Fox News host Glenn Beck suggested that some of the so-called “birthers” are actually supporters of President Barack Obama, after the White House released the president’s long-form birth certificate on Wednesday.
Many “birthers” believe there is persuasive evidence that Obama was actually born in Kenya in 1961 and that his birth certificate was faked in order to make him eligible for the Presidency. Others believe Obama is ineligible to be president because his father wasn’t a natural born citizen of the United States.
“Your dad can be born in Kenya,” Beck said on Premiere Radio Networks’ The Glenn Beck Program. “It’s where you were born. If his dad was trying to run for president that would be an issue… How many of these ‘birthers’ are actually working for the president — not for him, not like he’s paying them — but on the same side? [They] love this. Surely some. You gotta have some who are on these blog sites like ‘this is great’”
The “birther” conspiracy was first conceived during the 2008 campaign. Reality TV star Donald Trump recently brought the issue back into the media spotlight when he first revealed he had some doubts that Obama was a U.S. citizen during an interview with ABC News’ Ashleigh Banfield in March. Trump has been courting the media’s attention by questioning Obama’s eligibility for president ever since.
