WASHINGTON — A US lawmaker strongly opposed to US military involvement in Afghanistan and the Libyan conflict is on a “fact-finding” visit to Syria and Lebanon, his office said Monday.

Democratic Representative Dennis Kucinich was expected to meet with Presidents Bashar al-Assad of Syria and Michel Sleiman of Lebanon during the visit, his office said in a statement.

“Peace is not just the absence of war,” Kucinich said in the statement.

“Peace is a conscious, active pursuit that requires work and communication. My work as a member of Congress requires that I learn firsthand about events in order to better understand policy alternatives for America and other nations.”

He also planned to meet with democracy activists and non-governmental organizations during the trip, which his office said came “at the request of many of his constituents.”
