Inmates at San Quentin rushed early Wednesday morning to save two boaters who had fallen overboard in the frigid San Francisco Bay waters.

One man and one woman fell into the water while trying to restart their boat, according to KTVU. The man later died but the woman was treated for exposure and released from the hospital.

The inmates responding to the incident were part of the prison fire department.
