On his show Monday night, Daily Show host Jon Stewart lampooned the firestorm that erupted after CNN contributor Hilary Rosen said that Ann Romney, a mother of five, had “actually never worked a day in her life.

He noted that Democrats had been blind-sided by the reaction, which allowed Republicans to counter the claim that conservatives were waging a “war on women.” Stewart said that previously the media had been too focused on the Republican primary race to notice Democrats gaffes.

“No matter what Democrats did or said, nobody gave a shit, because any time they said it, the media would get distracted by Newt Gingrich’s marriage with a moon-wife,” Stewart said.

“But last week, Rick Santorum concede,” he noted. “Primaries over, general election on. All the firepower the right was wasting on each-other has now been retrained on their actual opponents. It’s like the Democrats didn’t realize they had gone from England to America, where the traffic is now coming from the other direction.”

Stewart joked the Republicans got so “over-excited” by the incident that they became pro-choice, a reference to Ann Romney’s remark that everyone “should respect the choices that women make.”

“Mitt Romney can now campaign on motherhood being hard,” he said. But Stewart mockingly pointed out that, only months ago, Romney implied that stay-at-home moms had no dignity.
