SAO PAULO – The amount of the world’s farmland given over to genetically modified (GM) crops grew 10% last year, with the United States remaining the biggest zone for the altered produce, according to a study released in Brazil Tuesday.

A total of 148 million hectares (366 million acres) are now given over to GM plantations in 29 countries, handled by 15 million farmers, according to the report by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA).

The United States accounts for nearly half that area, 67 million hectares, growing modified soya, maiz, cotton, rapeseed, squash, papaya, alfafa and beetroot.

Brazil was the second-biggest GM producer with 25 million hectares, much of it growing soya, maiz and cotton.

Anderson Galvao, representing the ISAAA in Brazil, said the Latin American nation was taking on GM crops so rapidly that it has doubled grain production in the past two decades.

Defenders of GM crops stress that they are more resistant to disease and insects, and are more productive.

Detractors fear the new varieties will supplant non-GM vegetation, with unknown long-term consequences for the food chain and environment.

Kill the frankenfoods before they take over the globe. They are deadly to native species.

The story behind the story is how much of an increase in Roundup usage does this increase in GM crops signify.

For a refresher course in Monsanto you can watch all 1 hour and 49 minutes of a dramatic documentary, “The World According to Monsanto!” Using Roundup on all GM crops is a “sustainable system, so give it a try!”

    Oh yeah!!!!

Unlike cross-bred hybrids, which far too many people confuse with genetically modified species, GM plants can’t ever be contained once released into nature. Plants can be designed to produce toxins, pharmaceuticals, etc. The possibilities for terrorism must seem tempting for those so inclined. Or what if the world of bacteria was tampered with, and a deadly form of a very common bacteria was created and introduced into the environment. Where would this world be then?

This is sheer, utter madness on a global scale. Monsanto is the most evil nazi corporation on the planet and their GMO seeds sicken people, insects, animals, and the planet. Rats fed GM soy develop tumors and reproductive disorders including sterility. This is a eugenics program folks… these poisonous frankenfoods MUST be stopped lest we go the way of the dinosaurs.

Genetic Engineering: Scientists warn of link between dangerous new pathogen and Monsanto’s Roundup. Urges USDA to rescind approval of genetically engineered alfalfa: “In layman’s terms, it should be treated as an emergency.”

That’s why you shouldn’t shop at the grocery store, you should shop at: your balcony. your kitchen window. your back yard. your local farmer’s market.

Know who grows your food, they should be part of your local community.

Know where your food comes from, and you don’t need to worry about GM foods.

please, people, warn all of your friends and family about the dangers, including the wide spread use of GM corn products in pet foods and products, like purina, and ask them to demand labeling, which Monsanto is behind the removal of. All this NONSENSE must STOP!

Vilsack and Obama are in the pockets of Monsanto. Which in a large pert demonstrates what a complete hypocrite this prez is.

I have a garden and also buy from a local farm. But everyone should be concerned about GMO’s and the pollen that is infecting organic farms and other crops. The reach of GMO’s goes far and wide. The newly approved round up alfalfa is going to make it very difficult for organic dairies to stay organic. Just an example of what we face with GMO’s, there is more.

fascist corporations, like Monsanto, constantly complain about getting government off of their backs. Funny, but they don’t seem to have any trouble when it comes to themselves trying to be in the pockets of every government official when it comes to getting their way! http://www.commondreams.org/ne
