Viewpoint host Eliot Spitzer on Thursday interviewed Current TV’s Christof Putzel about Omar Hammami, an American-born member of the Somali terrorist group Al Shabaab.

Two years ago, Putzel created a documentary about Hammami. In April, it was reported that Hammami had been executed by a rival terrorist. But Hammami later confirmed he was still alive, making contact with Current TV about three weeks ago.

Putzel recently spoke with the American Jihadist’s parents, Shafik and Debra Hammami, at their home in Alabama.

“To me, every single day, first thing when I get up in the morning, I scour the Internet and that is how I start my day,” Shafik said, beginning to cry. “As long as I know that he’s alive, that is enough for me.”

“In his mind, he is fulfilling God’s guidance,” Shafik later added, “and no one can convince him otherwise.”

Hammami joined Al Shabaab five years ago.

“You can never underestimate the power of faith,” Putzel said. “Faith is an incredibly strong driver. When Omar converted to Islam, he found his path.”
