Maddow: Santorum campaign like the comments on a birther blog

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow said Monday night that it was difficult to report on Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum because he does not appear to be running a serious campaign.

On Monday, Santorum falsely claimed that “seven or eight” of the University of California’s ten campuses did not offer any American history courses. Previously, he falsely claimed that elderly people in the Netherland were terrified of being involuntarily euthanized.

“The Rick Santorum campaign is essentially being run out of the blog comments on a birther website,” Maddow said. “It is very hard to treat him or his campaign as a major political force. It is hard to treat him as a major political figure that has a shot at the presidency.”

“But this is Mitt Romney’s competition,” she continued, noting that Romney was expected to win the Wisconsin, D.C. and Maryland primaries on Tuesday. “But even the pro-Mitt Romney late developments in Wisconsin ahead of that primary tomorrow reflect the main dynamic in the Republican race this year, which is not about the strength of Mitt Romney as a frontrunner. It is about the weakness of his rivals.”
