WASHINGTON – Donald Trump’s popularity among Republican voters has taken a huge dive in the wake of President Barack Obama releasing his birth certificate, according to a new poll.

Just eight percent of GOP primary voters supported him in a Public Policy Polling survey released Tuesday, putting him in a tie for fifth place. Last month, he led the crowded field with 26 percent in the same poll.

Since then, Obama released his long-form birth certificate, which slashed the number of so-called “birthers” in half.

The figures reflect the single-issue nature of Trump’s dramatic surge, which now appears to have been followed by a similarly sharp drop after the issue was punctured.

The Public Policy Polling survey polled 610 usual Republican primary voters nationwide between May 5-8 and has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
