The economy appears to be sputtering back to life, showing surprisingly good jobs numbers in January. On Friday, the Dow Jones closed at its highest point since May of 2008.
This leaves the Republican candidates — who have largely been building their platform on President Obama’s supposedly disastrous handling of the economy — in something of a pickle. No candidate is handling this newly ambiguous terrain with less grace, however, than the ever-awkward Mitt Romney, who deals with new, complex talking points with all of the skill and finesse of an elephant on ice skates.
On Friday’s The Rachel Maddow Show, Rachel pointed out that on some days, Mitt Romney says President Obama made the recession worse. On other days he can be badgered into admitting that things are actually getting better. He appears, she said, to be “flummoxed” by the facts on the ground. He knows on some level that the economy is improving, so why he sticking to his stump speech from early in the summer?
“Mr. Romney,” she said, “You do not always make sense.”
