In the wake of the Iowa GOP caucus, Raw Story executive editor Megan Carpentier and Reason editor-in-chief Matt Welch sat down with The Real News Network’s senior editor Paul Jay to discuss Tuesday’s events and, in particular, the candidacy of Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX). Welch, a self-identified libertarian, and Carpentier had a heated debate about why progressives and even some libertarians hesitate to support the candidacy of Paul despite his positions on civil liberties and the war in Afghanistan and how former governor Gary Johnson (R-NM) is similar to Paul on many of the issues identified as important by the latter’s supporters with none of Paul’s racist baggage, but roundly ignored by Republicans, libertarians and progressives alike.
