Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich trumpeted theendorsement of an influential archconservative leader on Tuesday, but he also scored the backing of a pro-adultery website.
The site — www.ashleymadison.com, which dubs itself “the most recognized name in infidelity” — announced its support for the thrice-married former House speaker on a billboard.
A picture of the sign, which was installed in the key swing state of Pennsylvania, shows Gingrich with his finger over his mouth and declares him: “Faithful Republican…Unfaithful Husband.”
“This is clearly the opportunity for a politician to run for the highest office in the land when we all know about his ‘checkered past,’” the site’s founder, Noel Biderman, told AFP by telephone.
Biderman, whose business claims more than 12 million members, said Americans should be electing leaders based on their performance of their official duties, “not because of what they do, or don’t do, in their personal lives.”
Biderman wasn’t shy about seeking publicity, and said a Gingrich victory would “bode exceedingly well for where my business can end up.”
He also noted that American leaders in the past have struggled with their marital vows, citing among others Democratic president Bill Clinton.
The Gingrich campaign declined to comment on the unusual endorsement.
Earlier — and more importantly, for Gingrich’s political prospects — he won the backing of the founder of the archconservative American Family Association and American Family Radio.
“Newt Gingrich recognizes the threat to our country posed by judges and lawyers imposing values upon the country inconsistent with our religious heritage,” said Donald Wildmon.
