Gov. Christie: Warren Buffett should just ‘shut up’

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said Tuesday that he was tired of hearing about billionaire investor Warren Buffett, who has lamented the fact that he paid a lower tax rate than his secretary.

“He should just write a check and shut up,” Christie said during an appearance on CNN. “I’m tired of hearing about it. If he wants to give the government more money, he’s got the ability to write a check — go ahead and write it.”

The so-called “Buffett rule,” which President Barack Obama called for in his latest State of the Union address, would require those earning more than $1 million per year to pay at least a 30 percent effective tax rate on their income.

Buffett, the world’s third richest man, has offered to match dollar-for-dollar Republican donations to pay down the federal deficit. He said he would match $49,000 in voluntary contributions made this year and last year by Republican Rep. Scott Rigell of Virginia.

He later offered to donate 15 percent of his annual income if just 10 percent of the Congress would do the same.
