Embattled Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) confirmed that he had exchanged at least five private messages with a 17-year-old girl in Delaware this spring, The New York Times reported. Though copies of the messages were not provided, both a Weiner spokeswoman and an anonymous member of the girl’s family said that the messages were innocent and non-sexual in nature.
The girl reportedly became a fan of Weiner’s when her high school class visited Washington, D.C. and she saw him speak in his trademark passionate style. She began following him on Twitter in early April and tweeted about how much she enjoyed his speech. Two days later, he followed her back.
In the girl’s Twitter profile, the Times reported, she said she aspired to be president one day. In a private message shortly after he began following her, Weiner sent the girl a private message: “How hip am I talking to a future president.”
Though the girl was harassed by conservatives concerned that the congressman was communicating with both porn stars and high school girls, and unfollowed Weiner for a time, she eventually re-followed him. The two exchanged messages about baseball, and he jokingly asked her for advice on legislation.
In late May, before Weiner admitted that his account had not been hacked, conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart appeared on CNN and implied that Weiner had inappropriate talks with underage girls on Twitter.
“Girls that are quite young — younger than the girl in question here [the college student who received the damning lewd photo that started the scandal] — talk openly about Rep. Weiner, who he follows these girls,” Breitbart said.
The Delaware girl’s computer and phone have been taken to a police station for investigation, to make sure that none of the messages were offensive. The girl’s family member said that they expected no further action, but was not pleased ot have been sucked into the vortex of the congressman’s scandal.
“I am angry,” the family member said. “This is surreal and unbelievable. It is absolutely crazy. We are just regular people who go to baseball games and basketball games, as ordinary and plain as can be.”
