North Carolina representative Virginia Foxx (R-Wingnut) is a grumpy old lady who wants you college whippersnappers to get offa her lawn:

FOXX: I went through school, I worked my way through, it took me seven years, I never borrowed a dime of money. He borrowed a little bit because we both were totally on our own when we went to college, totally. [...] I have very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt because there’s no reason for that. We live in an opportunity society and people are forgetting that. I remind folks all the time that the Declaration of Independence says “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” You don’t have it dumped in your lap.

Obviously, ol’ Ginny Foxx is completely unaware of how expensive college is these days, and doesn’t care that her party’s efforts to cut Pell grants make it even harder for students to get an affordable college education. Then again, such disdain for college students is de rigueur for the GOP, as evidenced by the following interview with the GOP’s golden boy, Paul Ryan:

LOWE: I come from a very middle-class family and under President Obama, I get $5,500 per year to pay for school, which doesn’t come close to covering all of the funding, but it helps ease the burden. Under your plan, you cut it by 15 percent. I was just curious why you would cut a grant that goes directly to the middle- and lower-class people that need it the most.

RYAN: ‘Cause Pell Grants have become unsustainable. It’s all borrowed money…Look, I worked three jobs to pay off my student loans after college. I didn’t get grants, I got loans, and we need to have a system of viable student loans to be able to do this.

The second concern I have is, in the health care bill — people don’t know this — for budgetary gimmickry reasons, the administration and Congress at the time, took over the student loan industry. So they had the federal government, the Department of Education, basically confiscate the private student loan industry.

So there’s that.

Also, when Virginia Foxx went to college at the turn of the century, all a lady of her station had to do was pay two buffalo nickels, and she could take all the typing classes she wanted.
