More than a year after surviving a gunshot to her head, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) will step down from office to focus on her continued recovery.

In a video released from her Youtube page, Giffords expressed her gratitude for the all the support she has received.

“I have more work to do on my recovery,” she said. “So to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week.”

Despite stepping down, Giffords said that she would attempt a comeback to public office one day.

“I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country,” she said. “A lot has happened over the past year. We cannot change that. But I know on the issues we fought for, we can change things for the better.”

According to The Arizona Daily Star, Giffords will attend the State of the Union address Tuesday evening as one of her last acts in Congress.
