The wreckage of a Russian Sukhoi jet that went missing in Indonesia with about 50 people on board was located on Thursday, a day after it disappeared, the rescue agency chief said.
“The Sukhoi has been found just now,” said Ketut Parwa, search and rescue agency chief for the capital Jakarta, who was coordinating operations.
“There is debris spotted by the helicopter, confirmed it is from the Sukhoi,” he said.
Another official said the military helicopter had spotted fragments from the plane.
“From the air, the pilot spotted fragments of the plane and he spotted the Sukhoi logo,” nationalsearch and rescue chief Daryatmo told a press conference.
“We spotted the fragments at the coordinates where we lost contact with the plane,” he said.
Ali Umri Lubis, spokesman for a military airbase, said the plane was spotted in the Cijeruk area, near Mount Salak, close to the city of Bogor in West Java.
The plane vanished from radar screens south of the capital Jakarta 50 minutes into what was meant to be a brief flight on Wednesday and initial efforts to locate the jet had proved fruitless.
Helicopters and a team of 40 rescuers intensified search efforts Thursday, which were hampered by bad weather the previous evening.
