Deal to end war in Libya may be imminent

A deal to end the conflict between Libyan rebels and forces loyal to Muamar al Gaddafi may be very close at hand, according to Abdul Hafiz Ghoga, a high-ranking official with Libya’s National Transitional Council said today. The rebel leader told Al Jazeera that intermediaries indicate that Gaddafi is currently working on a deal to offer to the rebels as a peace agreement.

Ghoga says that Gaddafi is weary of the bloodshed brought about by the now four-month long conflict and realizes that he is running out of options. “We expect to get an offer very soon; he is unable to breathe.”

The National Transitional Council is not in direct talks with Gaddafi, but is communicating with the embattled leader through German and South African diplomatic officials, who have indicated that a deal is near. The NTC has stated that it intends to look seriously at any offer Gaddafi makes, but will not accept anything less than a total abdication of power by the dictator and members of his family.

Gaddafi extended an offer of a peace plan in April, but it was rejected by the rebel coalition.
