A major South Korean retail group said Tuesday it has joined the bidding for the Los Angeles Dodgers after the troubled US baseball team went bankrupt last June.

E-Land recently submitted a bid document for the Major League club after forming a consortium with an unspecified party, an E-Land spokesman told AFP.

Peter O’Malley, a former owner of the team, has teamed up with E-Land, which plans to invest about $100 million in its bid, Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported, citing an industry source.

Among reported rival bidders for the historic club are retired NBA star Magic Johnson, Fox Sports and Mark Cuban, owner of NBA champions the Dallas Mavericks.

A January 23 deadline was set for initial offers, with current owner Frank McCourt having agreed to select a winning bid by April 1 so the sale can be completed by April 30.
