Thursday afternoon, violent storms swept over Gansu province in Northwestern China, killing at least 37 people with 19 others missing. Hail and torrential rains downed power lines, flattened buildings and razed crops.

Nearly 30,000 residents have been evacuated. China’s national flood control and drought relief headquarters issued fresh warnings to Gansu and all of China to step up weather monitoring and flood control efforts.
