Rachel Maddow was Jon Stewart’s guest on Thursday’s “The Daily Show,” there to discuss her new book, Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power.

According to Stewart, most TV personalities and talk show hosts who write books do so while making a conscious effort to do it as “cheaply, easily and superficially” as they can, accomplishing as little in the way of research as they can get away with. Maddow, he said, wrote instead a serious and thoughtful treatise on American military might in the 21st century.

“It’s making everybody look bad, is what I’m saying,” quipped Stewart, “I don’t think any of us appreciate that.”

What followed was a mostly-serious discussion of Maddow’s thesis on the rise of executive power and its effects on America’s willingness to go to war, from her book — which even Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes said was “worth reading.”
