Pentagon approves of charges against Gitmo prisoners for 9/11

The Department of Defense approved of charges Wednesday against Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other Guantanamo Bay prisoners for their involvement in the September 11 attacks.

In a statement released by the department, Mohammed has been charged along with Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin Attash, Ramzi Binalshibh, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi.

All five members are charged with terrorism, hijacking aircraft, conspiracy, murder in violation of the law of war, attacking civilians, attacking civilian objects, intentionally causing serious bodily injury, and destruction of property in violation of the law of war. Each person will be sentenced to death if convicted of the charges.

Mohammed, who confessed to masterminding the 9/11 attacks in 2007, has been imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay since 2003 after he was captured in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Attash, a former bodyguard for Osama bin Laden, also was captured in 2003 in Karachi, Pakistan and faces charges for selecting and training the 9/11 hijackers.

Al-Shibh has been in U.S. custody since September 2002 after he was captured in Karachi too. Ali, whose real name is Ammar al-Baluchi, was arrested with Attash in 2003 and is the nephew of Mohammed.

Al-Hawsawi, who researched the flight schools for the 9/11 hijackers, has been in U.S. custody since 2003 and was transferred to Guantanamo Bay in 2006.
