A convicted pedophile whose partner is accused of murdering their two children in a hotel in Spain has been found dead in his cell, thePrison Service said Wednesday.

Martin Smith, 46, a former TV psychic from North Shields, was found dead on Monday evening at HMP Manchester, formerly Strangeways Prison.

A Prison Service spokesman said the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman was routinely investigating the death but it was not thought to be suspicious.

“Prisoner Martin Smith was found hanging by staff at HMP Manchester at approximately 6.30pm on Monday, January 23 2012,” a spokesman said.

“Staff intervened but he was pronounced dead at the prison at approximately 7pm.”

Smith was jailed for 16 years in March 2011 after being found guilty of a string of offences including rape, attempted rape and indecent assault.

His trial revealed how he used hypnotism and violence to groom and sexually abuse a young girl over more than a decade.

Smith’s daughter Rebecca, five, and son Daniel, 11 months, were found dead in a hotel in the resort of Lloret de Mar on the Costa Brava last May.

Their mother Lianne Smith, 43, faces two counts of murder. No date has been set for her trial.

The couple had gone to live in Spain in 2007 but Smith, who who had appeared as a guest psychic on Living TV’s Most Haunted, was extradited in spring 2010.
