In the second book in his series Jesus of Nazareth, set for release on March 10, Pope Benedict XVI says that the Jews are not collectively responsible for the death of Jesus Christ, reports the Associated Press.

Though it is not the first time the Church has made that argument — in 1965, the Vatican’s Nostra Aetate stated that Jesus’ death could not be collectively be attributed to either the Jews of the era or those alive today — scholars believe that the reminder in a more accessible media form could assist in combating modern-day anti-Semitism.

It’s not the first time in recent months that the Pope, widely considered the conservative choice after the death of John Paul II, has made waves for stances considered progressive for the modern Catholic Church.

In November 2010, the Pope issued qualified support for condom use in Africa, stating that male prostitutes using condoms to protect clients from HIV transmission was “a first step toward moralization,” indicating an acknowledgment by the Vatican that those knowingly infected with HIV could use condoms to reduce the chances of spreading the disease without running completely afoul of the Church.

And wizards are not collectively responsible for the death of Harry Potter’s dad.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha. I guess he also exonerates Jesus, for being a jew. Well, let’s see now. He has exonerated his “molesting-mob-of-terrorists”, John Lennon, the children that have been molested, etc. What past aggressive poop-head.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

That’s a relief. But when does he absolve his former national leader Hitler for murdering 6 million jews?

  • H.P. Loathecraft

Wait, what’s that on his head? Is that an asshat?

  • http://theelvesattic.blogspot.com JOHN SCOTT RIDGWAY

My Jesus already forgave the Jews… I think the pope stole this idea from my blog http://wakingupjesus.blogspot.com Or perhaps South Park, who did a similar episode? Yea probably South Park…. He is buttering up to them, hoping their next play is about Catholics.

  • Anonymous

I’m confused the Pope does not know the Romans killed Jesus ? Which explains why all the Priest who molested children all those years got away with it.

  • Anonymous

So we can expect the pope to issue a “mea culpa” for child molesting, around the year 3950.

  • Anonymous

Wait is this from The Onion?

  • Anonymous

These comments are all HYSTERICAL but this is the best. Too gotdamm funny. I can’t stop laughing.

  • Schmice

How very kind of him. Thank you so much. Now, for something completely different….

  • Sunshine1970

When I originally saw the headline on Huffpost, I thought it was taken from the Onion…then I read it and realized it was real…

  • Anonymous

Didn’t Pope John Something already do that?

  • Ma’at

    LOL Perfect!!

  • Ma’at

So the leader of the largest pedophile ring on the planet exonerates people who lived 2,000 for killing a mythical figure. Wow. What a guy.

  • http://www.petersaxemusic.com Peter Saxe

    I feel so much better..

  • Anonymous

Well, I’m sure his boss won’t be exonerating him!

  • Anonymous

And he is yapping old news, because why?

He must be bored with the pedophilia, abortion and Gay things. Since, he pretty much dissed humanity his circle of friends has to come back around to where he started, the Jews.

  • Anonymous

The true Holy Apostolic Catholic Church is the Orthodox Church. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew wouldn’t agree with this. Nor would any Bishop of the Orthodox Church. side note: In the actual Catholic Churc, the Orthodox Church, priests can be married.

  • maritimer

HA! thanks for making this recovering catholic smile today.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046573071 Matt Mosley

Of course Jews didn’t kill Jesus, he wasn’t real. that would be like pro-lifers killing Homer Simpson.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EYVXVW2OZBHLFJR5D4AISU73WE Juan

I believe he already did that, but they’re trying to keep it quiet.

  • K7KTR

Now I have to change MY BIBLE, Damn!!! The Bible say’s that God had Ripped the Kingdom from the Jews for them rejecting his Son by killing God’s Anointed One.
I wonder if Revelations comes into play here where it say’s those who ADD or SUBTRACT? It is also interesting that Christ was given the Authority to Judge. I wonder where this Pompous Ass thinks he has the ability to do so?

  • Anonymous

Maybe, he finally read the Book of Revelations, and got one.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

Twas doG’s will. They were simply buggering the sin out of them.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

    Let’s not be too hasty.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

Nice avatar. I recognize that face but I can’t…quite…. Barbara something?

  • H.P. Loathecraft

What you need is the new-improved Conserva-bible™.

  • Anonymous

I’m really glad that’s all cleared up. Mighty big of the Pope to set the record straight after, ya know, two thousand years. Could anything be more irrelevant?

  • Johnny Warbucks

Oh, wow! Ain’t that nice of the wrinkley old man in the dress and pointy hat? However, somebody should remind him that saying that is anti-semitic™. Look at what happened to Mel Gibson for saying it. Wonder if the old devilish man will follow the same fate. But then again, who cares?

  • Johnny Warbucks

It’s an upside down butt plug.

  • Johnny Warbucks

Isn’t that supposed to be Conserva-babble?

  • Johnny Warbucks

I have to post a comment from a Chosen People™ in response to the same article at Ha’aretz. This is better than stand up comedy.

A good sign. And we should realize it is not easy to admit such a thing.

“Hopefully Europe will follow the USA in returning Christianity to its original roots. We were all Jews back then. This is the beginning of the end of the real-politik of Emperor Constantin 325 AD in Nicene. Jesus was a Jew and said very nice things. Turning the other cheek for example, is what Israel is doing vis a vis Palestinians for years. I wish Palestinians will learn our gentle ways and we’ll have peace.” by I.K., Israel

NOTE: The above is not I repeat it is not sarcasm. Them people ain’t capable of that human emotion. Yep. Denial is now a river in Israel.

  • Anonymous

It is all Madoff’s fault. The Pope can blame him.

  • Anonymous

At last! Now I can let that breath out.

  • Gnat K. Coal

    How… TIMELY of him.

  • dk504

Gee Whiz,i wait with baited breathe for any utterance out of Pope Benedicks ramblings. I’m so glad he’s uttered this. Israel MUST be breathing easier. What a jackass.

  • FieryLocks

Next he’ll exonerate himself for being in the Hitler Youth…and then Hitler, the Vatican that supported Hitler, Mussolini, child molesting priests …ect., ect.

  • FieryLocks

Yeah, that sounds like the Catholic Church.

  • FieryLocks

Have to keep those sheep in line.

  • FieryLocks

It’s Barbara ‘fetus in a jar’ W. Bush

  • FieryLocks

Conserva-babble are the voices in their heads and the Conserva-bible is the book they use as foot notes for the voices.

  • Praxman

So according to the Bishop of Rome, whose liturgical wardrobe (minus the Prada shoes) is similar to ceremonial garb wore by Roman Emperors, said it was the Romans and not the Jews?

    Fine by me…

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/UR4DHHC3P6RRXIUP4LWX54YN7I hu

Has he forgiven the Romans too? I seem to remember Romans having a pretty big role in the whole “killing Jesus” thing…

  • Wickerman59

From a purely theological point of view this is complete bullshit. In Christianity an atoning, sacrificial death is required to absolve sins. God (pay attention) was responsible for killing Jesus. It is right in front of people. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not persish but have everlasting life.” There are many more scriptural examples to clarify this point. Man, the arrogance of the Roman Catholic church supposing they speak for God. They spread all kinds of fairy tales and never encourage their followers to seek the answers for themselves in the Holy Bible. Besides, in Christian theology Jesus was only in the grave for 3 days and then rose from the dead. His defeat of death is the cornerstone of the Christian religion.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/UR4DHHC3P6RRXIUP4LWX54YN7I hu

yeah, but who would marry a man who wears a dress?

  • Anonymous

Only morons accept the historicity of the Gospels

  • Anonymous

That pope, next he’ll be telling us not to invest with Bernie Madoff.

  • Anonymous

    Don’t give him any ideas.

  • mjcc1987

So, a former Nazi absolves the Jews of having a Jew killed 2,000 years ago but hides priests who molest little boys and girls and then attacks the victims… um…….

Sounds like the usual steaming pile of shit coming from the vaticum

  • Hassan i Sabbah

John 23rd did this. Upon hearing which my mother said, “Who’s he?” Why this ex-Nazi thinks he needs to reinterate it is beyond me. Perhaps he’s concerned Juan Guerre-Dinero hasn’t gotten the message.

  • P Matthews

McLean, Virginia — Nothing this person has ever done could or should be considered liberal …

  • Hassan i Sabbah

I suppose we can look forward to the Vatican apologizing for all the women it has killed by advocating the outlawing of abortion round about the year 2511? It took them 500 years to apologize for the Roman Inquisition.

  • Anonymous

Someday the Vatican will be a smoldering pile of rubble – that is, if you believe your Bible. But, the problem with the Pope, Church and the Vatican is, that, they think the Bible is talking about something else – and not them.
Rev. 17:3-6 “Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a desert. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns.
4 The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries.
5 This title was written on her forehead: MYSTERY BABYLON THE GREAT THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
6 I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus. When I saw her, I was greatly astonished”
Rev. 17: 16-17 “The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute. They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her flesh and burn her with fire.
17 For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to give the beast their power to rule, until God’s words are fulfilled”.

Now, I ask you, what type of weapon can eat flesh away and burn with fire? Perhaps, nuclear? So, you might get your wish – “Atilla10″.

  • Hassan i Sabbah

No, that’s the Tower of Conservababbel. They’re building it in Wisconsin.

  • Hassan i Sabbah

All that crucifixion and resurrection business has to do with initiation into a secret society. There are surviving elements of this in the Christian bible. But the real distortion involves the transportation of an earlier, even antediluvian, story into the world of the early Roman Empire. See my “Chapter Twelve: Tangled Bloodlines” here: http://neros.lordbalto.com/ChapterTwelve.htm

  • LEK56

    Oh gee thanks.
So now I suppose you’ll set your sights on the horde of pedophiles in your cult?
    No?
    Didn’t think so.

  • Hassan i Sabbah

Is it just me or did John XXIII do the same thing, as well as apologizing for the Inquisition, back in 1992?

  • Hassan i Sabbah

I thought I remembered that too. XXIIIrd I believe. I remember my mother saying, when she heard it, “Who’s he?” By which I think she meant, “Who’s he for exonerating US for something his organization had been using as an excuse for murder and mayhem for millennia?” Then again, maybe she just didn’t know who the funny guy in the robe was.

  • Anonymous

No matter what the Pope says or, how he dresses, he can’t conceal what is coming through his eyes. And, that is, murder, death, and lechery – what the Roman Catholic Church is most known for.

  • Hassan i Sabbah

You have to realize that the German Protestants invented biblical literary criticism. It took the Catholics a while to catch up, but there is now a strong contingent of Catholic biblical scholars who understand that the bible isn’t the infallible word of “God,” though they never bother to tell the sheep in their flocks.

  • Hassan i Sabbah

It generally takes them 500 years (e.g., the Inquisition), so you’ll only have to wait until somewhere around 2500.

  • Hassan i Sabbah

I wouldn’t take Revelations too seriously, since it has the sun turning black (solar eclipse) and the moon turning red (lunar eclipse) simultaneously. Not gonna happen. It’s all based on a prescientific worldview.
