Man charged with child cruelty at Occupy DC
Police have charged a man at the Occupy DC encampment with cruelty to children after he left his toddler alone in a cold tent for at least 30 minutes.
Protesters camped at McPherson Square in Washington, DC wrapped the 13-month-old girl in a blanket and called police after they heard crying coming from a neighboring tent.
Paramedics who arrived on the scene determined the girl to be healthy and unharmed.
A half hour later a man returned to the park while police were investigating and said he was the baby’s father, according to Sgt. David Schlosser, a U.S. Park Police spokesman.
The man was charged with attempted second-degree cruelty to children.
The protesters said the negligent father involved in the ongoing demonstration, but had been hanging around McPherson Square for a few weeks.
“None of us knew this person,” said one protester. “It was a despicable, atrocious thing do. Every one here is revolted by the behavior.”
The girl is in the care of child protective services.
