Thursday night on “The Colbert Report,” host Stephen Colbert discussed the polarization of our society and suggested something that we may all be able to put aside our differences and come together over, a tiny teacup piglet named Hamlet.

According to a recent Pew Research poll, during the Bush and Obama years Americans have become more ideologically divided than at any point in the last 25 years. Colbert believes he may have a solution, a viral video that has emerged of “Hamlet,” a teacup piglet, gingerly trying to find his way down a short flight of stairs to a bowl of oatmeal.

What could be cuter and less offensive than an adorable piglet eating a nourishing breakfast, right? However, even here the clouds of partisanship may blot the horizon.

The video appeared to be nothing more than, as Colbert said, “an adorable pink pig triumphing over long odds.” Then it occurred to the conservative pundit that Hamlet is pink, and pink is a man’s name, which would make Hamlet either a metrosexual piglet who’s very comfortable with his sexuality…or just gay.
