N.J. Dems blast Christie for threatening to veto same sex marriage bill

New Jersey Senate Democrats ripped Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday after he promised to veto a bill that would legalize same sex marriage.

Christie said a proposed constitutional amendment should be drafted and the issue should be put to a statewide vote.

“We do not put civil rights questions on the ballot,” New Jersey Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg exclaimed at a press conference.

“This is an issue of justice, an issue of justice for all, an issue of building values, of building family values, of giving children loving homes that are actually recognized throughout the state of New Jersey.”

During the press conference, Senate President Steve Sweeney slammed a reporter who asked “what the point is” of pushing for a bill that Christie had promised to veto.

“I’m fighting to get this done,” he said. “If we have to go for an override, we will work every angle we possibly have to, but right now it’s about getting it onto his desk. And its offensive for anyone to think ‘why bother if the governor doesn’t want to do it.’”

Polls show the majority of New Jerseyans support the right of same sex couples to wed, according to the Associated Press.
