President Barack Obama said in an interview Monday that if he was in the wake of a scandal like Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York is now, he would resign.
“Well, obviously what he did was highly inappropriate,” he told NBC News. “I think he’s embarrassed himself, he’s acknowledged that, he’s embarrassed his wife and his family. Ultimately there’s going to be a decision for him and his constituents.
I can tell you that if it was me, I would resign.”
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats have called on Weiner to resign his congressional seat in light of his recent Twitter photo scandal.
“Congressman Weiner has the love of his family, the confidence of his constituents, and the recognition that he needs help,” Pelosi said in a statement. “I urge Congressman Weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a member of Congress.”
Weiner announced Saturday he was seeking professional treatment “to focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person.” He admitted last week that he tweeted a lewd photo to a college student and then falsely claimed his Twitter account had been hacked to cover up the incident.
