With all the stories of malicious hackers breaking through costly computer security, it’s nice to know there are still some dumb thieves out there.

Here, computer security worked as it was designed this week after a cab driver was arrested for stealing a man’s Macintosh computer. Using the security system, the computer’s owner was able to take photos of the thief driving his car and sleeping in his own home.

In spite of the evidence, police said that they didn’t have enough resources to pursue the case.

Using the photos and location tracking data from his computer, the man started a blog and went to the press, drawing in supporters and ultimately succeeding in attracting enough attention that police went and tracked the thief down.

This video is from ABC’s Good Morning America, broadcast Thursday, June 2, 2011.
