6-year-old girl set to become youngest spelling bee contestant ever
The annual Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee is set to have one of its precocious contestants standout from the others, as a six-year-old Virginia girl will become the youngest participant in the competition’s history.
In a story released Monday from WJLA-TV, Lori Anne Madison is prepared to participate in the prestigious competition, which begins Tuesday morning. Scripps-Howard does not have a minimum age requirement for the competition, as children up to 15 years of age are eligible. However, no one younger than 8 has ever qualified for the national finals.
Madison, who won the Prince William County Spelling Bee in March to qualify, is one of 14 children from Virginia participating in the competition.
