Weeks ago, openly gay 17-year-old Darnell “Dynasty” Young was expelled from Indiana’s Arsenal Technical High School for sparking a stun gun this mother had given him for self defense on school grounds. Last weekend, Young was attacked outside of school — this time, by a 34-year-old stranger, according to the Indianapolis Star.
The suspect, Khyran R. Delay, said that he recognized the youth from local TV news coverage and approached him on Friday night to talk in the food court of the local mall. The older man claims that Young became agitated and that he shoved Young in attempt to extricate himself from a rapidly escalating confrontation.
Young and witness Donald Richardson, a janitor at the mall, tell a different story. hey say that when Young walked past Delay’s table in the food court, the older man became threatening toward the boy and began to spew homophobic epithets. Delay allegedly pushed Young and punched him in the face.
Richardson, who was close to the scene of the fight, radioed for mall security. Delay then turned his attention to the janitor and approached him making threats, apparently angry that the mall employee had called for help.
When mall security arrived on the scene, they observed that Young was showing redness in his eye and face consistent with having been struck. Delay was handed over to police, who arrested him on misdemeanor battery charges. He is currently being held in the Marion County jail and is scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday morning.
