighting with me, attacking me, stalking me because they don’t want to see things like that. Delusion and denial are wonderful things indeed.

  • jsixis

Why don’t you take 75% of that NSA funding your getting to SPY on US and get your computers secured?

When in danger, or in doubt, run in circles, scream, and shout.

There’s always a reason to be afraid. Too much money depends on it. That doesn’t mean there’s no risk, but I’m not sure I’d take the NSA’s word for it.

USA is following closely on how to cut off communications to disrupt any sort of rallies or gatherings. Obama is just a brown colored Netanyahu, Hillary is Tzipi Livni. Both – along with the entire GOP and large portion of the Dems are traitors to this country, because they serve the interest of Israel by always deciding what is good or bad for Israel, and THEN secondly (after the first one was evulated) they may consider what is good for USA, but that’s not as important. Here is what to do. Make sure you have a CB radio if you ever plan to attend any rallies. You can get them in Walmart for like 30 bucks. Have one handy with fresh batteries ready. They can’t cut off all radio frequencies, even if they cut the internet and the cell towers.
