Secrets outlet WikiLeaks was on the defensive Tuesday after a British publication claimed that founder Julian Assange had complained of a “Jewish conspiracy” to smear his organization.

That claim, Private Eye editor Ian Hislop recalled, came directly from a phone call with Assange himself — and the allegation’s level of specifity was seemingly enough to trigger a lengthy response from the site.

In the latest issue of British current affairs magazine Private Eye, editor Ian Hislop details a Feb. 16 call from the WikiLeaks founder. Assange had phoned to complain about a report in the previous month’s magazine that claimed that a WikiLeaks associate in Russia, Israel Shamir, was a Holocaust denier.

He allegedly called the report “crap,” but admitted that he had not read it.

“The piece was an obvious attempt to deprive him and his organization of Jewish support and donations, he said angrily, and he knew perfectly well who had written it,” Hislop recalled.

Assange went on to say that the British newspaper The Guardian was orchestrating a conspiracy against his organization. He specifically called out “journalist David Leigh, editor Alan Rusbridger and John Kampfner… all of whom ‘are Jewish.’”

Hislop claimed he then explained to Assange that Rusbridger was, in fact, not Jewish.

“When I doubted that the Jewish conspiracy would stand up to the facts, Assange suddenly conceded the point,” Hislop added.

“Forget the Jewish thing,” Assange reportedly said.

In a statement issued via Twitter Tuesday, WikiLeaks denied Hislop’s claims.

“Hislop has distorted, invented or misremembered almost every significant claim and phrase,” he said. “In particular, ‘Jewish conspiracy’ is completely false, in spirit and in word. It is serious and upsetting. Rather than correct a smear, Mr. Hislop has attempted, perhaps not surprisingly, to justify one smear with another in the same direction.”

“That he has a reputation for this, and is famed to have received more libel suits in the UK than any other journalist as a result, does not mean that it is right.”

“Because WikiLeaks has some Jewish staff and enjoys wide spread Jewish support, its staff have frequently been smeared by its opponents, political or competitive, as being agents of the Mossad or of George Soros. These smears are completely false,” the statement added.

First he’s accused of rape, then he’s pegged as an anti-Semite. Either Julian Assange is starting to be the most resentful person alive or there is quite possibly a large government conspiracy to ruin his reputation at work.

Hislop waits two weeks to publish his article. Two weeks sitting on dynamite? I can not believe any journalist with this story would not get in print as soon as he could. Hislop did not spend those two weeks polishing the piece for it is a hack’s hack. Smear and public disassociation by contempt is the name of the MSM ‘s game. There is a conspiracy against Mr Assange just read HBGary’s attack plan, about getting journalists to write against him.

Anyone that speaks against Assange and Wikileaks, are traitors to the human race. They are against freedom, truth, and life, and for that should be labeled such. And of course, don’t forget their lies.

  • mick

Funny how Assange doesn’t release any negative info on Israel and Al jazeera released the Palestinian Paper.
Assange should stop “controlling” the message and release all info he has …on every subject …we seem to be at the mercy of Assanges agenda …just another controlled media !

You mean like the one that launched a secret campaign to use COINTELPRO tactics against Wikileaks and its supporters including American journalists and Anonymous? Nah…

  • http://proudprimate.com Proud Primate

“Specifity” is not a word; “specific” is itself a compound, of “species”, a kind, and “facere”, to make. Therefore, the second “c” in “specific” is not a suffix to be dismissed, but actually part of the root word, “specificere”, to make a kind.

The correct English word is “specificity”.

I am more than sure Julian knows what he’s doing. Put yourself in his place taking on the entire British and U.S. government.

I think the person who invented the bomb would know a little about how it works. He will release what he wants to release when he’s ready to release it.

I don’t think that should make either government too comfortable.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

Multiple media organizations around the world have assigned sizable resources to wade through the huge volume of documents as it it is. How would it ever see the light of day if it were unloaded at once? It has to be vetted and redacted to protect innocents from being put in harm’s way. How would that be accomplished?

What’s more, right-wingers constantly falsely state that WL has “randomly dumped 250,000 documents on the internet”. Why hand them a gift by making that true, offering them yet another excuse to have him murdered or imprisoned and tortured?
Give or take a few mistakes, I think he has shown that he knows what he is doing.

Why is the idea of a Jewish Conspiracy so far fetched? Especially, bearing in mind that WikiLeaks must have cables re Israel, none yet published.

  • ghostof911

Didn’t Wikileaks claim it had an Afghan War video more damaging than Collateral Murder? What would be the strategy in not having that video released?

  • RawReader

Another person make a ridiculous baseless accusation and that’s run as the headline, effectively suggesting to those that just read headlines that Assange complained of a “Jewish conspiracy”. Sheesh.

Note that no Assange documents released mention Mossad or any of the help Israel has provided the US in its torture and rendition programs in the ME.

antisemitism…Bla bla bla…… cry me a fucking river . you have the right to be racist towards Arabs, what is wrong with being apathetic to Jews?

I dont like Assange but accusing him of being hostile to Jews is ridiculous :)

I’ve closed my Amazon, Mastercard and PayPal accounts as a protest to their withdrawal of support for WikiLeaks and everyone should do the same. We haven’t got much control left but this much we do. Companies need to understand that the middle class is not going to take it like lemmings. Are we?

  • Anonymous

Well if sexual impropriety doesn’t turn the people against him, surely the ace in the hole is to imply he’s an anti-semite. It always works right???

What if there is a conspiracy to ruin him? What if it is indeed FACT, is it still anti-semitism to tell the truth?

I’m still with Julian. I wish you well, sir.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

I don’t recall that but I don’t doubt it either. I couldn’t even speculate. Consider that Wikileaks purportedly have millions of incriminating documents in their possession. Who knows what Assange’s priorities might be? But consider also that he is not an American, first of all. In fact, one might argue that he is a stateless actor.

The ace in the hole (anti-semite) If more people went to Al Jazeera.net and read the leaked Palestine Papers they would see what the truth is. Yet people can have all the evidence right before their eyes. i.e. Bush/Cheney Lied and cost an additional 9,000 American’s their lives. Just released on Yahoo that the Iraqi LIED about the WMD’S in Iraq though he lives in Germany now. Why don’t he run hom after 1,000,000 of his fellow Iraqi’s were killed and see if he is greeted with open arms? Then Powell is mad now that he was lied to and wants to distance himself from it all. Still the fact is, There is an Agenda that is working. How many American’s have gone to the FBI’S Most Wanted Web Site and saw that Bin Laden is NOT WANTED for the events of 9/11. Fact is, of they ever found Bin Laden then would the War on Terror be Over? Would the Countless Billions being spent suddenly STOP? No.. They have programmed the Nation and the World. Even the CIA admits that Al Qaeda is a FAKE Organization. Just needed a FIRM to be able to go after the TOP guy like the MAFIA so they gave it a Name.
Read the Palestine Papers and see how far Palestine has tried for PEACE and in return been STABBED in the Back. Read of the Reporters that try to Document this and are shot in the head. (Like Mulder would say, “The TRUTH is Out there!”) Oh, and the Palestine Papers, Confirmed by Wikileak’s. Maybe there is the Kicker?

  • TheDevilCanDance

You don’t know squat about Arabs, like 80% of Americans, you had no idea there was something such as Islam prior to 9/11. ….

  • DriveBy

There IS a small difference between “that does not surprise me” and having documents proving it. We all know BushCo are war criminals and human rights abusers, and having that proved would not surprise me one little bit, but having that proved could sure have further implications. If Assange was as irrelevant as you’re trying to say he is, the US would not be trying to railroad him into a kangaroo court and lynch him Saddam-style, would it? I’m jus’ sayin’.

  • BrainRagYell

That’s a rather broad brush. It’s only Republicans and this new breed of alleged independents that are afraid of the Red/Brown scare. Besides, half our population cares more about Charlie Sheen than what’s going on in their congressional districts. So, yeah, “dumb” you may have right, but we’re not all paranoid about communist or Arab bogeymen.

And by the way, “Yanks” doesn’t apply to all Americans, only those of us from the North East. It’s as if I referred to all Europeans as Spaniards. We’re not all the same, and some are reasonably concerned about America’s foreign policy over the last decade. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Look, Mick – when you watch a fireworks display you leave the order if ignition to the pyrotechnicians. Sure, you could always light ‘em all up at once and have done with it, but it’s always nice to see that grand finale topping off a well orchestrated crescendo. Julian is the maestro, in my book, and I’m content to watch the game unfold. He brought us to this dance, after all – I’ll let him call the tune…

A secular democracy in the Muslim Middle East will be the American Empire’s worst nightmare… more anti-American, and with good reason, than the handful of Muslim extremists who make you soil your diapers today. There is a reason why our “friends” in the Muslim Middle East are all Kings and/or dictators – you need to switch off Hate Radio, Fox News and the pro-war “liberal” media, and try using your head for once. Have you seen the crowds demanding democracy there? Did you see any one of them showing love for America?
I highly doubt anybody can be as stupid as you portray yourself to be.

The US Justice Dept does not seem to be doing much against Julie- if our current AG is making significant moves against Julie, I have not heard about them. And let’s not compare Julie to Saddam in terms of historical significance. Not fair to Saddam. Juliie tells secrets that are mostly yawners and “yeah, so what”s.

Listen little fella, please don’t insinuate that you know where I get my information and what my beliefs are. In this forum, that would be like me pretending to know what your mother’s middle name is. No, none of the popular uprisings in the middle east are about pro Americanism(thankfully). And they are not so much about democracy- but they are all about LIBERTY. I doubt Iran-style Mullahs will gain power in these new governments, but I suppose it’s possible. These movements are more nationalistic than religious in nature(again, thankfully).

  • Anonymous

But I did sweetie. Before 9/11, I knew about a guy named Muhammad who was born about 600 AD in the Arabian pennisula, started a religion, died and his offspring have been fighting a civil war within the religion for the last 1400 years. Many of them seem prone to anger and violence. I thought you were an atheist.

No I don’t know exactly where you get your “information” from, but it’s obvious that you get it exclusively from your favorite watering holes and from nowhere else. Here’s something that could work as a mild antidote to what you’ve been fed about the emerging LIBERTY in the Middle East: http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/260953/my-pessimism-egypt-dennis-prager

Whether it’s new anti-American dictators taking over like Prager claims, or plain and simple democratic governments taking over, it’s BAD news for America so curb your enthusiasm just a touch. BushCo lost the ME so we have to sit back and see where the pieces land.

  • Anonymous

Well, there is some good irony. I do get some of my info from National Review, a great pub. Bill Buckley is a hero of mine. Not a fan of Prager however.

Did not say liberty was emerging in the middle east, but that is clearly what the people are protesting for. As an American, believe me, I would be down with Mubarak and the Saudi monarchy ruling into perpetuity keeping the peace and oil well managed. But in the 21st century, there is so much info to share via social media, people can’t be kept in the dark and they are reacting. We can’t stop it and it is not Bush’s fault.

Not enthusiastic, just hopeful that the coming changes will be for the better. Since America can’t control the events at this time, can I at least be hopeful or should I just worry?

  • Lloyd Hart

There are many Zionists in high places that will do the bidding of US imperialism as Israel’s power elite are completely dependent on the US for military aid to defend the fact that the European and American Zionists stole Palestine from people who have always lived their. The irony is that there is no more greater anti-semitic group on earth than America’s ruling elite. In many respects the US military support for Israel is an act of American anti-semitism as it pits Jewish semite against Arab semite whereas had the European and American Jew just simply migrated back to Palestine, they would be an uncontested part of a greater semitic society. I think any Palestinian and most Arabs for that matter would’ve been very sympathetic especially after the Holocaust to embrace their Jewish cousins especially having tasted the betrayal and mass murder brought upon them by the psychotic christians.
