In a Wednesday press conference, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) said that he would be forced to layoff 1,500 state workers if Democratic state senators didn’t return and allow his union busting bill to pass.

“In total we have just over $1.7 billion worth of savings in this budget repair bill and for us to lock in that savings we need one thing in particular, and that is for those 14 state senators to come back to Wisconsin to debate this bill, to participate in democracy, and allow us to move forward,” Gov. Walker said.

“For us, the alternative is, if we do not see this bill pass, for this year alone, the total number of jobs that we equated would be the equivalent of the $30 million we save by starting our wage and benefit reforms is the equivalent of 1,500 jobs,” he added.

Last week, 14 state senators left Wisconsin to protest legislation that would curb the union rights of public employees. There are 19 Republican senators, but the state legislature needs a minimum of 20 senators to be present to debate and vote on the bill.

Republicans in Wisconsin said the collective bargaining rights for public employees needs to be limited so the state can avoid laying off workers due to a short-term budget gap of $137 million.

“As I mentioned the other morning in one of the local TV shows here in town, if we are not able to pass the bill by the end of the week, for us that ultimately means at-risk notices will have to go out and ultimately that would effect 1,500 individuals,” Gov. Walker continued. “On top of that, if we don’t achieve the savings that are generated in this budget repair bill for debt restructuring by the end of the week, we lose out on about $16 million in savings.”

Democratic lawmakers said that Republicans need to negotiate with them and slow the legislative process down. Republicans currently have a majority in both the state Senate and House of Representatives.

“The governor has not done anything except insist that it has to be his way, all or nothing,” Wisconsin Democratic Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller told CBS’ The Early Show on Monday. “The governor needs to recognize that this is a democracy and in a democracy you negotiate.”

“I have great respect for our workers both the government and outside of government and I think at a time where our 7.5 percent unemployment rate is still better than the national average, we cannot afford to have anybody laid off,” Gov. Walker added.

“But unfortunately we will have little to no choice if those senate Democrats continue to hold out from allowing the Senate to move forward on a vote on this measure.”

    “Layoffs”?

How about you “Lay-off”, or you are going to jail?

  • Anonymous

He should start by laying off himself.

  • Anonymous

Give me a break. Any takers on his laying off workers even if the Dem’s come back and he gets his way? I’ll bet he does it anyway.

  • Anonymous

Just like a damn Republican–fire 1,500 state workers and blame his actions on the Democrats. “I had no choice, they forced me to do it!”

  • Anonymous

The #Kochwhore should be fired for his unethical phone call with “David Koch”.

  • Anonymous

“Wah, wah! If I don’t get my way, I’m gonna lay people off!”

  • Anonymous

THIS IS WHAT IS IN PART BEHIND THE SCENES

    http://bit.ly/dUEYsI

WHEN WILL FACEBOOKERS ET AL SIGN PETITION THAT THEY WILL NOT VACATION OR SPEND ANY MONEY IN ANY STATE THAT GETS RID OF COLLECTIVE BARGAINING IF IT IS IN PLACE AT PRESENT AND IS THE LAW OF THAT STATE?

  • OAKside

We call your bluff, gov’na. Hopefully you recognize that two-thirds of the nation, including most of your state, will be incredibly… ahem, “disappointed” with you for a decision like that. We know the truth, that layoffs and union-busting absolutely unnecessary. You’ve already committed political suicide, and sided with business over your constituents, so if I were you I’d frankly be afraid to push it any more.

Donald Trump should be hired as a roving ambassador for the United States of America.

    Egypt: “Mr. Mubarak, you’re FIRED!!!!”

    Libya: “Mr. Quadafi, you’re FIRED!!!!”

    Wisconsin: “Gov. Walker, you’re FIRED!!!!”

    Texas: “Gov. Perry, you’re FIRED!!!!”

    Florida: “Gov. Scott, you’re FIRED!!!!”

Maybe this could even be turned into a prime-time television show, or somethin’.

  • Anonymous

Your correct, he has committed political suicide with that call and he hasn’t figured it out yet. If I was him I would resign quickly and hope no ethic charges are brought against me. Because the longer he stays the more chances that they may decided to have him answer questions and then find out more information about him. And guess what, the Koch brothers might as well kiss those power plants goodbye. The first inkling of their organizations going to buy one would instantly be connected to a quid pro quo.

Either way he is a failure. So he will be looking to cash in for those Koch(head) bucks, selling Wisconsin power station cheap and continuing to self destruct government (see proof government bad) and attacking unions. He knows he is now doomed in two years time, booted, along with the majority of his colleges, so it makes little difference as to how outrageous his activities become.

  • Anonymous

All Republicans, including the females, have KOCH ENVY.

  • OAKside

I hope he understands what people are capable of when pushed too far. Laying off people, in this economy, because they won’t agree to give up something they fought so hard for? That’d be insane. I can’t even imagine how destructive the next few years will be under this incompetent fool.

  • Anonymous

And all the right-wing trolls who post here are definitely suffering from a severe case of Koch Envy, just like Gov. Walker of Wisconsin is.

  • Anonymous

I believe they left to prevent a vote from occuring with out debate or discussion. It is an attempt to allow them to be heard. It really simplifies a difficult problem to just say they are running. I think there message is clear, allow debate and some compromise.

How much pay is Walker and his rightwing lynchpen partners giving up in this so called budget emergency? He is a g*ddamned liar.

Gov. Scott Walker (Reptilican-WI) is suffering from a severe case of Koch Envy. He just can’t get enough of those Koch’s.

But female Republicans are also suffering from a severe case of Koch Envy. They, too, can’t get enough of those Koch’s.

Yes, because we all know teaching is useless…I mean so less useful than shilling for the Koch brothers…

Does anyone else find this tool insipid? The best part of my whole day was listening to his foolishness get punk’d! This guy really thinks he is going to get the republican nomination for presidency after this? What a complete ass! He has no ones best interest except his own and the koch bros. The longer he allows this to go on the worst he looks. Especially when the Unions have already made concessions! If he didn’t look bad before the prank phone call made him look like an arrogant, insufferable prick strutting like a peacock. This guy has got lofty aspirations! I’m glad he is the only one who thinks that much of him!

Lets see how this works out. No teachers=no school=you can’t go to work. Even if you leave little Johnny and Susie home alone you won’t be able to get there if it has snowed because the roads are not snowplowed. The garbage probably is starting to stink out front and the powers been down for days along with all emergency services. But the Gov says you don’t need those damn Union people and he calls the Guard, or at least tries to, but nobody answers the phone. Gonna be a real mess Gov!

  • Guest

Damn republicans… pimps and whores one and all!

Way to go Democrats! There really only needs to be a one party system.

Walker, you are using those layoffs to get your way, like a little child. It was you who gave your rich pals 25 million in Medical savings accounts that only the Rich use to get out of paying taxes. And the rest you gave to your corporate buddies and now you want the worker to pay for it. Governor walker, I am asking the Lord Yahshua to bring judgment against you, and your family, for causing unneeded pain to the people of Wisconsin. For making the poor suffer, and those poor souls in pain have no place to go. No relief from that pain. And when God does judge you, maybe when you see that pain in your own family, you will begin to understand.

  • Anonymous

Call his bluff. The revolution starts now.

  • Praxman

Or the ‘lumpen proletariat’ strategy and ride a populist wave giving jobs to those willing to work in tough times and clear the decks of Union Democrats and hire their buddies and use the full power of the State to continue their Xtian social engineering project…. and THEN use the ‘mo-ment-um’ to smash the few protections under Federal law ever other worker/citizen might have had….blah blah blah…BOO!

    It’s 2011?

Perhaps what is happening is a ‘general strike’ going the OTHER WAY?

Since the fucking government can’t plow streets, deliver services, teach kids or do anything else without an ‘automatic check-off’ and horrific violence, incarceration and corruption by union employees, then let the garbage pile up and the flower beds go to weed and the thrice nightly street cleaning trucks do their work after a month of rain.

Shit get a clue…those icky-stan states are in debt and need FED money or earmarks or something…their coffers are bare and they are taking it out on gubmint workers coz they got nothing else!

    It ain’t partisan!!!!

    From Thom Harmann’s blog:

“This political battle has the Koch brother’s fingerprints all over it….
Yesterday – we reported about a little known provision in Governor Walker’s anti-union bill that would allow the state to sell of publicly owned power plants to private industries if it’s “in the best interests of the state.” That provision could allow Walker to sell off power plants to one of his top political contributors – Koch Industries – and give the Koch brothers a vertical monopoly on electricity in the state – owning the production, distribution, and sale of power. We’re talking billions in higher profits. Well – now it looks like the Koch brothers may be trying to follow-up on that deal – a new Koch industries lobbying firm has just opened up in Madison – down the street from Walker’s office – employing 7 lobbyists to work with Republicans state lawmakers. And yesterday – the Koch funded Tea Party group Americans for Prosperity – announced it will begin running ads against union protestors in Wisconsin and President Obama – and the ad encourages people to, “Stand with Walker.” Just like the 2010 midterm election – this political battle has the Koch brother’s fingerprints all over it.”

Be very afraid. And then follow the money trail form Walkers wallet to the Koch’s.

Why can’t the right live and let live. Why does the right and only the right cause so much trouble. If it were just a one party system there wouldn’t be any corruption AT ALL and we could just get on with our lives. Oh, I forgot, it IS a one party system.

The very reason for staggeringly high unemployment is to assure no one has the option to quit.

We want to pretend we’re not slaves, but there is only 1 way to eat and sleep in this society, and that is to toil for someone else; at least long enough to “buy land” so you can go live off of it.. and even then, there’s perpetual taxes, so you have to find a way to generate at least SOME revenue.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QMPOO3PZFN7XV2XZKCGSXXR3WM Joe Somebody

One party systems are the quintessential definition of “corruption”. That’s why we have the two party lie, to make it “look” like we have two, but “they” have infiltrated the “opposition party”. We’re sliding into a one party (corporate party) system, but waving around two different colored flags to confuse everyone…. well, the easily confused Americans, anyway.. most of the rest of the world is shaking their heads in disbelief at what the public has been cowed into letting happen here.

    Harry,
I worked for the SIU (Seafarers International Union) in the late 70′s early 80′s. Ronald Reagan destroyed the American shipping fleet. We went from hundreds of ships to less than 50. Everyone started hiring Libyan flag vessels and the SIU suffered. I felt it and so did everyone else. I know the importance of unions and would fight tooth and nail for their continuance. So, I’m a little confused by your labeling me something other than what I am.

Ha! Now, that’s a mouth full. Actually, collective bargaining should be permitted only for those whose jobs created a potential hazard for athe workers or others’ lives. No one gets hurt falling off a chair. But if you’ve ever tried to give a music lesson to a nurse who has just come from 5 hours sleep after putting in a double shift you know that nurses need to be unionized. As well as, miners, pilots, truck drivers, air traffic controllers, interns and residents. This was once common sense. Now it is a bunch of bullshit. On the other hand we need to support all workers. I must say, when the Teamsters went down WHERE WERE THE TEACHERS? The miners and truck drivers were always out there for others. We need truck drivers to stop driving. Then watch our screen savers come to a halt.

“On 2nd May, 1933, Adolf Hitler ordered the Sturm Abteilung (SA) to arrest Germany’s trade union leaders. He then gave Robert Ley the task of forming the Labour Front (DAF), the only union organization allowed in the Third Reich.

A pay freeze was introduced in 1933 and this was rigorously enforced by the Labour Front. Wages were now decided by the Labour Front and compulsory deductions made for income tax, and for its Strength through Joy programme.

The Labour Front also issued work-books that recorded the worker’s employment record and no one could be employed without one.”

All human beings have a right to join together to demand fair and equitable treatment. It matters not the dangers of the job, nor can you see all situations from your perch. Those working for any given employer know what’s happening to them, neither you nor I do. Telling human beings they must be cogs to be exploited unless their job is “dangerous” is ridiculous.
