NEW YORK — Chrysler is recalling more than 11,000 of its 2011 model year vehicles because of a potential steering problem, the US government said Thursday.

Certain vehicles “may have been built with a missing or incorrectly installed steering column pivot rivet,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement on its website.

The defect could increase the potential for injury in a frontal crash, the NHTSA said.

The recall covers 11,351 vehicles: the Chrysler 200, Chrysler 200 Convertible, Chrysler Town and Country, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Caliber, Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Journey, Dodge Nitro, Jeep Compass, Jeep Liberty, Jeep Patriot and Jeep Wrangler.

The recalled vehicles were built between April and May. Chrysler notified the NHTSA of the recall on June 7.
