The Catholic League, a religious advocacy group, has threatened to launch a boycott against the sponsors of Daily Show host Jon Stewart over a segment that featured “vagina mangers.”

“We are asking Stewart to apologize,” Catholic League president Bill Donohue said in a statement. “If he does not, we will mobilize Protestants, Jews, Mormons and Muslims to join us in a boycott of his sponsors.”

“Moreover, we will not stop with a boycott; there are other things that can be done to register our outrage,” he added. “We are prepared to spend the money it takes to make this a nationwide issue, and we are prepared to stay the course.”

In the segment, which aired on April 16, Stewart mocked Fox News for criticizing the phrase “war on women.” He noted that the 24 hour news network had been promoting the phrase “war on Christmas” for years.

“What can women do to generate the same sense of outrage from Fox as” the alleged war on Christmas, Stewart asked. “Perhaps they could play into the theme. Maybe women could protect their reproductive organs from unwanted medical intrusions with vagina mangers.”

When Stewart finished, a picture of a nude women with a nativity scene ornament between her leg appeared beside him.

Donohue described it as an “unprecedented vulgar assault on Christians.”
