Sarah Steelman, the Republican Senate candidate running against Missouri’s Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill this election, is facing heavy criticism for her son applauding a tea party activist urging a crowd “to kill” the senator, according to reporting Tuesday by Think Progress. Now, the video (embeded below) has surfaced.
At a campaign event last week hosted by the Tea Party Express, tea party activist Scott Boston uttered the harsh language as Steelman and her son, Deputy Campaign Manager Sam Steelman, stood nearby.
“We have to get Claire McCaskill out,” Boston said. “We have to kill the Claire bear, ladies and gentlemen. Can someone offer up some sort of care bear or something? Really an evil monster.”
Sam Steelman applauded Boston’s comments while his mother smiled and talked to a few supporters. The Republican candidate issued a tepid condemnation of the right-wing activist’s remarks.
“I may disagree with the words Mr. Boston chose in his statement,” she told The Kansas City Star Tuesday. “But I understand his frustration and I emphatically support his right to express his views.”
