Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Thursday said he was “not going to apologize” for his family’s enormous wealth after President Barack Obama made the suggestion that the candidate was “born with a silver spoon” in his mouth.

“The president is really taking aim at anybody he can find these days,” Romney told Fox News host Steve Doocy. “In my case, I’m certainly not going to apologize for my dad and his success in life. He was born poor. He worked his was to become very successful despite the fact that he didn’t have a college degree. And one of the things he wanted to do is provide for me and for my brother and sisters. I’m not going to apologize for my dad’s success.”

“But I know the president likes to attack fellow Americans,” the former Massachusetts governor added. “He’s always looking for a scapegoat, particularly those who have been successful like my dad. And I’m not going to rise to that.”

“If I am president, I will stop the attack on fellow Americans. I will stop the attack on people and start attacking problems that have been looming over this country.”

Ironically, the president was talking about policies that could have helped Romney’s father, George Romney, get a college education during his remarks in Ohio Wednesday.

“Somebody gave me an education,” Obama said. “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. Michelle wasn’t.”

“Investing in a community college is just like investing in a new road or new highway or broadband Internet,” the president explained. “These are not grand schemes to redistribute wealth. They’ve been made by Democrats and Republicans for generations because they benefit all of us. That’s what leads to strong, durable economic growth.”
