Stephen Colbert wants to know: Did your straight marriage start to feel a little weak Wednesday afternoon? If so, it was because President Barack Obama publicly endorsed same sex marriage in an interview in the Oval Office, a room previously reserved, Colbert noted, for “hummers from interns.”

Yes, he said, on Wednesday afternoon, the president pushed “the Rainbow Button and launched ‘Gay-mageddon.’” The camera cut away to a clip from the ABC interview, then back to a flower-bedecked “Colbert Report” set, where Stephen was about to slip a ring on to the finger of a perfectly nice young man in a violet ascot, then abruptly came to his senses again.

One state, said the outspoken host, has had the nerve to stand up for traditional marriage, North Carolina, which passed the controversial Amendment One to the state’s constitution, which outlaws any forms of marriage or civil union other than heterosexual marriage between a man and a woman.

In other words, said Colbert, “Suck it, gays. By which I mean, ‘Do not.’”
