Tom Barrett: I don’t want Wisconsin to be right-wing experiment

Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett, who is challenging Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker in Tuesday’s recall election, said he does not feel ignored by President Barack Obama.

“This started as a citizens movement,” the Democratic candidate explained Tuesday on CNN. “There were literally close to a million people who signed their name to a petition to have this election. This is the largest grassroots movement that this state has ever seen. It started out as a grassroots movement and it will end as a grassroots movement, as it should.”

As a swing state, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus has argued that the results of Wisconsin’s recall would have an impact on the national elections in November. Republicans have said Walker’s victory would validate their small-government agenda. The Democratic National Committee, in contrast, was slow to invest in the recall election against Walker.

“There are some that want to make it a national election,” Barrett said. “That is part of my gripe about this. I don’t want Wisconsin to be the experimental dish for the right-wing. I want Wisconsin to return to Wisconsin values. There are some, particularly on the other side, who do want to nationalize this.”
