Home run king Barry Bonds guilty of obstruction
SAN FRANCISCO — A jury convicted Barry Bonds of obstruction of justice Wednesday, but couldn’t reach a verdict on three perjury charges stemming from the home run king’s testimony in a steroid probe.
A mistrial was declared on the three perjury counts. The guilty verdict means the jury of eight women and four men believed Bonds’ 2003 testimony to a grand jury investigating doping in sports hindered the probe.
Bonds is one of the biggest names to be caught up in the BALCO steroid distribution scandal.
The former San Francisco Giants Slugger broke Hank Aaron’s revered record for career home runs with his 756th homer on August 7, 2007, going on to take his career tally to 762
He also owns baseball’s single-season records for home runs with 73 in 2001.
