Republicans nationwide are attempting to defund Planned Parenthood. In 2011, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kansas, North Carolina, Texas and Tennessee passed bills to defund the women’s healthcare and family-planning services provider. And in 2012, Arizona successfully stripped funding from the organization.
Yesterday, Pennsylvania threw its hat into the ring with HB 2405. The bill alone is unsurprising — they are becoming routine in state legislatures. The claims made by Representative Daryl Metcalfe (the sponsor of the bill), however, are outlandish and flat-out false:
“Across the United States, Planned Parenthood performs an abortion every 95 seconds on 91 percent of all the pregnant mothers that walk through their doors,” Metcalfe said. “For every one adoption referral made by America’s largest abortion-on-demand provider, 391 babies are aborted. Each year, Planned Parenthood aborts more than 320,000 innocent lives and over 16,000 of those abortions occur in Pennsylvania.”
“Regardless of their position on abortion, Pennsylvania taxpayers must no longer be forced to subsidize the loss of innocent lives,” said Metcalfe. “In reality, women in Pennsylvania will be healthier and the children safer when we permanently defund Planned Parenthood and its anti-family agenda. I encourage every taxpaying Pennsylvanian to contact his or her respective state lawmakers and demand an end to all state funding for Planned Parenthood through final passage of the Whole Woman’s Health Funding Priorities Act.”
The notion that Planned Parenthood performs an abortion every 95 seconds on 91 percent of all pregnant patients is as mind-boggling a claim as I’ve ever heard. It is on par with Senator Kyl’s claim last year that 90% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortion, a claim that he was forced to say was “not intended to be a factual statement” when confronted with the reality that only 3% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortion.
Republicans and the anti-choice crowd have been demonizing Planned Parenthood for so long that they are beginning to believe their own lies. And, in so doing, they are resigning millions of low-income and minority women to a life without critical healthcare services. Moreover, they are stripping women of the right to plan when and whether they want to have children, both by limiting access to contraception and by chipping away at abortion rights.
You want to talk anti-family agenda? Look no further than the Republican party.
As for Representative Metcalfe? He is a known wackadoodle:
According to Philly Now and Keystone Politics, this legislation is unlikely to go anywhere this year. Seems to me, that’s something folks should be thinking about as election day approaches. Vote these fuckers out.
