Sex columnist and LGBT rights advocate Dan Savage said on Thursday that “gay bashing” was on its way out, at least politically.

“The gay bashing is really on its last legs, even in the Republican Party,” he said on Current TV’s Countdown.

“The old gay-bashy part of their base is dying. Young conservatives, young evangelicals — they support marriage equality by wide and growing majorities.”

Savage noted that some of the most ardent social conservatives in the Republican race — Michelle Bachmann, Herman Cain and Rick Perry — had all dropped out and Rick Santorum was doing poorly.
