WASHINGTON – A Republican-led federal probe of climate scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found no evidence that they manipulated data, after leaked e-mails in 2009 sparked the “climategate” controversy.

The investigation was conducted by the inspector general of the Commerce Department. It reviewed the 1,073 leaked messages, particularly the 289 that were exchanged with NOAA scientists, and interviewed NOAA chief Jane Lubchenco and her staff about them.

“We did not find any evidence that NOAA inappropriately manipulated data,” the inspector general concluded in a recent report. It also cleared Lucbhenco for testifying before Congress that the e-mails did not weaken the science of climate change.

The probe was requested by Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma, the top Republican on the environment committee, who has called global warming “the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.”

The e-mails were stolen in late 2009 from the Climatic Research Unit at Britain’s University of East Anglia. Inhofe and other climate change skeptics suggested it was proof of a conspiracy to corroborate a near-unanimous consensus among scientists that the earth is warming due in part to human activities.

The investigation is the latest in a series of prior probes that exonerated the scientists of any misconduct. They were also cleared by Pennsylvania State University, the InterAcademy Council, National Research Council and the British House of Commons.

The “climategate” controversy is believed to have weakened the prospects for a comprehensive energy and climate change bill in the Senate, after the House passed a version in the summer of 2009.

“None of the investigations have found any evidence to question the ethics of our scientists or raise doubts about NOAA’s understanding of climate change science,” said Mary Glackin, the agency’s deputy undersecretary for operations, according to the New York Times.

The results may have arrived at an important time as the Obama administration battles with the GOP-led House over the extent to which the Environmental Protection Agency should regulate greenhouse gas emissions.

While Republicans have introduced measures curtailing the ability of the EPA to limit pollution, the Commerce Department’s investigation may boost Democrats’ efforts to persuade the public that carbon emissions are having a dangerous impact on the planet.

    Inhofe can just piss off.

Yeah, great, but of course this whole thing is down the giant sucking right-wing memory hole by now and they are on to a new delusion to fuck us over with

  • Tom

Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma, has called global warming
“the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.”

Sorry Mr Inhofe, The Republican party, Republican talking points, and Fox news are the greatest hoaxes ever perpetrated on the American people.

And just a little FYI Mr. Inhofe, hypocrisy is NOT a virtue…

If the government would lie to you about 9/11, WMDs in Iraq, Gulf of Tonkin, “surprise” attack of Pearl Harbor, the sinking of the Lusitania, etc., etc., why would you believe them on global warming? Watch this video and stop being a dupe like I once was: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNRW5qMRnIU

Does the truth ever stop these rat bastards? Only when hell freezes over.

When a republican opens his mouth get ready for lie after lie after lie. They don’t know how to tell the truth. The truth is a factor that changes on a daily basis with orders from headquarters.

It’s becoming clear even now to FOX NEWS viewers, that the GOP is the big hoax.

  • Anonymous

to the author: please be more clear in your wording – i was almost to the end of your article before I could ascertain whether the scientists being cleared in this investigation were the LEGITIMATE scientists, or the “phony’ scientists hired by the Koch Brothers et al, to fake data. Thanks! (perhaps the headline could have contributed to my confusion, and I realize that the author doesn’t necessarily write the headline.)

  • RottenJohnny

So, Inhofe, you going to come out and apologize for your moronic statement? What’s that? Right-wing scum never apologize? Thought so.

  • Anonymous

    Of course they cleared them…

This is about cap and trade, which is a tax TO the globalists, to fund their near-future global engineering, of people and countries, FROM everyone. A literal tax on everything. Already being done in some states.

How many republicans already voted for this? Look it up… including Jesus Christ Christie, himself.

Globalist will work through either party.

  • Anonymous

    Please.

  • Taleisin

So now the scientists have been cleared, it is time to investigate Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma and his mates.
Those who have contributed through disinformation to advance the causes of the multinationals, and delayed the need for serious changes to our lifestyles, should be investigated.

Surely it is a crime against humanity to deliberately delay the course of action required to save our agricultural land, breathing air etc.

Sen. James Inhofe, a perfect example of what’s wrong with the representation in Washington, needs to have his mouth washed out with soap. From the movie “The Christmas Story”, I heard that Lifeboy was the best. Just leave the soap in there until he learns how to speak without sticking his foot up his… er in his mouth.

I had to stop watching the video because the bullshit meter went off. The first thing the guy on the video said was if you’re going to pour billions of dollars into proving global warming then that will be the results.

The study wasn’t done to get a result. What happened was several scientist wanted to measure certain pollutions in the atmosphere. The measurement of these certain pollution wasn’t based trying to prove global warming. The fact is they weren’t sure what to think of it. That is how it began.

The measurements were made year after year. This is called collecting data. Once sufficient data is collected then the analysis of the data will begin.

What the bullshitter on the video is doing is retroactive, meaning he is talking the analysis of the data and pretending using that as a claim that this was the real reason for beginning the measurements of the gases. Bullshit. The scientist did not know what to expect in the beginning.

Each year the measurements were taken the pollution wasn’t dissipating. In fact the pollution was increasing. What does this mean in the long run. This is where the theory of global warming comes in. The next step would be to take measurement that will match the theory.

One of the measurements that will match the theory is warming will cause more moisture in the air. This will cause floods, winter storms, more powerful hurricanes. The data came in and sure enough the moisture in the air has increase by 7 per cent. Doesn’t sound like a whole lot in our layman’s brain but in the world of science 7 per cent is shocking. No question about global warming is a strong theory.

The polluters who do make billions and billions polluting and are the ones looking out for the bottom line are the one’s spreading the bullshit the video is spewing.

Science journals which are peer reviewed has brought up the issue and there was no dispute. Not until the issue became public conscious. This is when the polluters step in to create doubt which is what this video is doing.

I find it amazing that anyone would side with polluters and attack scientist. The scientists cannot risk their standing with their colleagues. There is a standard. Scientists are not in a secret spooky conspiracy illuminati group.

Polluters have no standards, they can lie all they want, no big deal, they are the watchers of wealthy and bottom line, they will crush any information that threatens them.

I suggest you wear a noseplug before watching the video.

  • trank

the damage is done. limbaugh especially, but all right wing radio dedicated itself to this in the weeks before copenhagen climate gathering to weaken obama’s position there.

and it is a SHAME that any of our universities continue to broadcast their athletics on radio stations (licensed to operate in the public interest) that dedicate themselves to global warming denial. many do, including the University of Wisconsin. They need to be pushed into finding alternatives.

local sponsors of these right wing radio stations doing climate change denial need to be asked if they agree with it, boycotted. aside from the moral issues it is even ridiculous from a business standpoint, for instance, for businesses that would benefit from the climate change generated building retrofitting to advertise on these stations.

.. because it’s not the government that is telling us Global Warming is real. It’s thousands of independent researchers that tell us its real. It’s the FACT that average global temperatures are rising. BTW, I work with some of these researchers and I’m willing to back their expertise over Imhoffe’s.

Did it occur to you that your position is really…
I don’t believe anything the government says that’s why I support my elected officials when they say Global warming is a hoax perpetrated by people who devote their lives to studying such things.

How about this… If you really believe that the government is lying to you, and you get conflicting messages from the government, perhaps you should look at the experts FIRST and THEN listen to what the politicians say to determine which side is lying.

Watch the video I referenced, or view the climategate breakdown at http://whatreallyhappened.com/WRHARTICLES/climategate.php. The “experts” you are so enthralled with are PAID by the government. If you do the research as I did, you will find that the only research information you can trust are independently funded.

The fix is in. The only motivation for this fraud is to stick the taxpayers with another fleecing model (cap and tax, derivatives trading on carbon futures). I know it will take some time to deprogram yourself (it took me about a year as I bought into this deception, which is VERY well funded), but be brave and do the research yourself. Climate change always happens, the world is actually cooling, and polar bears can swim. And just because a jackass like Inhofe happens to be right in this case; well, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Just one inanity that I noticed before deciding not to waste any more time on what was clearly the same confused denial I’ve seen a hundred times before, was the dual contentions, clearly stated, that #1 global warming isn’t happening and besides #2 it’s caused by sunspots. Huh? I’m particularly charmed by the charge that pro-AGW scientists are money motivated… whereas, we assume, the millions of dollars poured into denial by the carbon industry are pure science. The Koch brothers don’t fund RESEARCH on AGW, they spend over $3 million a year on shear DENIAL. [PS, if scientists were motivated by money they be working for them]

Global warming is big government, billionaire philanthropist funded population control, eugenics, and total dictatorial power of manufacturing, society, industry, media, energy consumption, quality of life etc…

Most of you cant see this, and will just yell at everyone, anyone in support of “saving the earth”, which will blind you of the REAL problem humanity has.

The biggest problem humanity has always faced has been tyrannical government/monarchies etc…If you fall for the green movement brain washing BS, and lump yourself into this big malleable demographic…You are a follower, a sucker, and are handing over humanity to the same cruel, ruthless power grabbers that have always led the path of humanity.

Now being the frustrated humans that you are, thinking that climate change is actually the problem humanity faces, go ahead and leave all the condescending, pseudo-authoritative comments you want. The one thing you won’t be leaving however, is definitive proof that humans are responsible for the change of a planetoids weather(other than the governments using weather manipulating technologies that have been in use for half a century).

You morons would probably line up in the mass grave to be shot in the back of the head like the jews or native americans, thinking its good for the earth, not realizing this is what our “leaders” have been doing since the dawn of man…

hahahaha, you trust your government, have no real understanding of history, and fall for the guilt, the media manipulation, lies and bullsh*t our world is filled with. We are ruled by deception and fear, AND YOU EAT IT UP.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QMPOO3PZFN7XV2XZKCGSXXR3WM Joe Somebody

The problem with your assertion is, the people that found the problem aren’t proposing the solutions you’re suggesting. They are proposing solutions you don’t like, but the corporate profit-whores are proposing the cap-and-trade paradigm so they can keep polluting and loot you in the process.

Scientists are saying “develop sustainable energy supplies” and “cap pollution before we smother”. Two problems… capping pollution costs corporations money (or we need to consume less) but they don’t want to pass those costs directly to you (or you’d stop buying their expensive crap that you don’t really need in the first place).. so they came up with a “solution” that they know knuckle draggers would balk at.. “tax”, suggesting you’re going to have to pay more in “tax”, that’ll get the proles raging!

The other deals with change (new energy types), and the typical Joe doesn’t like change. And, redesigning society “costs money” as well. All this financial pressure on the proles keeps them screaming against such things, even if refusing to change will kill them in the long run (gee, wonder why education in America is under attack?).

Call me all the names you like; that’s OK, I was where you are once and I know how scary it is to think, even if for a split second, that you might be being sold a bill of goods.

The two mythologies that continue to keep the controlled left and controlled right fighting with each other rather than them uniting and expunging the primary enemy, central banks and their fellow travelers (e.g. the military industrial complex), are the 9/11 jihadist mythology for the right, and the global warming/climate change for the left (notice the updated name change; proof of a degradation of the hypothesis which you conveniently ignore). Each of these mythologies serves the inherent and mostly unconscious, hence, unexamined, biases of each side of the ideological paradigm.

Once these two mythologies are vanquished for the mind control propaganda psy-ops that they truly are, we the people can unite as the Middle East is presently doing, and go after the genuine evil enslaving us in perpetual serfdom–central banking and the move towards a Orwellian global control grid (using climate change and the financial crisis as the reasons) to keep us in the Matrix. Good luck in your search for the truth.

The science of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh will need to become a little more creative to refute the facts and findings of real scientists. When it’s ideology vs. science on a science issue, science usually wins. If it’s an ideology issue, science doesn’t even care. The facts are what they are. Ideology is a construct of the imagination.

    I agree with you, absolutely.

Proponents of a system of world government and the tyrannical measures that accompany it have seized upon the popular issue of global warming to advance long existing plans for global governance. World government has been the desire of power hungry organizations and the individuals running them for many years. The Bilderberg Group, CFR, Trilateral Commission, and their think tanks like the Club of Rome are all such organizations. Council on Foreign Relations member James Paul Warburg, who was the son of Paul Moritz Warburg, a prominent banker, stated before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1950 that, “We shall have world government whether or not you like it — by conquest or consent.”

Terrorism, economics, and global warming are all reasons given by proponents of world government as evidence of the necessity for a new world order. If world government is to be achieved by consent, as Mr. Warburg put it, then the world must be sold on the idea of world government and its necessity.

In a report titled “The First Global Revolution” (1991) published by the Club of Rome, a globalist think tank, we find the following statement: “In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill…. All these dangers are caused by human intervention… The real enemy, then, is humanity itself.”

In the past, the Club of Rome has resorted to deceptive tactics in order to support their plans. In 1972, the Club of Rome, along with an MIT team released a report called “Limits to growth.” The report stated that we were to reach an environmental holocaust by the year 2000 due to overpopulation and other environmental problems. Support for their conclusions was gathered by results from a computer model. Aurelio Peccei, one of the founders of the Club of Rome, later confessed that the computer program had been written to give the desired results.

Today, global warming and climate change in general have become foundational issues for one of the largest political movements of our time. As more focus is placed on global warming, the solutions which are being presented to the world often have nothing to do with what many are saying is the root cause of the problem. Scientific evidence has emerged, highlighted in the documentary “The Great Global Warming Swindle,” which supports the theory that the sun is in fact a major driving force behind global warming. Ice core samples show that CO2 levels (which are blamed by many to be the initiating force behind a rise in global temperature) rise 800 years after an initial rise in temperature. Other data gathered regarding solar activity show a clear connection between fluctuations in the sun’s activity and temperature variations on earth. If the sun is in fact the culprit for changes in the earth’s temperature, world taxes, global government and other solutions we are being given are not cutting to the root cause of climate change.

In response to the conventional explanation of global warming, several calls have been made by various individuals to create a system of world government, and put into place rigid controls over the lives of millions across the world.

Richard Haass, the current president of the Council on Foreign Relations, stated in his article “State sovereignty must be altered in globalized era,” that a system of world government must be created and sovereignty eliminated in order to fight global warming, as well as terrorism. “Moreover, states must be prepared to cede some sovereignty to world bodies if the international system is to function,” says Haass. “Globalization thus implies that sovereignty is not only becoming weaker in reality, but that it needs to become weaker. States would be wise to weaken sovereignty in order to protect themselves…”

Gordon Brown stated recently that a ‘new world order’ must be created in order to combat global warming.

Dr. Eric R. Pianka, a professor at the University of Texas who has a following of dedicated environmentalists, made startling comments regarding population reduction to a group of students and other scientists in April of 2006. Because of the negative effects of overpopulation on the earth, Pianka proposed that the Ebola virus be used as a tool of population reduction. Pianka also praised China’s one child policy, saying that, “China was able to turn the corner and become the leading world super power because they have a police state and they are able to force people to stop re-producing.”

Everyone, regardless of your position on global warming or the environment, must take into consideration the solutions that we are being given, as well as the forces behind them which seek to create a global system of domination and control.

  • Roberthe

I made it through a few minutes before I was overwhelmed by the inaccuracies, misrepresentations and the cherry-picking. The idea that all climate change “hysteria” is driven solely by a quest for funding is, on the surface, absurd. First, all the sciences receive some funding from the government. This has been the case for several years but it is just recently that climatologists hit upon a stratagem to bilk the people out of billions of dollars, leaving the other disciplines in slack-jawed awe. Second, it’s not just climatologists in the United States; it’s climatologists everywhere (the dreaded International Climatologist Conspiracy perhaps). Third, it’s not just the climatologists but the physicists, chemists, biologists, etc. Fourth, it’s not just individual scientists or scientific disciplines but the national science academies world-wide, the Pasteur Institute, the Max Planck Institute, etc. Greg, there hasn’t been a single case of fraud perpetrated by a scientific discipline ever, not one, let alone one perpetrated by the entire scientific community world-wide. Who am I going to trust, the Koch brothers or the world’s scientists? Hmmm…

As far as some of Molyneux’s other points:
    1) The science behind AGW is reproducible in a high school science lab. Regardless, the real experiment is taking place around us.
    2) Over the last 100 years 13 of the 20 most active hurricane seasons have taken place in the previous 20 years, which shreds his assertion about frequency.
    3) He quotes Roger Pielke as saying that one can’t attribute any one weather event to global warming. This isn’t a misquote but it is misleading. Here is my own quote mine of Professor Pielke “the evidence of a human fingerprint on the global and regional climate is incontrovertible as clearly illustrated in the National Research Council report and in our research papers.” Molyneux used what he wanted without acknowledging the at Pielke believes in AGW.
    4) Solar irradiance drives the climate and has warmed up other planets as well. (Sigh) Solar irradiance is down from the recent peak fifty years ago, exactly during the time that the Earth’s temperature has been rising. Furthermore, 2010′s record heat occurred simultaneously with the lowest level of solar irradiance in over 100 years. As for the claim that the non-existent increase in solar irradiance has warmed Mars, Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto, I suggest you do some research of your own on this topic. That Molyneux might even use Pluto as an example verges on the ludicrous: we have observed it for less than one third of its orbit; we have no idea of what its climate actually is therefore we are in no position to discuss any anomalous climatic behavior; we don’t even have a clear sense of its major topology-the damened thing is 3 billion miles away.

And there I had to stop. I have no doubt that Molyneux is intelligent. He might even believe what he says. But just because you are intelligent and believe in what you say doesn’t mean you’re correct.

“if at any time you think that manufactured fear to lower our standard of living and further dictate are lives is ANYTHING but a scheme, you’ve got some growing up to do!”

Hmmmm… were you just in a hurry, or are you not aware that the words “are” and “our” are actually different words that mean different things?

It is usually such basic word errors which betray those who don’t read much, don’t read often, and therefore don’t read very well. The rest of your babbling gibberish confirms this.

While a single scientist — or even many — may lie, Science itself does not. Peer review systematically nullifies and exposes liars. If the system of peer review is not absolutely perfect, that’s probably the very worst that any critic can say of it. They cannot say that, on the whole, that the system of peer review is not very, very good at verifying (or falsifying) scientific claims.

Television, on the other hand, has no such system of review. Liars with money can broadcast whatever lies they want to, and they do so with impunity. Wherever Television and Science differ, there is a liar with money influencing Television.

Its time to look closer at politics and history.

    Bill Clintons mentor, Carrol Quigley:

“The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to the doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can “throw the rascals out” at any election without leading to any profound or extreme shifts in policy.

True – Foxnews.com is completely ignoring this story.
I searched for “climategate” (and also climate-gate) for the past 24 hours, past 4 days, past week, past month: nothing. No “good” news from the Republican perspective, therefore, no news, period.

Now search for the past year:

This goes far back enough to that happy time when the billionaires Koch – and Murdoch – actually thought “climategate” might kill this whole pesky little global warming issue.

“global warming/climate change for the left (notice the updated name change; proof of a degradation of the hypothesis which you conveniently ignore)”

This alone exposes your wholesale ignorance of the subject-matter at hand.

You aren’t even aware that the phrase “climate change” was re-introduced into the discussion environment by the Bush Administration, following the recommendation of Republican pollster Frank Luntz… whose focus group research had determined that the phrase “climate change” would serve the Republicans purpose of sowing doubt and confusion — and delay — better.

In the scientific literature, the phrase “climate change” is the original phrase used, and dates back into the early 1940′s… the term “global warming” emerged after fifty-odd years of research, and only became popularized after being used during Senate testimony by NASA scientist James Hansen.

  • Mr. Neutron

But Mr. Inhofe said the report was far from a clean bill of health for the agency and that contrary to its executive summary, showed that the scientists “engaged in data manipulation.”

You’ve made the mistake of assuming I don’t know what I’m talking about. I run IT Support at a private research University. I’m at my desk right now, sitting above my computer clusters, several of which are running climate modeling. I’m sitting below 4 floors of world renown GeoPhysical Scientists. Aside from my own background in the physical sciences, I work with real climatologists.

You might be shocked to hear this, but we don’t work for the government. We do receive grant support from the NSF, but not all of our funding comes from government sources. It might also shock you to find out that we don’t write grant proposals to prove global warming is true, ergo we need to set up a cap-and-trade exchange. Grants are written to collect and evaluate data.
Here’s the most shocking bit of all. If one of my researchers were to release a paper that definitively debunked Global Warming, or at least Anthropogenic causes and that paper could withstand review, they’d probably win a nobel prize. They would certainly be world famous and they’d never have to fight for funding again. Disproving is the wet-dream of GeoScientists.. unfortunately, the facts don’t cooperate.

    re: your video.
    Within 2 minutes….
    - Billions of dollars aren’t spent to prove global warming, it’s spent to collect and analyze data.. to make increasingly accurate models.. Nice try at re-framing.
    - Using a work of fiction “1984″ is NOT a valid proof of how governments operate.
    - Oceans DO release more CO2 as they warm.. but we know by the isotope ratio in atmospheric CO2 that it’s very old.. and coming from fossil fuels. We know EXACTLY where all the CO2 is coming from.
    - Absolutely wrong about climate change research not being reviewed or reproducible. An outright lie.
re: Myth1.. the video is absolutely wrong.. except for the mined quote in point 3.. which is a point that ACH researchers are always careful to make. It’s climate not weather and no respectable scientist points to one storm to prove Climate Change.

First, let me apologize for the “addled troll” comment, you’re subsequent comments seem to indicate it’s inappropriate. But, if you’ll read carefully, I did not “conveniently ignore” any “proof”, as the video you posted not only failed to offer any, but, as I pointed out, cited contrary “evidence” that contradicted itself. A few minutes into it I realized it was the same confused mishmash of denial I’d heard from the Denier side before. Again (in a nut shell), #1 there is no such thing as global warming and #2 the warming is caused by something other than people.(?) [PS, I agree about the 911 Mythology and the fact that basically the main problem is Fractional Reserve Banking.] Oh, also, please consider that everything we need to do to stop AGW has to be done for other reasons. Burning coal is insane, kills people, destroys Appalachia, poisons the environment w/arsenic, mercury and cadmium. Similarly oil.

  • Mr. Neutron

“The Government” was telling people AGW was nothing to worry about, back when Bush and the GOP cronies were running things. Remember ?

Cheney/Bush unsigned the Kyoto Protocol – and made up a new word.
Bush hired a 20-something campaign worker to rewrite NASA reports on the seriousness of anthropogenic global warming – remember when they found out that guy lied about even graduating from college, and had to fire him ?

Denying AGW is definitely a rightwing, “conservative” thing – remember that when the shit hits the fan.

The spin is on with this issue. Are these conspirator scientist faking the disappearance of our poles and glaciers. Give me a break. Even the warming deniers know this is happening. Is this like faking the moon landing? No. There is solid science to back up global warming. Period. But yet the same propaganda “Oh, it’s still snowing here! All you scientist must be wrong!”, is all that you seem to hear. The real data is out there and it’s not even hard to find. There is actually facts to back up these theories, it’s not a conspiracy to tax us on carbon. The sad thing is it’s going to be too late soon to effect real change if things keep going the way they are now. I think we all love our children and we better start thinking about their futures.

Depends on what you are scoring. Climate researchers did well on things like facts, evidence, and general integrity.

The folks in the denial business succeeded for the time being (however shortsighted it might be) in preventing any serious push to really get behind something that *might* lead us to a solution.

I don’t know how impressed I am with cap-and-trade. Seems a bit too Post-Milton-Friedmaneque to be a real solution to my mind.

Sorry…There is too much to lose otherwise, and we’ve already lost a lot in terms of economy and freedoms, because of manufactured fear paranoia.

I am not dumb and I have seen a lot of evidence also, thats why I am so convicted on the issue. If you think there is nothing to my claims that is fine.

  • Roberthe

Climate change has occurred before, but not with the rapidity that we currently are observing. In the past climate change has been mediated by processes that work slowly: plate tectonics, variability of orbit and axial tilt, solar irradiance due to the Sun’s variability, and massive volcanism such as flood basalts. We know from ice cores that CO2 mediates temperature. There is a close correlation between CO2 levels and the temperature of the Earth; low levels of CO2 are found when the climate is cold, conversely higher levels of CO2 are associated with warmer periods. In the past the amount of change we are currently observing in atmospheric CO2 has taken thousands of years whereas we have managed to produce CO2 levels higher than any we have seen in the 10,000 centuries in a mere 150 years. We have increased the level of atmospheric CO2 by 40% in that short period. CO2 is noted as a greenhouse gas and has been cited in scientific literature as an important driver of global climate for over 100 years. We ignore this reality not only at our peril but the peril of the vast majority of species with whom we share this planet.

I don’t expect you to accept this information. Perhaps you will take the time to respond with information that counters mine. For the time being I would appreciate you addressing the issue of climate change rather than perceived economic and political threats; they really are two separate, though interconnected, concerns.

Since carbon dioxide is so harmless (or even beneficial — the more, the merrier, as your corporate masters would have you believe), maybe you should just wrap your lips around the end of a car’s tailpipe and take a few deep breaths. Do us all a favor.

  • Taleisin

Absolutely. If I think it, I can make it real. Deepak and Tony Robbins tell us this and they are great guys. Couple that with some a Xian fundamentalist culture and you have a very dangerous delusion. The longer they are about to maintain the status quo, the more irreparable damage is done to the planet.

I wonder if we have already gone past the point of no return. It often takes years before our effects on nature become apparent. Whiteman’s impact on the Australian landscape shows this. Nature is generous to it’s last gasp, then suddenly an area becomes unusable.
Thanks for the site. I am surprised at how little money it takes to buy a politician.

  • Roberthe

No, no, no, southernfried! Although CO2 does indeed come out of the tailpipe it’s the carbon monoxide that would most likely kill him first. The proper suggestion to Mr COX would be to put his head in a plastic bag, seal it, and then start to breathe until the evil devil-gas claims another victim.

As always, I am amazed that so many deniers think AGW is all about money and government, whether it be to increase scientists’ funding from the government or as a new revenue stream for the government in the form of cap-and-trade. So many conspiracies, so little time.

The real problem is they do not care if they get caught out in a lie. The Republicans and right wing mass media have demonstrated repeatedly a complete indifference to getting caught out in a lie and will within minutes of getting caught blandly repeat the lie.
No difference here, they knew the truth would come out, they didn’t care and in this case, they simply said the report justified their accusations, regardless of the fact stated the exact opposite. They know they wont get called out on it by corporate controlled mass media, they know there will be no penalty for lying no matter how repeatedly, even when as an elected official those lies are legally actionable because they are a government release of information.

Fact: There is 10X more energy stored in the ash from burning coal than we get from burning it. It’s called THORIUM, a nuclear fuel that can’t be used for weapons. If CORPORATE MONOPOLIES and CRONY GOVT would stand down, we could use our coal resources in a non polluting way. The technology to do this is here TODAY. We simply need to collect and recycle coal ash into nuclear fuel.

Much, if not most, of the whole “climategate” farce revolved around accusations of supposed manipulation of global temperature data. And what’s really amazing about this farce is that it is not very difficult for someone with basic programming skills (C++/Java/Python/Whatever) to perform his/her own independent “sanity checks” on NASA/NOAA/CRU global temperature reconstructions. All of the temperature data needed to do this (raw as well as “adjusted”) are available for free on-line. Furthermore, all of the “adjustments” made to generate the “adjusted” data are fully documented, and all the adjustment techniques have been fully vetted in the peer-reviewed literature. And besides that, the “adjustments” turn out not to have much of an impact on the global-average temperature results anyway! (as I found out in my independent analysis of the temperature data).

In just a few days of “spare-time” programming, I was able to write a routine that reads in *raw* temperature data and computes global average temperature results. Here is a graph of my results compared with NASA’s official “Meteorological Stations” results: http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/9994/landstationindexnosmoot.jpg

Notes: I used *raw* data to compute my results. And the results shown in the plot above are what popped out on my first “full-up” data processing run. I didn’t have to fiddle with any “fudge factors” or anything like that. The above plot is the output of a very straightforward gridding/averaging algorithm that a college freshman could put together. No fancy stuff, no data “manipulation” — it all boiled down to a very straightforward averaging technique. And I was still able to replicate NASA’s official results surprisingly closely. If NASA were really “cooking the temperature books”, I wouldn’t have been able to replicate their results with such a simple, straightforward program (Oh, and did I mention that I used *raw* temperature data?).

In addition, I was able to add features to my program to allow me to compare “raw” vs. “adjusted” and “urban” vs. “rural” data results — and I found that there is not much difference between the results produced by raw vs adjusted or urban vs rural data.

A competent programmer/analyst could do what I did in a week’s worth of time, tops.

Now the question is, in all the years that deniers have been attacking the surface temperature record, why didn’t they spend a few days to write up their own simple analysis software and test their claims by crunching the data for themselves before they started going out and accusing NASA/NOAA/CRU/etc of temperature data fraud?

(That’s a rhetorical question, of course).
