WASHINGTON – The Republican budget proposal to sharply cut federal spending would cost 700,000 jobs through 2012, according to the independent analyst Moody’s.

In a new report obtained Monday by the Washington Post, Moody’s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi analyzes the House Republican budget proposal cutting spending by $61 billion this year and projects that it will curtail job growth.

“The House Republicans’ proposal would reduce 2011 real GDP growth by 0.5% and 2012 growth by 0.2%. This would mean some 400,000 fewer jobs created by the end of 2011 and 700,000 fewer jobs by the end of 2012,” Zandi concluded.

The numbers challenge the GOP’s philosophy that government spending cuts help create jobs and grow the economy, a view that puts the party at odds with Democrats.

Republicans have invoked job creation as a top priority, vigorously campaigning on the issue and attacking Democrats for ostensibly being lackadaisical about unemployment. The House GOP majority labeled its measure to roll back health reform the “Repealing The Job-Killing Health Care Law Act.”

The report notes that Republicans are exercising “modest” but “meaningful” fiscal restraint, but serves as a warning that cutting government spending can sometimes hurt job growth.

“While long-term government spending restraint is vital, and laying out a credible path toward that restraint very desirable, too much cutting too soon would be counterproductive,” Zandi wrote.

House Republicans passed their budget just over a week ago by a 235-189 margin, setting up a stand off with President Barack Obama and Democrats.

“So be it”. John Boehner, Feb 2011. When will revolution FINALLY take hold in the place where it all began??? We are all Khaled Said, folks.

Never fear, the wealthiest 2% of America will create a plethora of jobs thanks to their hefty tax cut extensions any day now. No, really!

  • Anonymous

Lets cut 50% of the defense budget and see if jobs are lost or created.

  • Anonymous

Then the $900 billion stimulus should have created 10 million jobs by their reasoning.

This battle the Reichwingers have undertaken against the middle class is beginning to have some repercussions. It turns out that a lot of school teachers, firemen, police officers and social workers that have voted Republican all their lives, have come to a gestalt.

They now understand that the people they have been supporting for a lifetime, hate them and want to do them in and ruin their lives.

The next few months are going to be interesting. The Nazi’s have been successful in recruiting the ignorant and the under or un employed to work with them to bring down the working class. Families are being pitted against families. The stabbing and shooting will have to be between brothers and sisters…if it comes down to that.

Why, one would almost think we are approaching a new Civil War.

    It will be most uncivil.

  • Richard

Hmmmmm I wonder how many of the 700,000 voted Republican in the last election??

  • BrainRagYell

Let’s remember that almost 700,000 people lost their lives during the Civil War.

There was nothing civil about it.

And there is nothing civil about a political party that decides to eat the middle-class and government service workers instead of shaving back their own salaries and closing corporate tax loopholes.

  • ce2756

Let me get this straight; the Republi-baggers want to eliminate MORE jobs, delay retirement, and not pay unemployment. They WANT people to have nothing to do but plot insurrection?
How long will people stay homeless, hungry, and hopeless before there is revolution in the streets? 10 years? 20, 30 40? Eventually, a generation will arise that has had enough and freedom will come to America. If we wait long enough it will arrive on a tide of blood as in Libya. Let’s put an end to this stupidity, now, while there is a chance to do it in a civil manner. Start recalling these Koch-suckers!

That’s great news if you’re an undocumented immigrant willing to work 16 hours a day for room and board!
The rest of us can have a great future working for credit at the Company store, alongside our children, so there will be no need for child care. Isn’t it great how well the Republi-baggers have thought this out for us? And they’re getting rid of that pesky school thing so we won’t have, like, educated thoughts distracting us, keeping us from achieving maximum productivity.

Government-subsidized jobs (why does Boeing have plants and suppliers in 400+ congressional districts) always scream when threatened. But with a stable dollar (instead of Bushabama’s dollar dive inflation) and less government meddling that constitutes a barrier to entry, the economy will grow with real jobs, instead of government jobs and those subsidized by government.

There are thousands of Boeings. Yes, defunding the Pentagon Complex will end thousands of jobs but will open up thousands more. Remember, The Soviet Union had full employment – everyone had a government job. Is that our future?

So is the GOP trying to bring on the depression that they were placing their bets on, their ‘futures’ and so on? The only reason they are so furious with Obama is that he prevented it.

That has to be the only explanation for their otherwise completely inexplicable behavior in matters fiscal.

They only want to cut when it is our priorities that are taking precedence over theirs. But what were theirs? does anyone ever think to ask?? What WERE they trying to do to the economy under Bush except sink it, so that the people who were excessively wealthy could just buy everything up for pennies.

Walker in WI is trying desperately to implement through his big government what Obama prevented the rich from doing to everyone. Why else sneak his no bid contracts for public utilities sell offs without fanfare? The rich EXPECTED this from a Republican win in 2008. They are mad as hell that they didn’t get it, so are trying to take it by the back door.

My suspicion is that things have gone so far in the direction the fascists want, that they no longer have to be sneaky about it. – “Just drop them trousers and squeal like a hog, Boy.”
Face it, the rich pay few taxes, the corporations pay no taxes; the voting system is corporate owned and the votes are corporate ‘counted’; the Supreme Court handed over the keys to the bus with ‘Citizens United’ (interesting that the Koch front group, previously, gave a seat at the table to Clarence Thomas, huh?); the lap dogs in Congress and Government are becoming more obvious daily. Who knew the ‘conspiracy theorists’ were right all along?

John, ain’t that the truth. I worked 31 years as a firefighter, 20 of those as a union member. I could never understand how my brothers could vote republican even after being shown the facts concerning republican anti-unionism.

Another 700,000 Americans added to the unemployment roll. That means that Eric Cantor Israel’s top man in DC will get to keep giving Israel its yearly billions.

One has to wonder what type of morality our Congresspeople and Senators have when they decide to add to the unemployment of people who may have voted for them and still maintain giving foreign aid in billions tp Israel, Egypt, Pakistam amd others.

    Those actions border on criminality.

Everything Republicans do is in support of Cheap Labor.

They give lip service to stopping illegal immigration, but they don’t do shit about it, because illegal immigration keeps wages low.

Cutting jobs means more desperate people competing for who will do the job the cheapest, further depressing wages.

If you view all of the policies that Republicans espouse through the lens of Cheap Labor, they all suddenly make sense.

Republicans are the Cheap Labor party, because they are rich, yet still cheap.

  • Anonymous

Did anyone think for even a minute without this report that given the simple fact that most federal dollars outside of defense either go for procurement of items like copiers and other office equipment or to wages that one could cut $61 billion from the federal budget and not have jobs effected. What this really shows is just how inefficient giving tax cuts to business is in generating jobs.

$61 billion dollars equals 700,000 jobs according to the report. Using this equivalency it appears that had Obama used all of the original stimulus for job creation within the federal government framework, as so many out of work people wanted and some on the left strongly suggested he do, he would have created over 7 million jobs with his $786 billion dollar stimulus. Instead he gave most of that stimulus except for about $300 Billion in tax cuts and instead of creating the 7 million jobs he saved an created about 3 million by the most generous figures available.

The Obama plan while being good for big business was only a compromise in the sense that jobs were compromised for crony capitalist graft and this report shows just how inefficient the private sector is in creating jobs.

In addition, one of the things that many are pointing to in the Obama administration’s bailout is the successful rejuvenation of the auto industry, specifically the bailout of General Motors where the administration poured in about $50 Billion, at least some of which has been speculated may never be recouped, has through a combination of middle class, that is, government largess and union generated givebacks in the form of retirement benefits, health coverage, and wage reductions has produced a profit of $4.7 billion for the company in 2010, which makes one wonder if all that talk about unions breaking companies, rhetoric which is now being used as effectively against the public sector unions as it has been used against the private sector, is nor splitting the middle class in what is the most efficient class warfare this country has seen since the late 19th century.

But not to worry I have it from an impeccable source right here at RS that once unions are gone, corporations have free reign to pay whatever they want, externalize as many costs as possible, offer no benefits whatsoever, employ child labor where appropriate, pay women half or less of what men earn and government as we currently know it no longer exists, while tort reform makes punitive, negligent and injury lawsuits either prohibitively expensive or remuneratively implausible, we will all be able “to feed a family of four on $.50 cents an hour.”

And won’t those be good times.

  • Anonymous

Depression here we come! What happened to their vow that they are the job makers? Like Scott Walker they do not know trhe difference between ending jobs and adding them. Time to move to Mexico, they will have a much better standard of living than America will by the end of the year. America will probably ending up shooting people to keep them from leaving.

  • ce2756

Pay attention you sad, sad, low information tea baggers. Offended by the word “tea bagger?” I certainly hope so because you have been offending a lot of us Americans ever since you have let FOX News, right wing radio and/or the the religious right (which is steeped in fear and intolerance which = hate) oppress your ability for any rational and sane voice in a dialogue of decency. Your weakness and misplaced anger has allowed the oligarchs to divide US and use YOU as a tool to increase their power and fuck this nation. So let me try an enlighten you… again.

The Republican Party is owned by the oil barons, the Wall Street barons, the pharmaceutical barons, the health insurance barons, the corporate media barons, etc. They have no interest in seeing this economy improve under Obama. They want it in the crapper so they can get control of the government again. Look fools, the only legislation Republicans are trying to do is undo are social programs that effects a woman’s body and safety nets for the disenfranchised that is growing daily. Oh, and giving more tax breaks and deregulation for these corporations who pay the least in taxes but gets more representation from the government than the people do.

Let me tell you something else you ignorant fools. You are pissing all over the Wisconsin protesters writing your stupid cliche comments about you being tired of your fellow Americans getting a “free ride.” Fucking idiots. So here it you slow evolving fools. These public pensions were paid by the public workers by their own money. These pensions, like private pensions and 401Ks were invested in these bundled toxic mortgages as AAA securities green lighted by these Wall Street executives. And to no fault of their own, millions of people have lost their jobs because of the collapse of our economy here and around the world due to the Wall Street banksters. Where is your pitchforks for them? Meanwhile, while the Republicans and their media machine label social security, medicare, and public unions as the straw dog for all that is wrong with this country, billions of taxpayer’s dollars is given away to corporate welfare, the military industrial complex, and tax breaks for the rich. Here is a little fact you will never hear on FOX news… or corporate news for that matter. The top 0.01% averages $27,342,212,00 per family while the bottom 90% average $31,244.00 per family. Take time to think about that. Where do you fit in fool?

Here is a piece of advice. Quit thinking in this mindset as a rugged frontier individualist. This isn’t the wild west no more and John Wayne was just an actor. Rush Limbaugh don’t give two shits about you however, he is paid a lot of money to deceive you. Glenn Beck is a wacko or a sick greedy bastard. And Michael Savage is no different than them even if he says so. And everybody else that fits in that bracket are no different. Deep down they are all just a bunch of mean spirited pricks.

And for those who call them selves liberals around here who didn’t vote this past midterm in protest of Obama, fuck you too. You don’t know your U.S. history, you don’t the difference between the members of the parties. But I hope you are paying attention now. And despite your negative attitude over Obama, whether justified or not, you don’t give up the fight. No progressive movement in this country has ever won without the people pushing our leaders. And for all you Ron Paul devotees, just remember, it has been the so called “free market” that has taken this country backwards in a bad way. “Free market” means the predators and oligarchs have free rein. The only Capitalism that works is a regulated one. That is the job of the government. It is right there in the Constitution in black and white if you looking with your eyes open.

If people don’t wake up to the fact that the WHOLE US government (both parties) are corrupt and are doing things to kill US jobs then we are finished. If America goes down we all do, so maybe people should focus on getting rid of Free trade, Globalization, off shoring and outsourcing. We also have to leave the WTO, UN and world bank, same deal, no change here and we are done.

  • Anonymous

I’m not a violent person, nor would I resort to violence on any level, however I wouldn’t shed a tear if every fucking republican in the U.S.were to be run over by a bus, intentional or not.

  • Anonymous

Tell us something that we couldn’t guess already!

  • Walt

You realize that means the government has to step in and do the right thing. So I take it Ron Paul is for the government getting involved in our lives and regulating the free market? That is not what I hear from him. By the way you can’t just shut off Globalization like a water spigot. And why does Ron Paul remain in the Republican Power?

Henry Wallace, U.S. Vice-President, from 1941-1945 defined Fascism as this: “A fascist is one whose lust for money or power is combined with such an intensity of intolerance toward those of other
races, parties, classes, religions, cultures, regions or nations as to make him ruthless in his use of deceit or violence to attain his ends. The supreme god of a fascist, to which his ends are directed, may be money or power; may be a race or a class; may be a military, clique or an economic group; or may be a culture, religion, or a political party. Say what you want to say about progressives but how does that not fully define what the Conservative movement has become in this country?

So, I agree with what you said for the most part but Ron Paul being your savior makes about as much sense as Barack Obama being our FDR without the majority of 98% of us coming together.

The GOP’s primary goal is to defeat Obama in 2012. If 700,000 jobs have to be lost to make that happen, then the GOP is willing to put 700,000 more people out of work. The GOP ONLY cares about electing republicans and is willing to destroy General Motors, Chrysler Corp. and the middle class to make that happen. They do not care about the enonomy or the medical needs of returning service men and women They are in the process of demonizing teachers, fireman and cops because they are unionized and unions tend to vote democratic so now, according to the GOP, teachers firemen and cops are evil. ACORN was registering too many democrats, so the GOP spreads lies and a highly edited film bogus film and, poof, no more ACORN.
It is time to shake up the GOP. Buy a gun, learn to use it, wear it you hip when and go to a GOP rally (unloaded of course). It is perfectly legal, the TEA Party has set precedent with guns at rallies. If enough liberals buy guns, gun control will finally become a reality. The GOP does not want liberal democrats owning guns.
The GOP’s motto: Party before Country!

  • Anonymous

Do the American workers need any more evidence that Republicans exist to take from the middle class and give to the rich? It’s about as obvious as a kick in the face.
The Bush years proved that massive tax cuts for the rich do not create jobs. They actually trashed the economy by giving the rich more money to lobby for deregulation and to invest in destructive financial instruments (mortgage crisis) and commodity speculation (which raises the price of everything we buy). Capitalism does not work without rules, and the Republicans burned the rule book a long time ago.

I whole heartedly agree. And I hope people see the distinction between pushing our leaders and tearing them down. Criticize what they do, not who they are. Losing hope in all elected officials is what the pugs want. They win when liberals and progressives stay home.

That is the Republican goal, the more unemployed there are, the more desperate they become and the less they are willing to work for, hence more corporate profits. Jobs are just are Republican talking point, just like migrants are just a talking point, the Republicans sponsor want fewer jobs and more migrants, which for this quarter means more profits, the it collapses next quarters to buy products is some else’s problem and someone else’s fault, the typical thinking of psychopaths.
When they talk fiscal restraint, how come the complete lack of fiscal restraint of the top one percent never gets mentioned, the insane greed, the apparent desire to see middle America destroyed, the wish to strip away the rights of most citizens so they are ripe for exploitation.

ReslugliCONs want everyone to work for (a much lower) minimum wage so “entrepreneurs” can keep all the money. • jack nichols

It doesn’t make any difference if they cut the budget or not. The Government is spending over two trillion this year. A 61 billion dollar cut will mean nothing. If it keeps a few jobs a little longer then don’t cut it. The economy is such a joke now that it can’t be saved. Soon all the jobs will be lost, the dollar will collapse with hyperinflation. Of course either the rights or lefts will argue for this side or that, blacks against whites, haves against have nots, repubs against dems. Can’t you see this is all a scam. If your really understand what is really happening then you have been very quietly preparing. While fools buy into all this ridiculous fighting, the smart money is preparing to take advantage of the collapse. A very few people will become extraordinarily wealthy. Most will not be prepared and will run to and fro like rats looking for water, until their demise. You smart ones are nodding in agreement you fools will think I’m wacked…now you know who you are and if you will make it in the New World Order.

One aspect of what is going on here is that “They” no longer need us. They are looking at world markets. selling their wares to people in ripe markets like China and India. They need us at home to be broke, stupid, and desperate for any crumb that they toss our way. Any kind of fair wages or benefits, especially those negotiated through collective bargaining, are only a drag on their profits. This, other than a few Get Out The Vote issues like their stances on abortion and marriage or their bumper sticker campaign-deep whining about job creation, is what the GOP represents and has represented for a long time.

Yep. Wedge issues. that was the phrase I was trying to remember.

Cutting jobs and keeping the economy on the sick list is all part of Teabagger Republicans strategy. If they can go into 2012 with unemployment still high, governors refusing federal funds to put people to work, knocking down high speed rail proposals, making sure no new employment is available, Teabagger Republicans feel this will up the ante on their chances of winning the presidency and the Senate.

Teabagger Republicans called President Obama’s budget cuts “The Jobs Killing Bill”; however, when questioned about their pending job killing bill via budget cuts, Boehner nonchalantly says: “So be it.” I don’t hear American screaming, like when they could lay all the blame at the president’s feet. The print media and copy cat pundits have conveniently shut down their mouths on the issue. Their focus is suddenly elsewhere.

When the TP Republicans were talking about “jobs, jobs, jobs” before the last election,I assumed they meant creating them, not eliminating them. OUCH-talk about a sunburned Boner.

Good God! This is so wrong, I don’t know where to start.
You are regurgitating the tripe that the Koch brothers feed to the Baggers, so I guess there is no reason to argue.
Stay home, don’t vote. The rest of us want to make an informed change in the course of this nation.
    Have a nice day.

If you want to look at it that way, political parties are also businesses. It’s in their best interest to let the rape of America continue. It’s in their best interests to pay trolls like you to spread this kind of bilge across these discussions.
Oh, by the way, the Republicans (you know, the austerity party, the responsible guys) are millions of dollars in the hole. How much do THEY know about running a business.

Good grief, don’t you have sheep to diddle, or something?

well, as the US last october ‘created’ just 39,000 jobs total in all of the country (more than that need jobs in our neighborhood…), if the cuts cost 700k jobs… expect to see the unemployment figures go from 19% (9.4% still getting an unemployment check, 9.6% jobless longterm no longer getting any checks), to over 22%. now as the would-be labor force is 160mln… that means we currently have 30mln jobless americans… at 22+%? 35 million… plus dependents…

a 1989 french study showed that historically, it isn’t cruel tyranny against which people revolt much; it takes 15% of a nation’s people in or near-destitution; hungry, going homeless, bankrupt, foreclosed upon. we are there now…

too bad he didn’t OD on those painkillers he had his black maid and chauffeur getting for him… i once was in a taxi and heard limbaugh say, “druggies? throw away the key!” too bad he didn’t practice what he preached… when he was days out of rehab, NBC took him on as the commentator for election eve 2004… but they refused to take chomsky on as his counterpoint.

damnable shame the native peoples didn’t kill all the illegal, murderous christian white trash from europe as soon as they’d landed. wouldn’t have the likes of you and your type here. btw… a study by the US dept of education in 2007 showed that in actuality, the average american high school graduate had read just 68 pages of history… 9% couldn’t point out america on a nameless map; 32% don’t know where england is; 82% can’t spot iraq or afghan after years of wars… working vocabulary here in 1950 was 4500 words; now down to 1550… koko the gorilla could sign-language 1800 words into complex sentences. in 1970, 86% here believed evolution and knew who darwin was… now half that number. my guess is you don’t play very good chess, yourself, eh? freedom first? freedom for whom? goons like thou?
