Students at the University of Connecticut are meeting Wednesday night to discuss protesting the university’s student-run television station for airing a video which they say promotes “rape culture.”

The student-run, student-funded UCTV aired the Shenanigans comedy sketch on at least two occasions, Nov. 10 and Jan. 30, according to Gawker.

In the video, a woman who is running from a possible rapist uses a campus blue-light phone to contact UConn’s 911 system. Instead of getting help, she is met with a series of insults, including calling her a “stinky bitch,” a “holler monkey,” and a “cock gobbler.”

“You dumb blonde bitches don’t understand, always crying about being raped,” the voice says. “Suck it up.”

A second blue light phone tells the young woman, “I will fuck you so hard that you will wish you were raped by someone else.”

UConn spokesman Michael Kirk told the Connecticut Post that students should not contact university officials with complaints.

“UCTV, like the Daily Campus newspaper, is funded by students and run by students, and they produce the programs and decide what goes on the air,” Kirk explained. “It appears that the staff has already taken the video down in response to complaints from their fellow students, but anyone who feels a program is offensive should share their views directly with the station, as it appears many already have.”

After removing the video from their website Tuesday, UCTV apologized for “any frustration or harm this content has caused.”

“We are working towards a more careful screening process, as well as a review of our broadcast policies, that will prevent this situation from occurring again,” a statement on their website said. “Please keep in mind that the views expressed on any UCTV program do not reflect the opinions of UCTV, its board of directors, its members, or the University of Connecticut. In the future, please direct all inquiries to productions@uctv.uconn.edu.”

But that apology did not go far enough for the student activists who are meeting Wednesday night to discuss actions, “including a sit in, a protest and rally, and getting the word out that this is NOT okay.”

“We as UConn students pay mandatory fees for UCTV to be able to publish this crap,” an event notice on their Facebook page said. “If you don’t think violence against women is funny or sexy than please join us.”

The video below is not safe for work.
